Lynch fans who don't like his films? How very post-modern.

I ran from the noise and the silence, from the traffic on the streets

It does seem to be the new style. Is it his fascination (and our boredom) with TM? Or the almost completely impenetrable INLAND EMPIRE?

I'm bored with TM, and didn't like IE at all, but it's not going to stop me loving the rest of his films.

In these days of hero worship you can actually be a Lynch fan without even having seen a single movie.
And it seems that "it was like something out of a Lynch movie" is trying to take the place of saying "something weird happened".

It is "cool" to both love and loathe lynch, so long as you're talking about or referencing him. The same thing goes for almost any famous person ever by degree. This is something that only becomes apparent when you're an actual fan of said person, and it is something that should be recognised, then forgotten about.

Yeah I have noticed nearly everything in media/culture, be it book, music, film, TV, that has any sort of vague weirdness is always described as "David Lynch meets derp de derp".  its become a cliche, alas.

he never made 'films'....he made 'pictures that move'....in fact, the more i distance myself from my hero worship of lynch...is he an idiot? i mean, yes he's very artisitic and uncompromising...but he seems to be immensly inarticulate, and whenever going into any vague detail about his working processes he either babbles or speaks as if he has a poor grasp of english.  hehe, im just cookin up food for thought, i dont think he's an idiot at all/. but theres a fine line between "not tainting a work" by giving intentions and interpretations, and justhaving nothing of substance to say

He will now retreat into the wilds of Fairfield, Iowa, like Col. Kurtz. Living in a makeshift peace palace, surrounded by his DL.com minions.

hehe. i am trying to stop my hero worshipping of Lynch, because it seems if there is no method behind something, its not worth worshipping the source. i still have great admiration to Lynch for his purely intuitive approach, or rather the intuitive things he comes out with...the original shots of traffic lights in TP tell more of a story than all of will ferrells films...capturing that odd, insdustrial stirring of the soul. one of my earliest memories was sitting in my kitchen, couldnt sleep, 4 in the morning, whilst the fridge was humming. it calmed me, and there was this weird ambience in the air. that to me is what Lynch captures, that's why i've been so drawn to his work

Sooo does that mean you think that, for example, taking a film written solely by Lynch, Mulholland Drive, doesn't make sense?

MD is basically the Wizard of Oz but without the "and you were there" scene to explain it.

It was the Wizard of Oz with an awesome lesbian couple.

i still think you're overly dismissive of MD, your description could be used to shrug off like a good third of every movie ever made

Do you think that would be cool if Laura Herring and Naomi Watts were my parents and I lived with them?

I didn't use it to shrug it off, just that it's not exactly complicated.

Not if you're one of those "it's Adam and Eve, not Madam and Eve!" people.

DL is as mainstream as indie gets. So the audience is more easily confused, and the name becomes a catchphrase for "everything I don't understand," which is A LOT, hence the repetition. Fame is a fickle bitch. You can do her too well.

In all fairness, if my name turned into a punchline, and people laughed at every word that came out of my mouth on talkshows like Leno, and this went on and on for years like some awful nightmare I couldn't wake up from, I'd look for a universal field to hide in, too.

I know he can't just work at a bank, now, and he loves creating things. But part of me thinks he's alienating a lot of his fans deliberately, kind of a screening process.

But if he did you could experience a textured, unsettling bank transaction.

It just seemed that from what Booth was saying about the intentional fallacy, and you saying there was no method behind his films, isn't true if MD makes sense, because at least it would be a triumph in terms of plot (and visually the film is clearly brilliant). You're probably right that Lynch films aren't that confusing generally, but I think MD is a very complex film, however anyone compares it to the Wizard of Oz. Lost Highway too. I don't know, maybe I've just never been explained them, and I'm not clever enough to work it out by myself.

Do you not think that Mulholland Dr. is at least a "good" film?

I think MD straddles the fence between Lynch's regular movies (Wild at Heart/Blue Velvet), and his OMG weird movies (Lost Highway/Inland Empire), in that it is a regular movie but the deck has been shuffled in a way that it does not really make sense outright.
It comes across as much more consciously made that Lost Highway does.
