Well, well, well.... the clip is not in the film.... I wondered about that. It's funny, it was about an outdoor BBQ where Laura and Peter Lucas' character split up, and he runs away with a European circus. I am very surprised that sequence is not in the movie. But, David's funny like that, he may have felt that the inclusion on the DVD 'putrified' it as he likes to say. He likes to keep things pure. Who DID do most of the music? Is a song called , "Idiots Appear" in the film? Is Chrysta Bell singing in a nightclub?
I am not surprised about Bill Macy being in it. He is a neighbor of David's.

I'll bet it'll be on the Director's Cut! You know, the "extended" version.

yeah, I hope that too!!
Regarding the picture below, there is a funny story about it. This is when pictures were taken by the press after the ceremony. An evening show that airs on our third national TV network showed when David was moving the lion in front of all the cameras , up and down and in circles, as if it was a magic torch, but evidently just to make the report easier for the photographers! The scene was funny and just hilarious. I was actually on the floor!!!

Im so glad to hear Chandra got to meet David!! I tried my best too but was shooed in to the theatre...you cant have it all!! However, I was very close and that was enough for me at this time! John- I tried very hard to see what music was used when the credits were rolling, because its something for me which is incredibly important in his films. What i managed to catch was a lot of Penderecki...an original song by David and then some other songs which I didnt recognise and didnt catch credits for. One was a woman singing..the most beautiful song...similar to the way Julee Cruise sings. This could have been Chrysta Bell?? However, there was no seen with her singing in a nightclub! There were also a couple of fairly hard-rock songs...in the vain of Lost Highway. I really liked them but didnt catch the credits! And finally..to close the film (again...LOOK AWAY NOW if you dont want a little spoiler!) was a Nina Simone song!! The entire song! As far as Angelo goes...there was some of his music in there. Mainly it was his score for Rabbits but I think some of it was extended over other scenes aswell. As far as the Room to Dream clip goes...yes the BBQ and the scenes around that are in it but not this one for some reason.. Ok, im going to try and give you a brief account of what I remember... The theatre wasnt too big. It was divided into two, the stalls and an upper floor. I was sat down in the stalls, second row back. The ceremony began with David being introduced in Italian as....(as far as I could gather) one of the most original directors ever. The lights then dimmed and we saw a 5 minute montage of Lynch's work, played to an incredible song, which again I dont recognise! Immediately afterwards, Laura Dern walks on stage in a stunning long maroon dress and gives a brief speech about how she has grown up working for David and how she has had amazing experiences which have helped her deal not only with acting but with her day to day life. She then introduced David and as he walked on, he got a rolling round of applause and a standing ovation. Marco Muller handed him the Golden Lion and I heard David quietly say "Oh My God" as he recieved it! The round of applause and cheering went on and on and David kept saying "Thankyou so much" into the microphone. When the round of applause eventually died down (it was a long one!!), David gave a small speech thanking the board for voting and saying it was a great honour. He then got a small piece of paper out and read a short bit in Italian! The audience clapped again and David, Laura and Marco Muller all walked off the stage, down the middle and to the upper level where all the actors were sitting. Before the film started a woman introduced the produces and actors one by one. They all stood up on their turn whilst the audience clapped. From what I could see Jeremy Alter was there, Krister Kerr (i think), Mikhaila Aaseng, Masuimi Max and Krysztof Majchrzak (i think). Justing Theroux, Jeremy Irons and Laura Dern were all in the front row next to David. Laura, Jeremy and David got the biggest cheers. My favourite moment of the whole night was when the audience finished cheering as IE was introduced and David shouted out..."Let's Go!!" And so the 3 hours began... It was absolutely unrelenting darkness and confusion. You know when Camilla opens the blue box and everything goes crazy? The box was never shut in this film!! It felt as if David had finally made the film he wanted to...the film where he could have enough freedom to indulge his ideas completely and utterly without constraints. Time and identity are blurred and instead of two paralel worlds (like Mulholland Drive), there are perhaps 6..or 7...and you dont know whats paralel to what or indeed if anything is paralel to anything else. You do not know where to begin making sense of the film. Although, I personally found it darker than anything David has done it also had elements which were far lighter and more humorous than a lot he's done! That seems like a complete contradiction, because the darkness is unrelenting...but this film is one mass of swirling contradictions. It felt like David had absolutely NO qualms about doing exactly what he wanted with IE and didnt care one bit what large companies, the press or some of the public thought. At the end of the film around half the thatre left, right at the beginning of the credits. These were old Venetian families and people with no interest in Lynch and his work. Only the hardcore fans remained and you could see David didnt give a monkey's that half the theatre obviously didnt get it and had left. He too stayed until the end, with Laura and Justin and the other actors and was quite happy to cheer along with his proper fans at the end! As far as DV goes..there is nothing to worry about. It fits perfectly into the film and is another two fingers up at convention. I dont know what else to say about the film because I dont want to give you any details. I dont think thats fair on David or on you lot. The experience of seeing a Lynch film for the first time should be just that...you shouldnt know things before you see it. I will just say that you will be in for one hell of a ride...and let it take you where it goes...follow the journey. I hope that its not forced into editing before you see it. Also, there are a few cameos in the film to look out for...and some old regulars, which imdb does not have listed. Grace Zabriskie for instance!!! Wow..she;s brilliant in it...

