Hello all

Have just got back into the amazing world of Twin Peaks thanks to getting the UK Gold Boxset this Christmas (best present I have had for a while!)

Been lurking on these boards for the past few days - amazing to see such intelligent debate still going strong 20 years later.

Anyway finished watching Ep.29 last night, and was moved to register and post, as I can't believe it affected me just as much today, as it did when I was 16 (viewing for the first time).

Just so, so gutted at Cooper's fate - Even though I obviously knew what was coming this time, I still found myself hoping he'd get out some way - He seems to have a decent head start on the doppleganger Dale and I was willing him to somehow win that race this time (Yes, I do realise it probably was a race he could never win in the first place!)

Which brings me to my key question to you folks - It's pretty obvious that the whole Black Lodge experience is a test that Coop fails - And badly too. As a 16 year old I could not accept this fact - Dale Cooper to me was the coolest man I'd ever seen on T.V. There is just no way I (naively) thought that he could lose to Bob etc.

On repeat viewings, I now realise maybe he wasn't so perfect after all (His behaviour with Earle's wife is a bit dodgy really), and Windom really does send him to pieces in those final few episodes. He ignores the Giant's warning for some reason, then is very ineffectual at the Miss Twin Peaks crowning (surely him Harry and Hawk should have been capable of getting to Earle somehow). However, he is still Agent Cooper, and certainly shows a lot of balls going into that place on his own - I'd definitely have taken Harry and his massive shotgun with me!!

So why does he fail the test?? I still don't get it - He deals with the freakish Man from another place OK and doesn't seem particularly phased by Doppleganger Laura etc. He is in fact focused on getting to Annie the whole time (which is exactly what he should be doing isn't it?)

However, should he have quizzed Bob where Annie is?? (she vanishes just before he shows up)- Bob tells him to go, and he does that without question - Perhaps that was a mistake?

He also runs when he first sees the Doppleganger Dale, that again was probably not a good move - But the Cooper I know and love takes the Doppleganger on - Oh, it doesn't make any sense!!!! What a killer ending though...

Anyway, am off to watch FWWM now and really depress myself!!

Please feel free to point me to any prior discussions you guys have had about this (couldn't find anything but this board is huge!)

All  the best to fellow Peaks fans.. Wherever you are...

I think the impression is that most would fail the test since we all have imperfect courage.

See how Hawk explains to Cooper "You may be fearless in this world, but there are other worlds."

Cooper just wasn't ready...and fell to his darker self because of it.

Cooper was just simply no exception.  However, it has been rumored that if there was a season 3 or more movies, Dale WAS eventually going to defeat Bob...we will just never know how.  (or will we?)  lol

25 years later.....who knows?

ye - I too was just thinking about what Hawk said to Coop prior to him entering the black lodge, especially the "it is said, if you enter the black lodge with imperfect courage it will utterley annihilate your soul".  I think the fact that the Giant/Senor Droolcup and Good Laura were there was a sign to him not to be afraid, however, the fact he both jumped and ran away twice from doppel Laura (both times it seemed to em that Earle had some kind of evil control ov er her - Coop only disappears when his face appears super-imposed over Laura's) but it makews me wonder if this was enough to make Dopp Laura think Coop was afraid of her and that's why she returns a second time after Maddy's warning.  Basically when Coop sees her he looks like he's pooping himself, as well as he seems somewhat afraid/confused on Dopp LMFAP when Maddy Dopp appears, but less so when he returns to be caalled the Dopp.  I think it is visibly evident that he has made a mistake entering the lodge with imperfect courage, again even though good spirits are there to tell/help him realise its' only a test.  He seems unsure of Leland too, then I always thought when he witnesses BOB take Earle's soul, he looks kind of impressed by that, but somewhat scared too.  He gets really scared when he sees his grinning dopp which proceeds to chase him and after that it's kind of evident that there's no hope. (Especially at the last moment when the terrified "good" Coop runs into the camera.)

"watch out for my cousin.."

Cheers guys - some intersting points there

Hadn't really considered the idea that ANYBODY would fail the test - it's an interesting point

Also think you are right Maddy when you say he wasn't ready - He's being pulled in two completely different directions by the end of season 2 - one by Windom, and the other by his experiences with Annie - He kind of alludes to this in a scene with her at the RR, and she goes on about seeing his face in fried eggs or something...

A time when you are locked in a life and death struggle with your greatest enemy, probably wasn't the best time to get a new girlfriend in retrospect - Think this really hits home at the Miss Twin Peaks pagent where he acts like a complete rabbit in the headlights, once he realises she has a good chace of winning (couldn't he at least have positioned himself closer to the stage or something?)

I wonder if the Dale of season 1 (whos only real distractions are pie and coffee) would win through. I think he would do - or is that just my 16 year old man crush shining through again?
