Earlier this year (8 April), I posted a thread about a dropped line of dialogue in the R1 Twin Peaks S2 DVD set (those interested can read it here).  Now that the Gold Edition is out, checking this scene over is one of the first things I did.

Here's the whole audio/visual context you can hear on the 2.0 track and the early old Worldvision VHS tapes:

Nadine gets hit with a sandbag and goes "UGH!"
DOC HAYWARD "Good Lord!  Come with me, Annie!"  ... "This way!"
Coop sees Windom Earle in his Log Lady get-up
COOPER (voice over) "Windom Earle!"
An explosive device goes off

Well, it seems that they did in fact edit that line (COOPER:  "Windom Earle!") back in, but it is almost inaudable on the 5.1 track.  You can hear it if you pump the volume, whereas it was just markedly absent in the S2 set.  In the 2.0 track, however, it is perfectly audible without straining to hear.  And that's not all...

On the 5.1 track, you can just barely hear Doc say "Good Lord," but nothing else he says is audible.
Coop, as I said above, can similarly barely be heard.

The subtitles omit both Doc's "come with me, Annie" and Cooper's "Windome Earle!", though all other dialogue is the same.  Strange, yes?

And regarding the TO BE CONTINUED text at the end of episode 7... that's still AWOL as well.

Neither of these things is any big deal, but it's just interesting how the remastering and rereleasing of the show on DVD is creating what are basically ever-so-slightly different versions of it.

...And now to lamely reply to my own topic...

Dugpa just posted an interview with Ryan Adams and David Grant, who worked on the remastering of video and audio on the new disc set.  Adams insists that all the components are preserved "as it was cut together and intended."  I wonder how he would explain the 2.0/5.1 sound differences then, or how the extra frames (like those in ep 14) came into being.

Regarding the absence of the TO BE CONTINUED title at the end of ep 7, Grant says "we created it as it aired," referring to the simple fade to black.

Both of these assertions are supposing that the negatives they worked with are records (1) of how the scenes were "intended" and (2) of how they "aired" originally.  It seems to me that neither of these assertions are necessarily true, given that those of us who saw the show in ye olde ABC times know that it was in fact different.  This is even more true given the number of differences noticed by international viewers of the series (I think it was Gordon, but don't quote me on that).

Maybe we just need to acknowledge that there are and were various factors that slightly alter the sound and video in a few of the episodes, even for American broadcast audiences, such that the negatives cannot reflect the alterations that appeared in the show "as aired."  Why then all this insistence that things are "as intended"?  ...As if intentionality can even be quantified?

It seems likely to me that the originals were done and then due to whatever reason either ABC or a TP video editor made some slight changes to the negative that was sent to ABC. So there could potentially be different versions of the series. For example, maybe those new seconds of scenes from 14 were due to either ABC feeling they were unnecessary and pulling those scenes themselves, but the original still remain intact. the original has been put in the vault (Lynch's or rights owners) for all these years. In either case, it seems likely that you have the original "intended" version and then you have a "copy" of this intended version sent over to ABC for broadcast that could've been changed slightly at the last second. This would probably be destroyed at some point but the original "intended" version would remain locked away safe and sound.

With regards to audio - i have no idea. :)

Yes, I pointed some small differences I noticed after I bought the season 2 DVDs, which IMO were the reason of brief cuts in the spanish broadcast of the show, cuts that are included in those DVDs but not in the old Manga Films ones... Ben's "I told you to stay home" to Sylvia in ep.29 or the complete lack of intro and titles in ep.6 come to mind...