That hollywoodreporter review really cracks me up...They blatantly want your run of the mill mystery-thriller hollywood film...the type of thing we've seen a thousand times. They cant take it when something different and difficult to grasp comes along. They dont like things that are unclear and impossible to pin down..they dont like art. They want every film the same. Also interesting how they mentioned Angelo's score....Now im confused...Im pretty sure i didnt see his name on the credits at all! Unless i was too busy looking around and David and the actors. I distinctly remember Penderecki's name on most things and i did not recognise a substantial Badalamenti score. There was definetely some of his music in there but i got the impression it was mainly things re-used from Rabbits. I could however, be wrong.

(As you said, probably the rabbits score)

Yes, thats exactly what it sounds like...there is David's ambience stuff and also Angelo's string/ambience stuff...no actual piece of music as such. If you know what i mean. Its seems similar to the Lost Highway Sounstrack..in that there will be a big mixture of artists. The music was beautiful though.

The Rabbits theme was done by David and myself, back when we posted it for the web, unless he has replaced it. David played a keyboard and I played a harmonic line with him.

I think Penderecki fits perfectly in Lynch's work. I have heard there's also a Beck song in the movie (!). Maybe "Hollywood freaks"? I love that song although I hardly imagine it in a DL movie... Mr. Silencio, while I was reading IE reviews from Venice, I was thinking of Fellini too. Specially his latest films as "La cittè delle donne", "E la nave va", "Intervista"...films where everything was possible, like if they were a box of ideas, dreams, images... These films not only were brilliant, they were also a demonstration of Fellini's freedom and sense of art. And in these films Fellini went far than ever from conventional cinema and he did exactly what he wanted to do. I've heard that critics hated most of his works then, but those films remain like true pieces of art. I think of "IE" in similar terms. Maybe is his "8 1/2" :) P.D.: Iar, I love your posts!

I brought the example of 8 1/2 because it is, above all, one of Fellini's masterpieces (along with "I Vitelloni" "Lo Sceicco Bianco - The White Sheik" "La Strada - The Road" "Il Bidone - The Swindle" "La Dolce Vita" and "Satyricon") and a cinematographic emblem because it dealt - for the first time in the history of cinema - with the theme of the meta-cinema (that is, movie within the movie; life and troubles of a director who has to make a film, choose an actress, and gets confused with a lot of levels of narrative and visual power, mixing imagination and reality and memories etc.) Moreover, "8 1/2" opens with a dream sequence that is just wonderful and has become a pearl in the world of cinema. There are other pieces during the film that space out the Reality segments with other "visual ramblings", that mix the director's youth and parental memories. That's why it's easy to compare this movie to what seems to be this INLAND EMPIRE, but also MULHOLLAND DR. The most remarkable attempt to deal with the same kind of genre, but with different tones, was La nuite americaine by french director François Truffaut.

I understood what you meant :) The "8 & 1/2" opening sequence, the one of the traffic jam, is one of my favourite scenes of all time. I like the films you mentioned, but I prefer Fellini from "8 & 1/2" to his last films, specially "Roma", "Amarcord", "Il Casanova" and "E la nave va". l And, being frivolous, I've heard Lynch has an affair with Emily Stofle, the girl from "Room to dream" clip, is it true? Now that Suri Cruise is real, we need more rumours.

Really? I think maybe this is one good reason to get divorce... Emily Stofle was the girl on the left. The one of the right was Kristen Kerr.

Josh Eisenstadt told me that the brunette actress in the clip said it very much was from IE, but that it may not have made final cut.
EDIT: I love the Rabbits theme. I still remember the chills I got hearing it for the first time. Iar, it is so cute that DL yelled "Let's go!" That's how I feel, too :) Mr. Silencio, that last face looks like one of David's "I'm-really-trying-to give-language-to this-idea" expressions.

What I should have said was, wouldn't be used in IE. DL doesn't even like chapter stops so it seemed unlikely he would allow people to see anything from the film so spectacularly out of context. Reading interviews with people who've worked with DL, nobody seems to know what's going to come out of the editing room. Aplogies if this post makes no sense. I think my attention span is becoming a bit strained!

Is there any nudity and sex in this film? (I ask because I have always wanted to take my parents to see a DL film, but my mom is really old fashioned, and objects to nudity and sex. I assume it has its fair share, much like LH, FWWM, and MD, but I thought I would still ask)

John- You know, i think it may be David's own music over Rabbits then because its no different to orginal Rabbits music. I think im getting confused between yours and David's ambience music and Angelo's....Im just sure that there must be some Angelo stuff in there somewhere...it really has the feel of some of his music in places. All i know is that i did not see his name on the credits...this is troubling me now..i wish i could see it again! I really tried to pay as much attention as i could but i was so swept away in the whole experience that i preferred not to analyse different parts if you know what i mean? All i know for sure is that it was generally not a Badalamenti score! Room to Dream Clip: Basically i think it was left out in the editing stage. There are scenes around that one in the film..ie...same characters and costumes and setting. I think it was just a discarded scene which was given to the company.
