I was thinking... What was your first reaction after watching TP FWWM?

Honestly, I was quiet disoriented. And I still have many problems watching FWWM.

I thought, 'This is a more terrifying world than anything I've ever seen before, because it's half-familiar (the suburban town, the middle class family, the woods) with this inscrutable nightmare superimposed over it.'

Every scene drew me in and made me completely uncomfortable.

i was put off by it at first. mostly because i hadn't read the diary, and because i had it built up in my head that this was THE LAST NEW PEAKS EVER so i was expecting the moon.

now i think it still has some serious flaws, but it's really great.

Surprised by how dark it was (I think I was expecting it to be a bit like Blue Velvet), but at the same time fascinated by this flip side of Twin Peaks that we'd only barely scratched the surface of in the series. I saw it five times in the two weeks that it was in our local theater.

First reaction was that the people at Cannes were right.

I was just devastated by the ending. The haunting image of Laura screaming made me forget all about Philip Jeffries and Deer Meadow and all that insanity.

Right after seeing it in the theaters in '92:

- That was the most depressing movie I have ever seen.

- Very upset by the lack of closure to the series and Lynch opting for a prequel.  Frustration times 200.

I have given it a fair chance but it has not gotten better with subsequent viewings.

It's a little frustrating that he chose use most of the movie to tell the part of the story that we already understood (Laura Palmer was murdered, duh). I still think the prologue is amazing.

Booth is an unwavering butthole with a heart of gold.  And yes I am still going on "hiatus" after today.

sometimes, when cheryl lee is deep in the struggle with her wig to see who can be the least convincing in their role, i see a glimpse of the movie booth sees. special call outs:

"donna.....are you.....my best.....FRIEND" -- shatner himself could not have inserted weirder pauses

"he was.....FAMILILIAR!!!" hey david, you're allowed to shoot more than one take just fyi

The first time I saw FWWM, I went with my sister, who was realativly unfamiliar with the TV show.  She liked it more than I did.  I loved the first half, but was deeply disturbed by Laura's story.  It was much darker than I anticipated.  Honestly, I was expecting it to be more like the series, with a lot of humor and inside jokes.  I saw it in the theatre 3 more times, and liked it more and more upon continuous viewing.

Ben:  "We've laid in a gala reception for your fair-haired boys tonight.  All of Twin Peaks' best and brightest."

Jerry: "We're holding it in a phone booth?"

I find it really strange that people think that, because it's the opposite of my reaction! I liked the Laura stuff. We may already know the story, but it was great to actually see what happened. As for the prologue, the TP mythology is mildly interesting, but the prologue is too muddled and nonsensical to add that much anyway. It's the emotional stuff and imagery that has always interested me about TP (and I include BOB in both those categories). I don't mind the mythology but I would never go to too great lengths to explore it. I find the Packard Mill stuff very difficult (let alone the ring and garmonbozia)!

Well, for me, focusing on Laura's death is less engaging for two reasons: (1) we already know she died horribly and was abused by her father...showing us every excruciating detail might be "powerful," but it's unnecessary and (2) it's kind of lame to see the nuts and bolts of how she was molested and murdered--the way it was suggested in the series was far more interesting (just my two cents).

I suppose I chose the word "frustrating" because I think what most people were dying to know is what happened to Dale Cooper, not how Leland plowed Laura.

I suppose I wasn't disappointed because I had already heard what the film was going to be about. When I think about the possibilities of continuing Cooper's inhabitation by BOB, I guess I do feel a little cheated. But once I knew that this was going to be mainly about "the last seven days of Laura Palmer" I was pleased with the way they dealt with it.

"I reeeally shouldn't be watching this with my mother. Yeah, just fast-forward through this cunnilingus scene, Mom."

We watched Mulholland Dr. separately.

Sure I'm a deadbeat dad but I'm still the biological father so I know a thing or two about what's best.

Yes, but it's better put together than FWWM.

really, i think FWWM is a mix of truly great scenes and some really shitty ones. everything up until the main theme kicks in is terrific. then laura kind of asses around a lot and things get spotty. i like the scenes where bobby kills the deputy, and the half-hour beginning with laura running into the log lady up through donna asking "why do you do it?" then there's truly awful and poorly written/directed scenes like the family dinner "wash under your fingernails" and the too on-the-nose stuff at mo's motors.

i still enjoy it, overall, i just think that between cheryl lee's spotty acting and the flow being interrupted by uneven pacing/quality, it's just not as good as it should've been. could have been. whatever.

One of my favorite Peaks moments to imitate (OK, besides doing the Laura-Doppelganger-in-the-Lodge scream while we set up the red room at the fest every year) is "He...he looked FAMILIAR, have I MET HIM?!" Jared will attest to this. I do it quite well actually. :D That entire Mo's Motors scene just makes me giggle, to be honest.

But no matter which parts of the film make me chuckle or grin or do really spot-on imitations, starting from the train car to the end of the movie will always sober me up and usually make me cry in some fashion. I don't really know why. I have partial explanations but it would take a while to go thru. Suffice it to say, Laura's murder in FWWM gives me the same kind of chills that Maddy's murder does in ep 14.
