Do you prefer the darker, explicit version of the Twin Peaks universe shown in FWWM or the tamer, cleancut version shown in the TV series?  I know the last 7 days of Laura's were as dark as they come, but there may be some out there that would have liked to see Twin Peaks in this no holds barred fashion on a channel like HBO instead.  Some were horrified by the content of FWWM (us Lynch fans already knew what to expect in his R-rated arenas) and may just like the series.  I like both in different ways.  Is there a particular side of the fence you sit on concerning censored or uncensored Twin Peaks or do you like it just the way it is (like I do, although if someone held a gun to my head, I would probably go with the series)?

The less overt violence and women in lingerie of the series works, but it would feel like coitus interruptus if brains didn't splatter and boobs didn't come out eventually. Lynch just does it so well!

FWWM may be more explicitly dark, but the show does a whole lot more with a whole lot less.
Plus the movie is pretty boring and the show has more mood in five minutes than the movie has in its entirety.

i don't see it as being as clear cut as movie vs. series.

tp stuff i like: episodes 1-16, 29-30, the first 45 minutes of the movie, and the secret diary. everything else has some pretty big issues

the problem with the movie is that it's missing the deleted scenes. i dont say this out of some kind of "OMG i need the scenes" madness, but i think they'd really come in handy to break up the almost 2 hours of "laura gets shit on: the movie" on some levels it works because you, like laura, are so relieved when she finally croaks. but unlike the show the movie isn't fun, it's an ordeal. that's both a compliment and a complaint.

When I read the title I automatically thought 'FWWM' as i love the dark side of it..

Then I thought a little more about it and Twin Peaks wouldn't be Twin Peaks without some of those amazing scenes in the first series and episode 28/29,, I really like the character of Wyndham Earle and think that most of the dark scenes from the series with him in work really well.

So to answer the original question - a little bit of both.

i like the laura of the diary a lot more than any other version. she seems like a genuinely complex character, as opposed to the series where she sounds like a cooing infant on jacoby's tapes, etc (if you are a man and you find that tone of voice sexy on a woman SEEK HELP), or the movie where sheryl lee's acting was all over the place (and even when it was spectacular it was undercut by that wig)

This may be a bad example - The Blair Witch Project (I know, people either love or hate this movie, but I respect what they did with as little budget that they had) - I love how this film never shows the Blair Witch - using the imagination incites infinitely more fear than showing (the first Jaws movie did the same thing for the first portion of the film).  I think the horrors of Twin Peaks and the Black Lodge are more powerful the less they show and the less we know about it because Twin Peaks has always been and will always be about its mysteries.

Interesting observation. Would people have preferred FWWM more if it had been written as a sequel to the series finale rather than a prequel to the pilot?

Most people would say yes, because we already knew the Laura Palmer story (through the series and diary) - she was murdered.

I would have preferred it if it had been a good film, but as it is I can just not watch it.
That's good enough for me.

I did like how FWWM established the wavering of time (Is it future or is it past?  - did the LMFAP say this in a deleted scene?) and the Black Lodge links-Annie,etc. (Gordon Cole would be proud) to post-series.

The prologue is the best part of the movie but it's not good enough to make me want to watch it again.

I think FWWM is pretty plain when it comes to the cinematography.

Hard one... I do like the dark nature and more mature content of the movie, but my fave part of TP is Cooper, and the movie didn't have much Cooper in it. I'd say I like the series more.

The Deer Meadow and Pink Room scenes were the best part of FWWM IMHO.

If FWWM would have been a smash hit at the box office, do you think Lynch and Co. would have made another feature film?

Definitely like the series better.  The movie is just too painful and depressing, with none of the humor of the series to provide a balance for the darkness.

The intro and Deer Meadow sequences have that balance, but I see what you mean. Once the story shifts to Twin Peaks its pretty much a non-stop downer; however, given the story that was being told, I'm not sure how well any humorous interludes would have worked.

if you read the script and the deleted scenes, they are just humorous enough that they could've helped without totally destroying the tone.

That line alone would have launched a whole series of Twin Peaks movies that would be as financially viable as Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc.
