The whole "who's the real monster, us or them" theme is really boring, to me at least.

Romero's political leanings are about as subtle as a brick to the face.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

that was land of the dead, which sucked shit. Day was about intellectuals trying to work with hawks while there was a new and unknown danger outside their walls. what the danger is doesn't really matter, to me anyway.

That's what I include in that theme, we are trapped and we can't work together even though we should no matter how contrived the friction is.

You should really see this movie

how in the world is it contrived? some people are pie-in-the-sky big idea types who can't deal with immediate reality. some are tank-brained goobers who don't know how to deal with something they can't shoot. put them together with an immediate threat and limited rescources and yes, there's going to be friction. it's no more contrived than any other piece of fiction

It just comes off as forced.

that's a matter of personal taste imo, not a problem with the film

lynch stuff comes off as pretentious as hell and incredibly forced to a lot of people, yet here we are *shrug*

I wonder why the diary was so short.  It was 180+ pages and a ton of them had around one sentence on them or said PAGE RIPPED OUT.  Maybe Jennifer Lynch has an unabridged version she can release.  And Scott Frost's Cooper book rarely gets any love around here.

that's because the cooper book isn't that good. i mean it's not bad, but it's not great.

i asked jennifer lynch at the fest if she had some kind of page limit or requirement, she said no. so that's one mystery down. :)

and to my ears that's something akin to "i dislike hitchcock;s psycho, i prefer the sequels and the 1998 remake"

guess we'll just have to agree to disagree

Well that's just silly. Though Hitchcock is overrated.

And by that I'm not shitting on Hitchcock's contributions to cinema, just that many of his movies have not aged well.

Just curious, did you mean "Romero did it 'first' so he does it best"?

I've read it plenty of times on the internet so I needed to make sure.
I personally think that Return of the living dead and Braindead are both superior to Romero's movies.

Though I truly love aspects of the movie, in my more cynical moments my synopsis of the film is this: A disturbed husband/father has an affair with a waitress and is driven to murder her when she threatens to expose him. His daughter, whom he's been molesting for years, breaks through to the reality that her father has been screwing her, not the demon she's created to deal with such a an ugly truth. Father realizes that she's caught on and kills her before she too can expose him. Ho hum.

I don't think this has to be an alternate interpretation.  Again, "the evil that men do" theory was posited in the series, as well.  It helps the film stand alone, while not excluding the supernatural element.

those are both solidly in the "comedy" category though. total apples and oranges as far as i can tell. "equally skillfully made" is about as good as i can do. i mean airplace is one of the finest films ever made but you're not really "allowed" to compare comedies with drama

So Day of the dead is Ordinary People now all of a sudden?
