Thank you, J. Intelligence is the ability to combine unrelated facts to form abstract ideas. Look for me in Film Quarterly, I could make a living at this. (p.s. Ann Rule's book is supposedly the best.)
Are you into new historicism, Cooped? I remember you mentioned critical theory in the books thread talking about Pale Fire.
What do you think of Twin Peaks' mass popularity in the 80's being its use as a therapeutic "show me on the doll where the bad man touched you" exercise to deal with the social issues of the Green River and Ted Bundy cases? Or even Twin Peaks (season 1) as a period piece, whose subject matter (a specific kind of unsolved murder mystery) was the product the inevitable, unconscious or conscious influence of real events on a team of writers' minds?

I was arrested, again (second WTO anniversary celebration,) on the same day as Ridgway. The boys in holding kept popping up anytime there was any activity "is that him, is that him?" I thought, but did not say, 'I doubt they'll send a rock star like that through the same tubes they send the rest of us through.' I also worked with the daughter of a SPD detective who was on the Task Force. She assured me he was guilty at the time while I had the attitude 'well maybe yes and maybe no but he hasn't been convicted.' She was, of course, correct but I was, and am, somewhat dismayed by how rare it is to find people who actually hold to the 'innocent until proven guilty' standard.

Funny story, redbear. I guess Ridgway started confessing and cooperating as soon as he was arrested but it was very low-pro. No one has come forward about why people involved in the case were lying to the press about him pleading not guilty.

Why? It has nothing to do with this thread. I'm serious, though. You might see parts of this thread in one of the journals.
I was going to drop it, but as long as I'm on the subject...
Ridgway said he got the idea to insert the rocks in the bodies because of his time in the Navy, stationed in the South Pacific he saw strippers sit on beer bottles. If someone involved in writing that episode knew about this, I would be eternally amused.
And for those hip to the Stop and Pray, Ann Rule's book mentions Ken's Truck Stop and diner about 8 times. One time when she's driving around with one of Ridgway's ex-girlfriends and she's pointing out places they used to have public sex. I shit you not. The Green River Killer probably got busy at the Stop and Pray. I am totally bringing this book to the Fest to gross everyone out.

Why? Because I need a copy of your transcripts. Duh. Although morbid, your study of the Green River Killer has gotten me interested in the case because of the locale and circumstances.

A psychic found one of the skeletons in North Bend, following a vision.
The same psychic, Barbara Kubik-Patten, also found one of the first riverbed victims.

That's cool. I like you telling us about this case. Was the psychic one of the gifted or the damned?

At least one of the bodies, Tina Thompson in 1984, was found wrapped in plastic. Ridgway's routine was to bring the prostitutes to his suburban home in Auburn, kill them, then wrap them in carpet or plastic to transport them to a dump site. "The girl is in the bedroom and then I'd pull her off the bed on to the rug and grab her by the feet and drag her around the corner so uh it was easy on the plastic 'cause it slid so easy and I could wrap... wrap the plastic around her and take her out that way." He knew the plastic would also prevent the transfer of forensic evidence. Reminiscent of the golf bag scene in Twin Peaks, he also said he'd transport a body in his son's footlocker. Sometimes the remains would stay in his truck in the parking lot all day while he was at work, to have sex with on his lunch break.

What was the GRK's occupation?

He did DuPont airbrush paint jobs at the Kenworth Truck Co. in Renton for over 30 years. His nickname at work was Green River Gary because of the close-call bust.
But if you're looking for a Peaks connection, one of the dicks who left the case early on was certain- just based on hunches-- that a well-to-do lawyer was the perp.

Thanks a freakin' lot, 12r. You got me interested enough in the case to purchase the Ann Rule book Green River, Running Red. I've only read a couple of chapters so far, but there is a letter written to the author from a woman who got away from the GRK one night. This is interesting - when she asked his name when they were sitting in a car out in the middle of a field near the river, he said his name was BOB. On a sickening note, she said he had bumps all over his John Thomas

Ann Rule also mentions Gary Ridgway actually attended some of her book signings and lived less than a mile from her home and she has 2 daughters. She also mentioned she knew Ted Bundy (I believe her first novel back in the 70s was Stranger Beside Me about him). WTF? Sounds like a nice slice of heaven she resides in.

