I just watched this last night and thought it was a great feature.  The sequence where Badalamenti plays Laura Palmer's theme, narrating David Lynch's instructions, is simply mesmerizing.

I was pleased to see Julee Cruise get some face time - though I thought her story about her & Lynch's falling out was a bit TMI.  Fun story - I saw Julee Cruise in "Return to the Forbidden Planet" in NYC in the early 90s.  She's a real belter, that one, and plays a mean French Horn.

My one complaint about the featurette - and this really annoyed me - is that there is no mention of the main "Falling" theme.  I can't believe they did these interviews and didn't ask about it, or that Badalamenti had nothing interesting to say on creating one of the most oddly memorable themes in TV history.

On a related note, now that the Season Two Soundtrack is out, does anybody know if there are any plans to re-release the out-of-print Original Television Soundtrack?  It could really use some re-mastering - that 1990 vintage CD sound is pretty sub-par these days.

(Boy, you could not escape that soundtrack in 1990/91.  It was on heavy rotation throughout my college dorm right along with the Dead and the Doors!)

You're right. They never waste enough time giving people some informations on the things they would like to know.. I mean, I love David, but how many other times am I gonna hear the "Bob story" again from the man? Let's move on to something else, Dave! Anyway, the bit where Angelo plays Laura's theme and tells how it was created is the best moment in the special features.

there's such a disconnect between the angelo you see in interviews and the angelo you hear in "real indication." i'd love to see the silly angelo at some point

i finally picked up the gold box recently, and i thought this was one of the most interesting features. i also liked the segment on the second half of season two, aka "the apology." the fest documentary was something else though, it really summed up the experience of going IMO. it really had everything-- some couples where one is dragging the other, that BATSHIT CRAZY GUY ("he has made certain deceisions to get to where he is today..."-- jennifer lynch), amanda's fun outfits, some angel T&A, jordan and kelly being the eye of the storm, and jared being 100% unadulterated jared. if only it included 2 minutes of how amazingly disappointing twede's is, it'd be perfect

Yes, it was really interesting to finally see the Twin peaks festival from a European's perspective. And i got to see some of you, guys! I wish they could arrange something similar here in Europe, of course it woul just be different because there wouldn't be any real location to visit.

We actually shot a segment at Twede's with the new owner but the interview was just as disappointing.  It just wasn't that interesting of a story and would have dragged down the whole piece.  Plus, and there is where we might disagree, I don't make documentaries for just ultra-hardcore fans.  I try to make them for everybody.  So if there's some nitty gritty piece of minutia that you're dying to hear about but we spend time on a story you've heard a million times before, please keep in mind that most people need to be brought up to the same speed you've been enjoying for years.

As for Angelo's interview, I actually let him go through my questions first, something I rarely do.  He wrote detailed notes on everything so, as is the norm on these projects, we discussed far more than what made it into the final cut.  But when you edit these things together and you're faced with telling an interesting story and dealing with disc capacity issues (yes, believe it or not, there is a limit to how much these discs will hold), you have to make some sacrifices.  Plus, when you're dealing with a piece that is largely driven by only two interviews, sometimes it's difficult to make meaningful editorial connections that would flow naturally between the two.  We asked other interviewees about the music, but their responses were largely limited to the "wasn't it amazing?" kind, and as sincere are those comments were, that kind of praise gets old real fast.

I'm glad people enjoyed the "Where We're From" featurette.  It was a lot of fun to work on...even if it was a pain to interview Julee above a noisy street in Manhattan and then digitally composite her into a more Peaksian background shot later in Los Angeles. :)

didn't realize you posted here, i recognize the name from the dvds though. :) quick question-- was it an intentional choice to focus so heavily on the negative side of the second season, or was that dictated by the interviews?

I appreciate all of the candid responses.  Most DVD extra interviews are basically a commercial for how much that person wanted to fornicate with everyone else involved in the production due to the perfect experience.

no don't get me wrong i wasn't complaining, i was just wondering if it was an editorial decision or if he just looked at all the footage and went "well, it's all negative, time ot get to work." it's not like i expect anyone to get all misty-eyed over M.T. Wentz or the pine weasel

honestly on rewatching the series, M.T. Wentz and norma's retarded new father-in-law makes me a lot angrier than little nicky or anything else. Wentz is the turd in the punchbowl of those otherwise great episodes around 13-16 or so.

Well, I have to completely agree with you Nefud. There were a little too much moments in the season 2 featurette where cast members basically bashed it. Yes, it was candid, okay, but God, you should also think of finding the good in it. That's sort of bad publicity. They could at least have tried to find some good elements in season 2. I remember only Mark frost truly defending season 2 with the Windom Earle storyline and the powerful final 2 hours.

And personally I didn't dislike the pine weasel or the little Nicky storyline, as Nefud said, the whole part where Norma's mother comes back with her new husband was way much boring and unnecessary. But, anyway, I'm against all those who bash season 2. Someone in the interview, I think the actress who played Eileen Hayward (I don't remember her name, sorry), correctly said that Twin Peaks in season 2 after Leland's demise just turned out into a more regular tv show, which is not absolutely an insult.

I would have been more satisfied if they cut out the whole dumb bit of Kimmy Robertson going with her "Season 2 kind of sucked! I wasn't even watching it anymore!" . I mean, is she really dumb or does she just like to respond to interviewers resuming her character's sillyness?

I can imagine an interview with the owner of Twede's would be a huge disappointment considering they've relegated the Twin Peaks memorabilia to a corridor next to the toilet in favour of Tweetie Pie soft toys.

So, has Badalamenti talked much about the "Falling" theme?  And am I correct in thinking that its appearance on the Julee Cruise album predates its appearance in Twin Peaks?  If so, perhaps there's not much to say about it that's relevant to the series.

Still a great theme, though!  And a great documentary.  I've watched the "Larah Palmer's Theme" keyboard sequence 3 times now.  :)

It gave me the great feeling that this man and David Lynch are really on the same page. I mean, one just starts telling a story and the other one visualizes it and transforms it into a music that is simply sublime.

Also the anecdote where he tells the story of Paul McCartney playing for the queen, who was not up to it anymore because she needed to see the new episode of Twin peaks is pretty good!

That was a coverup by the queen.  She found out Paul's setlist was Ebony and Ivory 11 times.

That was a coverup by the queen. She had said that she would abdicate when pigs fly, and then she heard that the pig with Wings was next in line.

As a matter of fact, I was wondering how in the world someone like Angelo ended up working with Paul McCartney!

It wasn't an aggressively deliberate angle I wanted to take but the negative direction the interviews organically took wasn't entirely unexpected either.  Questions evolve over time, and as more and more people chimed in with their negative opinions of the second season, the direction seemed clear.  Plus, when I was watching the second season's first run on ABC as a fan back in the day, I remember being increasingly frustrated by the post-Leland plotlines, finding many of them silly and not in the original spirit of the pilot, so it was easy to explore those feelings via the interviews.  Generally, my intention with all of my feature-length interviews is to be brutally honest, addressing the good, the bad and the ugly in everything.  I don't see the value in hiding the problems and the challenges.  After all, it makes for a more inspirational story to see filmmakers overcome adversity and their work survive the test of time. I'm not a big fan of promotional fluff.

i thought it came off pretty well but then again it coincided with my opinions about the show so i would think that.

you know what never gets enough credit? andrew packard's return. i never saw it coming, but it still made a lot of sense and i found it completely entertaining.

Lynch and Badalamenti were early adopters of the term "bromance"
