Hey Dugpa, don't go into it too much but is there anything in Inland as iconic as say the Black Lodge ?

Nothing as iconic as the Black Lodge or the convenience store. Well, maybe one, but I won't talk about it so I don't spoil it. There were a few great scenes though. While IE was a great film, I still like his older films much better. I'l have to see it a few more times before I can properly rank it.

I'm looking forward to the film very much, too.

These questions may have been asked already (although probably not) but here goes anyway -

I often hope any forthcoming films by DL have aspects or echoes of Twin Peaks about them. Are there any of these in INLAND EMPIRE please? However, whilst some have argued that Mulholland Dr. had a TP feel about it, the setting of Hollywood was too distinctive and cold-feeling for me to achieve that. When TP was at its best, or achieving a good atmosphere most, it had a warm feeling to it, perhaps stemming from the evocation of location and the isolated setting amongst other things. I think the cast and the food and coffee mentions evoked this feeling too.

Also, for instance, are there any detectives in INLAND EMPIRE or anything TP-esque? Does the film have a warm or a cold feeling or does it have a bit of both? I know I am simplifying, but its a complex thing to discuss properly, the atmosphere and suchlike...

Other than the red drapes, no real nods to Twin Peaks. MD had a few more nods with the Electricity and such. No Detectives as well. The feeling is cold compared to Twin Peaks. The characters are interesting but not as likeable as most of the Twin Peaks characters. Even though the movie is over three hours, you never really get to know any of the characters that well. You'll have to see it to understand what I'm talking about.

Id describe it as being very very cold!! Hasnt got the feeling of Twin Peaks at all to be honest...other than the fact that it echoes the surrealism that TP had at times. Id most closely compare it to MD and perhaps Eraserhead. MD did have certain similarities to TP but these similarities are not what it holds in common with IE..if that makes any sense??

I think IE is more obviously dark than TP. TP, the first half of MD and Blue Velvet have that "darkness disguised under warmth and sunny skies" going on. IE never really has this...its stripped down to the core darkness and 'evil' almost from the very beginning. This is why I found it so "relentlessy dark".

I tried it but nothing so far. I'm hoping that our local art house will put on a special shindig when IE comes out. I just saw BLUE VELVET tonight and converted another film fan to DL! Good on me! Plus, I won a six pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon during a trivia contest. Peachy keen!

If this can interest you, here is an excerpt from David Lynch/Laura Dern/Justin Theroux interview at the New York film festival. Check it out:

I have a question about the INLAND EMPIRE poster. Is the image that appears on inlandempirecinema.com slightly changed from the original  Axxon N image?? Does anybody know what Im talking about? I cant find the Axxon image now..it may still be on DavidLynch.com somewhere but Im not sure. It looks very similar but Im pretty positive the image was never Laura Dern, which it now clearly is. Or maybe it has always been Laura and it was just less clear (I seem to recall the image being closer to the face so that you cant see as many of the features).

Oh and has anybody heard from or seen Chandra recently?

I just want to say that Axxon X is in INLAND EMPIRE. When Laura is coming to the factory... It's written on the wall.

The AXXON N. picure was from the Nudes and Smoke series. The INLAND EMPIRE poster has always been Laura Dern.

In response to the 'coldness' of Twin Peaks or Inland Empire -

Wouldn't you say Lynch's episodes of TP tended towards coldness anyway? Think of the second season pilot and the final ep...

However, there was a certain other thing going on and they weren't as cold as say Kubrick's films, in my view.

Rhino Entertainment is going to the Inland Empire.

In a story from Home Media Retailing, the company, known for releasing eclectic titles, is partnering with David Lynch to bring his new film out on DVD. The film follows a woman who gets mixed up in a mystery landing her in trouble in the Inland Empire near Los Angeles.

The film "was shot entirely on a Sony DSR-PD150 digital camera."

The movie is coming out theatrically in December from 518 Media. Lynch is very excited about the prospects of what he will do with the DVD.

"The DVD will be really cool," he states. "It will have so much great stuff on there. I am going to load it up and make it exactly the way I want it."

According to Rhino VP Sig Sigworth, the Inland Empire DVD should be out sometime in the summer of 2007.