I just started the Ann Rule book, but so far I prefer. The Search for the Green River Killer for it's detail on the actual investigation. Rule changes names, this book holds nothing back. I admire her attempt to humanize the victims. You can browse Stranger Beside Me on Google books. QUOTE: he said his name was BOB. You know if there was full frontal of BOB in FWWM, Lynch would have given him the most evil wang in the world. Like the one in Tromeo & Juliet

I read numerous complaints in reviews about Rule going into excruciating detail about the victims, their entire lives, and extended families and I agree with this, although at the same time I almost feel like a bad person for thinking this about the humanization of the victims. Supposedly later in the book it focuses more on the serial killer and the case, but the jury is still out. That other book sounds more interesting if it is more about the investigation and no holds barred. I guess I am going to have a Green River library of books before all is said and done.

Well, Rule's was written with 20/20 hindsight, psychoanalyzing Ridgway throughout. It has the feel of a euology. He really worshiped her and wanted her to write good things about him even before he got caught, so she turned it around and focused on the women he called garbage.
The Search for the GRK was written, by journalists, before the murders were solved, in hopes it would draw the killer out. So it's exciting and lurid. The 2nd edition just has a brief addendum tacked on about the arrest and conviction, so you don't get a lot of detail about Ridgway. This is the cops vs. media story.
Follow the link below if you really want to just get down to the details of the crimes. It's the prosecuting attorneys breakdown of the charges, and it's highly readable.
http://www.metrokc.gov/kcsc/docs/Ridg_Summary.pdf
I probably got the most out of the confession DVD that came with Serial Killers: Issues Explored Through the Green River Murders (written by one of the co-authors of Search for GRK.) The 155 pages is a supplement to the DVD, and really focuses on him and how he was dealt with after the arrest.
I'm not bothering with the Det. Keppel book about how Bundy "helped" explain the MO of the GRK. I saw the A&E movie based on it, starring Cary Elwes as Ted Bundy. It was actually rather good.
Det. Reichert only wrote his book for to advance his political career. The Lifetime miniseries based on that was SUUUUUUUCKIE.
When I'm done with this term paper, I'll be Green River'd out.

I'm currently on page 341 and 90% of the text has concerned the victims. It's not been bad per se, but I feel like I haven't delved into the investigation itself or the mind of the GRK yet. Help me, Angel, you're my only hope.

It picks up soon, j. I finished it last night. Stick it out.
Rule's book is the winner because it talks about the GR's personal history.

I chuckled when there was a reference to Mount Si and Twin Peaks The connection is official now!
I don't get all of these whackos that are confessors that have nothing to do with the case. It is chilling and sad seeing the photos of the prolific number of women he murdered. I am shocked he was able to get away with it for so long because he wasn't extremely intelligent.

It kind of sounds like I was complaining previously, but this has been one of those books where I'll finish a chapter and hesitate for a moment and then decide I'll read just one more chapter. This vicious cycle has been repeating itself over and over all weekend long.

I know. Her style is addictive. She cares about the victims she writes about and its contagious. How about Judy? Her story breaks my heart. p.s. Did you notice how he calls one of his victims "The Log Lady?" Actually, he probably referred to more than one of them this way, since he used the fallen logs on the hillsides he favored as landmarks. (Delores, Sandra, Martina & Pammy.) Delise and Lisa, two of the North Bend bodies, were found between and underneath logs.

If you read the first pages of The Search for the GRK, it sounds startingly like the first scene in the script for Northwest Passage. Only instead of the sawmill, it's the slaughterhouse. But a worker goes fishing, sees a body in the water near a logjam, calls the police-- thus the story begins.
