Naw, I'm not trying to cheat and I'm not rubbing anybody's face in anything... (well, wait a minnit - I remember that 'boobies' thread...). I'm just having fun. You know, the Director's Chairs are a special thing for me. Dave was cleaning out some of his storage space and was going to throw them out. I grabbed four, and two had those names on them. Funny enough, because I met both of them in Maui. Richard Pryor had a home there in Kipahulu, past Hana, in a very remote area. I met him at The Hotel Hana Maui, where he was having some drinks with friends. I don't go up to celebrities in public, but I nodded at him and smiled. I ordered a round of drinks for the people I was with, and put them on my friend Sam Pryor's bill. (He was a great old guy, founder of PanAm Airlines, sold Charles Lindbergh his 5 acres there). Sam sold the hotel bananas and other produce from his orchards and instead of cash, kept a credit line open at the hotel bar for his friends to enjoy. When I told the bartender to put it on "Mr. Pryor's" bill, Richard looked up and said, "Hold on there! I don't even know this white boy". I laughed and leaned over to him and said, "Sam Pryor, not you". Turns out Richard lived only a short way from Sam and had met him. He laughed and said, "Oh, SAM!! That's OK. He's my cousin!" Sam of course was white, and everybody there knew him. The whole place broke up. New Year's Eve of 1990/91, I was playing at a club in Makawao, Maui. My band "Argentina Turner" was supporting a female blues singer named Terri Harrison. Turns out she was going out with Gary Busey, and he was visiting. She asked if he could sit in for a song or two. The guitar player grumbled, but agreed. So at soundcheck, in walks Gary. Real nice guy. He got up and played a blues song of some sort that I don't remember, then asked if we knew "Maybe, Baby" by Buddy Holly. A few of us had played it, so we worked it out and he was really happy. We had a few drinks together and talked about things music and I never saw him again. I was a little weirded out when I went to the first screening of "Lost Highway". He had been through the motorcycle accident between the time I met him and then, and spoke with a slur and was a little unco-ordinated looking. I asked David what had caused the difference, and he told me about the accident and said it had been a bit tough on the set because Gary had trouble with his lines. So those two chairs are a little link to my Maui days. The crew jackets from FWWM were rescues that day too. David threw out about 4 dozen of them and I asked him if I could take a few. Oh, my copy of "Dumbland" arrived today. OK, back to your regularly scheduled program!

Mr Neff, if time and fate ever permits, I'm buying enough rounds to get you telling stories for about three days.

oh, another one of THESE threads.

But seriously.  I remember not too long ago this thread (or a very similar one) was started and some people's lists were too long to even list, so they didn't bother.  I start doing it and then I just get stuck after so long.  But I don't really think I own anything "rare" as such, just your standard Peaks/Lynch fare.

Jamie, that's a great new Avatar!! Well, I'll tell ya, if you mean that, and you visit the SF Bay Area, we can work that out. People told me for years that I had so many road and celebrity stories (made my first record in 1965) that I should write a book. So I did, but I just concentrated on the filthy stuff, the ugly side of the music biz. It is being shopped to publishers now. There's a lot of fun stuff too, Like the time in Willie Nelson's dressing room....

Yes, OSS there is a Mulholland Drive Pilot, and it only exists on 300 VHS tapes that were made for ABC. Originally it was to be an ABC Television show, produced by Ron Howard's "Imagine Entertainment". We shot the pilot starting in January of 1999, while we were finishing "Straight Story". What a time that was! David cut a 2-hour version and went to deliver it, but the network reminded him that they sell advertising for a living, and that a broadcast hour was 44 minutes of program and 16 minutes of available time for sale. David cut the pilot to 88 minutes and those tapes were made. ABC did not pick it up and it went into Limbo. It wasn't until the Fall of 2000 that the thing went back into production after the French bought out ABC and Imagine and David wrote the last third or so of the movie. Some scenes that are close to each other were shot 18 months apart. Also, the original was framed for television and the later footage was shot 1:85, so there were tricky editing moments. A Word of Caution, though... the pilot might ruin the movie for you. It is very different, and not really finished. It is certainly NOT the movie up until the corpse. Remember the pilot was supposed to weave many storyline threads that would take forever to unravel. Some has been chopped from the early part, some new stuff was added. The music was all synthesizer. We didn't score it until December of 2000.

Thanks for the info, J.N.   I doubt that seeing this pilot would ruin the movie for me. How available would this undoubtedly rare bootleg item be? Would it be something that could be shown at the Fest?

Just bought the FWWM DVD today.  Walked into WalMart and it was in the 2/US$11 bin.  Got to the register, and it was only $3.88.  That's probably less than I paid for the blank VHS tape I used to record it from cable in the early 1990s.

DVD:

Mulholland Dr. (R1)
The Straight Story (R1) (Alliance Atlantis - AKA the sucky transfer)
Lost Highway (R0) (Shock Records - AKA the other sucky transfer)

I want a Region 1 DVD of Lost Highway, that is 2.35:1 with a 5.1 sound mix! Dadgummit! Shortly after I purchased Lost Highway, the mk2 edition comes out. Also, I purchased The Straight Story on Half.com, not knowing it wasn't the Disney DVD.

Other than that, I have the soundtracks for Mulholland Dr. and The Straight Story.
