Just to be annoying, I'll put this thread back on track (although I'm not sure if I succeed) :D Jennifer Lynch said she was told who the killer was and she wrote some hints in the diary but she had to remove some text from it as the hints became too obvious. The way BOB was written in the diary was approved by David Lynch and Mark Frost. The killer was known and I think one of the hints was the part where Laura writes something about not remembering if it was a dream or not but Leland had said some dirty stuff to her. The most fascinating thing about Leland and Bob goes away when it gets treated as "just a demon from the woods" or "just a metaphor" thing. Bob can be both at the same time and I think he was supposed to be like that. After all, they knew who the killer was before they knew anything about Bob so I think it's quite odd to think that whatever they had thought Leland was all about was put aside as they "found" Bob. I can't imagine Mark and David going like "ok, Leland was a man who sexually abused his own daughter and eventually killed him but let's forget that and change it with this thing about a possessing demon doing all the bad stuff" :D And what comes to the portrayal of Bob in the diary, I think it was very entertaining, creepy and gave a lot more character to Bob.

I could just as easily be "Leland did it so let's not accidentally let him off the hook".

Well, they knew from the beginning, before they knew about Bob, that Leland killed her, or at least that's what they've said. However there's no source to prove that they had thought anything about incest so I can't say they knew that Leland was a sexually abusive father for the whole time but I assume they had something like that in their mind as the pilot had a part where it was made clear that Laura was raped several times. Of course they could've thought that the rapists weren't connected to the killer and the killer didn't rape her at all but I think it's more probable that they had that in mind.

More like:
How can we personify the icky-gross animal impulses of an otherwise normal dad? Child sex abuse is something so widespread, and so damaging to the fabric of the wholesome, civilized American dream, couldn't it be possibleT that (I mean, wouldn't it be a nice, easy explanation if) an evil from another world, slipping in where it senses weakness, is responsible for making good dads give in to their id?
The blame isn't displaced, it's shared. Leland admits he killed his daughter, but his doppleganger blames it on BOB.

If it's just Dorothy, and it's her story - which it is to me - then everything is fine ... When you start talking about "women" versus "a woman," then you're getting into this area of generalization. There's a billion of different stories and possibilities." |

Lynch said that when someone called him a misogynist, right? Yeah, I hate feminist theory, it's so reductionist. It lumps all representations of women together. There are women like Dorothy- why can't someone make a movie about a victim if there are victims? Plus, Lynch has her rescued her at the end. How is that misogynistic?
I read this biographical account story about some kind of group therapy camp, and this guy who had raped his daughter for years was coming clean, and the psychologist leading the group said to him, in front of everyone "How does it feel to have done to your daughter what every father secretly wants to?"
I doubt the truth of this statement, but there IS something about taboo that makes the forbidden attractive just because it is. (Yep, I was reading Bataille tonight.) So on a primal level, maybe Leland is "every good dad." If not, there are good dads gone bad he could certainly represent.

:D
But that's nothing compared to Dario and Asia Argento. "Asia, honey, you'll be acting in my movie! Isn't it great! Be prepared for the scene where you are naked and get raped. Don't worry, I'll be there watching and directing you." Asia Argento once said when asked about what he thinks of it when his father is directing her in scenes like that and she laughed and said that it's probably better not to think too much of it as who knows what's going to be revealed. :D
