"Pain don't hurt."  Dalton (Patrick Swayze) in Roadhouse

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

I have a collection of faves.  Here are a few:

There are as many in Hollywood who've claimed to have been "Red Scare victims" as there are Frenchmen who've claimed to have fought in the Resistance.

It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances.  The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible.  Oscar Wilde

Life is a comedy for those who think ... and a tragedy for those who feel.  Horace Walpole

Socialism is the opiate of the intelligensia.  Post-modern adage unattributable to any one individual

As a general rule, people -- even the wicked -- are much more naive and simple-hearted than we suppose.  And we ourselves are too.  Dostoyevsky "The Brothers Karamazov"

God (in whom he disbelieved) and his truth were gaining mastery over his heart which still refused to submit. Dostoyevsky again.  "The Brothers" again.

The key here, I think, is to not think of death as an end but think of it more as a very effective way of cutting down on your expenses.   Woody Allen - "Love and Death"

“Half a truth is often a great lie.”

Ben Franklin

"Oh no! Not another fucking elf!" - Hugo Dyson

Well, no.  He wasn't an elf but rather a type of angel or demigod that was sent by the gods (or was it left behind?) to help the free peoples of Middle Earth in their struggle against Sauron when they removed themselves beyond the Sundering Sea after the defeat of Melkor at the end of the first age. If I recall my Middle Earth history correctly, which I probably don't.

But thanks for the quote anyway (are you sure you didn't paraphrase?) You've taught me more about literary figures and porn stars than anyone else in the last 10-15 years.

"Ack! Recursion recursion!" - Some Random Guy

"Anyway that's a large part of what economics is - people arbitrarily, or as a matter of taste, assigning numerical values to non-numerical things. And then pretending that they haven't just made the numbers up, which they have.  Economics is like astrology in that sense, except that economics serves to justify the current power structure, and so it has a lot of fervent believers amount the powerful."  - Kim Stanley Robinson by way of 'Vlad' in Red Mars (pg. 297, Bantam Paperback)

Another, timely, RAW quote.  Thanks Rigpa, I'm guessing your a fan?  I own Cosmic Trigger but have not read it yet. I can't find my Schrodinger's Cat, which is typical.  I can't find my cheshire cat either.

Two from B. Russell

"The demand for certainty is one which is natural to man, but is nevertheless an intellectual vice."- Philosophy for Laymen found in Unpopular Essays.

"A certain type of superior person is fond of asserting that "everything is relative."  This is, of course, nonsense, because, if everything were relative, there would be nothing for it to be relative to." - The ABC of Relativity,  Fourth Revised Edition (Mentor, 1985)

You guess right, Redbear! RAW ranks up there for me with Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, Terence McKenna, and Tom Robbins.  Wise pranksters all!  A friend gave me Cosmic Trigger in the early 80's, and it was one of those life-changing books.  I just recently scored through Amazon Schrodinger's Cat III, The Homing Pigeons, a book lost-in-divorce years ago.  Now the trilogy is complete in my bookcase again!  Here's another gem from there, credited to "Pope Stephen"--

"The first entry of Sin into the mind occurs when, out of cowardice or conformity or vanity, the Real is replaced by a comforting lie."
