Looking at some of the thread titles (Worst TP Scene, Top 5 Irritating Characters, Are episodes 17-28 a waste of time etc.), is there a particular negativity surrounding TP fans (or is it just on this board)

I suppose its because the quality of the show varied so much, even though it didn't last very long. There are so many different opinions on episodes aswell, exemplified by the "Should ep 16 be the last one I watch" thread where some members absolutely love ep 16 and some think it was rushed and overplayed.

I think most of the negativity is a "love to hate" type of thing. Plus, everyone's a fan, that's a given. We're all suitably obsessed. Sometimes you just want to breathe a bit and ridicule stuff.

Like James.

Like James singing.

Like James singing You and I.

I'm guessing.

Agreed! :)

I will defend every single minute of Twin Peaks until my last dying breath because I love the series, warts and all. But. Man, there's just so many things that are fun to rag on. :)

It's not entirely negative, though. People like different things. In the thread where I came up with vitriolic attacks on episode 16, I also defended episode 23 and 20 and highlighted good things. And I'll love "Just you" forever. (Together, forever, in love.)

Adversity gives you opportunities to defend TP, which is a lot more interesting that all of us endlessly saying "Golly I just love TP, how bout y'all?"

Because people feel passionately they strongly dislike some aspects as well as liking things strongly. I think "I love everything and it's perfect and no one can criticise" is the mentality of (no disrespect intended) a teenager. It's so dull getting into those conversations.

Also, we need stuff to talk about. Now the Gold set is out there is no new material to see, no follow ups or sequels or prequels. I don't think we'll ever see the deleted FWWM scenes.

Why would I fell disrespected? I think my original post came across the wrong way. I wasn't criticising the critcisicism (sorry, that doesn't read very well), I just thought it was intersting and wondered if it was the same for other shows' fans' boards. I definitely dislike quite a lot of aspects of TP aswell, not as much as I love maybe, but there are some elements that irritate me for certain. I probably don't like TP as much as I like some of DL's films aswell but it's a brilliant show to discuss.

I'm sure people will disagree with me on this one but any negativity must stem in part from the a certain malaise of boredom with Twin Peaks and over-familiarity. It's been around for so long now and people will have watched episodes to the point of dulling any excitement. Also, having an auteur figure like Lynch at its helm, the show has always been ripped for its more meagre offerings in comparison to his sterling episodes. Overall, its pretty boring though to read what people disliked about the show, etc.

For me, it's actually having an outlet to talk about it. There wasn't the internet around for most of us in 1990.  I had a great love for the show, and there wasn't a means to talk about the huge dip in stories and quality with people who shared the same passion for it.

I will love TP until I die but lets be honest some moments were really "jumping the shark".

Josie, James, Evelyn, Little Nicky, Dick.  Come on, now that's entertainment.

Perhaps there are obvious hokey aspects of TP that can easily be made fun of by any commentator. Maybe its just a fan thing to look back and laugh at things, I dunno. I watch all of Twin Peaks with a stoney-face and taking notes at the casual brilliance.

"Jumping the shark" refers to the Happy Days ep where Fonzie waterskiis Evel Kneivel-style over a penned shark. It means a hyped-up gimmick intended to garner high viewership. To be fair, the characters named were mere subplots in the larger story, whether anyone found them compelling or not.  WHAT did you find so objectionable about certain elements of the show & how could it have been improved? Like would Isabella Rossellini have made a better Josie, as she was originally meant to fill that role?  I've been part of a writers/actors workshop for over a decade. Each week we bring in scripts, read them & give constructive criticism.   That's a huge difference between the juvenile "oh, I HATE James!!!" sort of thread & one that elaborates in an intelligent, adult  fashion, & even exercises a bit of creativity.  As an actor/writer/director, I understand the challenges creating the more outre parts of T.P. , & perhaps a bit more forgiving of the risk taking & relative failures.   Don't like something? WHAT would've been a worthy alternative? HMMMMM?!?!

It means that the show has blown its creative load but it's still thrusting away hoping that no one will notice until the recuperation period is over.

I hope no one notices the sexual connotations in that sentence.

Just watched ep 16 again; it's not quite as bad as I remembered. In fact the first third is fairly solid, I forgot about Catherine's scene in the episode, and the excellent scene where Donna visits Leland. However the whole magic scene, and all that ensues is still pretty awful and insulting...

In comparison episode 17 looks much better; weirdly the only part of this I didn't like were Cooper's scenes... and that whole story about the tuna fish.

I love the tuna fish story! I love how Catherine is trying - badly - to look like some woman living in the woods. Just the right touch of dirt on her face like she can fool anyone with such silliness. There are several levels of mind games in that scene, even from Harry. Great stuff.

I see where you coming from, but that scene just doesn't do it for me. The whole thing just seems silly to me, and pretty pointless. Why on earth would Catherine come up with such a preposterous story? What does Harry make of it? Yes, I realize this is Twin Peaks we're talking about, but this just seems out of character. Another moment I didn't much care for that I forgot last time: the waaaay too long scene with Hank and Ernie. Reflecting it's not the Cooper scenes I disliked (I loved the first 20 minutes or so); it's the Roger Hardy scenes... that character and plotline were really boring and unnecessary in my opinion.

But, but... We need to keep Cooper in town! Just kidding. Yeah, Roger Hardy isn't my favourite character either. He's okay had he not seemed like such a desperate plot device. After all, the drug frame makes narrative sense, it's just when it happens after Cooper has said goodbye it starts to smack of desperation.

I like the fact that there's no way for Harry to tell if the story is true or not, or how much of it is. She does in fact lie about pretty much everything, even the fact that she's told Pete already. I do think it's unfortunate that the mill fire case is pretty much forgotten about, though. She would be a suspect of some sort, wouldn't she? You could rationalise it with the sheer amount of murder and mayhem they won't have time to investigate, but still... It seems kinda sloppy. But I love the way Piper Laurie plays it.

And I'll always defend that wig. I've posted the pic of my sister before... her hair looked just like that, and she doesn't wear a wig. The numbers in each image below correspond to the grade she was in. You can't tell me Sheryl Lee's hair looked that much different than some of those pics below.

I would be so pissed if my brother posted pics of my 80s hair online

We need that screencap again from the pink room scene where she's bending back and you can see where the 3/4 fall is pinned to her real hair.
