This is pretty funny. It's about a review by Manohla Dargis of the NYT (formerly of the great LA Weekly free paper).

The Most Pretentious Piece of Writing in All of Recorded History
[John Podhoretz]

You know, at times, people come up to me randomly on the streets of New York and ask me, "Say, JPod, how exactly would you define the word 'pretentious'?" And I have to admit I am usually stumped and unable to sum up exactly the qualities of pseudo-thought that the word represents. That is why I am grateful today for the film critic of the New York Times, Ms. Manohla Dargis. A writer of uncommon self-important idiocy, Dargis has just published what is, I believe, the single most pretentious review, ever written, in any publication, anywhere, of anything. If you are brave, you will emerge from her description of David Lynch's Inland Empire a sadder but wiser person. You will have looked the horror of pretentiousness in the face and you will have survived. Take a deep breath. And begin. Here.

I don't know what this says about me but I really liked Dargis' review. Pretty much how I felt about the film.

I printed out the article but still haven't read it.  I used to love Dargis with the LA Weekly because he/she (?) always had a fresh and original take on the films he/she reviewed and because I knew no film studios were greasing the wheels of the LA Weekly critics.  They went to films pretty much on their own dime and were freely voicing their opinions without undue outside influence.  Then he/she made the big time with the NY Times.

Uh... wow.  If people this pretentious recommend DL, no wonder he has a reputation as a pretentious director.  The forced alliteration, the name drops, the painfully obvious in jokes... reading it (for me) had a kind of morbid fascination. I had to keep reading to see what incredibly lame and pretentious thing he/she would write next. It's like a really bad imitation of Pauline Kael... ok that's my review of the review... I just had to get that out.

EDIT: Wow even the ratings reasons listed are pretentious... "ubiquitous menace" gimme a break.

That god damn trailer's more popular than Uncle's Day in a whorehouse!

Thanks for that article from the New York Times, Susan.  First really good review I've read.

So, when are you going to go see it?  I don't have any options!

i always wonder about people who say stuff like this is pretentious. would you rather read some half-assed, stupid hollywood reporter review, or one by someone who obviously approached the art of film reviewing AS art. I agreed with almost everything she said about the movie.

Or just call me pretentious...

At least the Finnish date is false. It was first supposed to be 29th of December but got delayed indefinitely. No premiere schedules for 2007 have been released yet. I sure hope they don't make me wait for, like, six months.

12 of April until the its released in the UK

This means for another 5 months I have to continue reading people's reviews using my hand to cover my eyes, peeking through my fingers trying not to find out too much about it. Thought the great thing about Lynch films is that you could be told a great deal about the plotline and still be lost for words.

One of the most intelligent open-minded written reviews so far thats not writtenby an obviously biased fan.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but is it possible to know from Mr. Neff which is the title to the song in the INLAND EMPIRE trailer?  and, possibly, when it will be released or available on the net?

Hi, Mr. Silencio, and all; I left David's employ before this film was posted. I have not seen it completed, and do not know the title song. We were originally going to have three Chrysta Bell songs in the movie, and some scenes were filmed with her, but we did not reach contractual agreement and they were dropped. I guess a song I performed on is in the film ("Polish Poem"), but I still have not received any contracts or payments, so I do not know what ended up in Inland Empire.

INLAND EMPIRE was the second highest per screen gross in Boston this weekend
beating out THE HOLIDAY, APOCALYPTO, and THE HISTORY BOYS which also opened this week.

That's a little like calling John Paciorek the greatest player in the history of Major League Baseball.  Paciorek played one late season game with the Houston Colt .45s in 1963 and singled in all three at bats.  He was injured shortly thereafter, retiring from MLB with one game played and a 1.000 career batting average.

INLAND EMPIRE played on one screen in Boston this weekend.
