Calling people ugly is the height of cuntery, especially on the internet. It's sweet that people who aren't  pretty, or popular, or very nice in real life can find a niche in cyberspace but every thread's becoming the same. I don't care what some random person I've (thankfully) never met thinks of a television character but it's like the board's been hijacked by glue sniffing sex offenders posing as alpha males. I've never known men who talk about women in such a derogatory way, certainly not fictional/celebrity women who aren't going to fight back. It's just wrong.    

... and this is why these threads always get deleted. I remember a Who's The Ugliest Character thread I ripped someone open for posting. On Imdb, the 7th grade of the Internet- fine. But some of the mods here are trying to maintain business relationships with the celebrities.

Oh ugh, I remember that thread. It was awful.

And then there was the entire thread dedicated to making fun of James Hurley, only it quickly went from it being a "what a lame character" thread to being about things that were actually attacks on James Marshall. (for the record...ripping on a character's looks is the same as ripping on the actor themselves; unless prosthetics are involved, that's someone's real live face you're making fun of there...not cool)

The tao aside (ha!) I think it is worth noting that the origin of most of this shit is the generally poor state of our self images in this society and the fact that are taught to compensate for this by tearing others down rather than building ourselves up.  This is reflected in racism, sexism and any number of other isms.  This is not meant to excuse any behavior that people might find objectionable but rather an attempt to open the possibility of compassion which in turn might open the possibility of extricating ourselves from the cycle.

Considering beauty, it is not an unalloyed good that many people seem to believe.  Joan Chen might want to be able to practice her craft without being asked 'you don't mind doing nudity, do you?' every single time.  I have a friend who has been described, with some accuracy, as 'like a Greek god.'  He does not seem to be significantly happier than I (more Norse god like) am.

Anyway and as always, just another middle aged, middle class white mans opinion in a world full of it.

I never understood why Nadine gets bagged on so much anyways.  I realize that she was a bit hokey in the second season, but I found her to be very interesting in season one.  Every town needs a wackadoodle.
