I thought Northern Exposure was retarded when it was on; a hokey, a poor (unimaginative) man's Twin Peaks. But compared to EVERYTHING else on TV, it grew on me as I got older. It's much better when you're stoned and on painkillers. Soothing. No brain power required, yet it doesn't automatically make you stupid like, oh, say, Friends.
Knowing every episode was filmed in the "neighborhood" helped, too. Made me feel at home. It started when I was dating a part-Eskimo film nerd who reminded me of Ed, though... where are you, Zak?

LOL... only if you have Vicodin and a great big bong. Give Season 1 a shot, but make sure you're laid way, waaaaay back first. Amanda's take is accurate: http://www.2000revue.com/community/topic.cfm?topicid=3329

If you're looking to get into Northern Exposure for the quirkiness, season 1 isn't it. It didn't start getting odd, real odd, until after that. Twin Peaks and Northern Exposure get compared a lot, but they're two totally different shows. The only thing they have in common is that they both made audiences say "WTF?" when they watched. NX has always been to me almost like a coming of age series, shown through the eyes of many different types of people. Sometimes those people were "out there", for sure. NX also had heart, which TP pretty much doesn't have at all. I liked NX's cast of characters better too, as well as it's themes revolving around nature and cultural customs. There were basically a dozen or so main characters each with their own VERY unique personas, while watching TP, the side characters always seemed rather bland and I always felt like "Yeah, yeah... get back to Cooper now". I'm not bashing TP, I love the show, but to me there's never been a better show than Northern Exposure. I'd recommend watching season 1 first, but only because a person should see the whole series and a lot of the groundwork laid in the first season is brought up later in the later, more oddball seasons.

Booth, I wouldn't party that hard to N-Ex. Funny mashup, nevertheless. http://www.glastonberrygrove.net/media/movies/index.html#EXPOSURE If there's any doubt who they have to give props to, this episode finale on the Salish observation deck was evidence enough...

My two favorite directors are Lynch and Akira Kurosawa. If I had to choose between them, I'd go with Kurosawa. Thankfully, I can enjoy both. And, I never really thought about but I Lost Highway and Mulholand Drive ... I like them at the very least as much as I do Twin Peaks.
Beauty is momentary in the mind - The fitful tracing of a portal; But in the flesh it is immortal. The body dies; the body's beauty lives. So evenings die, in their green going, A wave, interminably flowing. So gardens die, their meek breath scenting the cowl of winter, done repenting. So maidens die, to the auroral Celebration of a maiden's choral. Susanna's music touched the bawdy strings Of those white elders; but, escaping, Left only Death's ironic scraping. Now in its immortality, it plays On the clear viol of her memory, And makes a constant sacrement of praise. ('Peter Quince at the Clavier' by Wallace Stevens)

It's unbelievable to me that this was David Chase. I couldn't take it at all, Angel, and agree with your initial assessment. Oh well, maybe when I get older...

God, I'd forgotten how much I despised the Sopranos opening credits music. Then again, I couldn't stand the series either, so it all works out. There are actually a couple of shows I like more than Twin Peaks. I won't, however, go any further with it than that because I'm really not in the mood to be bashed for it. Regardless of which is or isn't my favorite show, I am so fully immersed and steeped in TP, it might as well be my fave.

No one is going to bash you. What are they? MASH? Star Trek?
If you are a festival organizer for your 3rd favorite show Twin Peaks, what do you do for these other shows?

It's not exactly a well-defined phrase anyway, but in what way does TP not have 'heart'? Also, whatever you say about TP's secondary characters, I don't think you could call them bland. Even characters I didn't like, such as Nadine and Windham Earle, were really individual characters. Then you have the log lady, Pete, Ben Horne, Andy, Dick etc.

EDIT: Ah, removed my original post because it's not worth it. (sorry Fud, this kind of makes your next post look odd) Suffice it to say, I am an organizer of the TP festival because I love the show, I love the fans, I love the area, I love the festival in general, and it's something I thoroughly enjoy and consider a great way to spend my time and my money each summer. A show doesn't have to be brilliant and at the top of your list for it to bring that sort of reaction out of you. You just have to feel a connection somewhere in there. And I do. So that's that. Besides, the TP fest isn't like other fan festivals. It's not people jerking off celebrities and buying a shitload of crap souvenirs while being obnoxious tourists. That is why I avoid other fan festivals at all costs.
