I read on the internet that there are problems with the sixth disc so I checked my own set and discs 4 and 6 are faulty. If I choose individual episodes it gives me the option of watching with or without the Log Lady introductions and then nothing. The only way I can watch the episodes is to select all. I've emailed Amazon to check if it's a bad batch, or if all the sets are faulty.

Did Paramount not bother to check the discs worked before releasing the set? There's been flurry of fan reviews since the Gold box was released and none of them picked up on what appears to be a common fault.

I'm not happy.

Ooh, suck. I need to check those discs when I get home. I haven't had time to watch any eps yet. :(

I just watched the pilot--going to go downstairs and skip to discs 4 and 6 right now.

***EDIT***

Yep--discs 4 and 6--as soon as you select an episode, and it goes to the screen to ask if you want to see the Log Lady intro, there are the options, but no way in which to select them.

Bummer.

It sounds like all the sets are faulty. My Doctor Who season one box set skipped a scene and the BBC sent me a replacement disc and told me to throw the other away but it was just one batch that was defective, apparently. There's no way on earth I'm sending my postcards back. The only way I'm parting with my Sheryl Lee cards is if they come to my house and take them from my cold dead hands. I don't much fancy returning the entire set to the US. Hopefully they'll do something similar to the BBC.

It's a bummer that there's a glitch--at least we still have all of the episodes.

I'm picking up season 3 of Doctor Who this afternoon--gonna check all the dvd's now...:)

Season three's on my Christmas list, along with the Keys To Time box set. My Gold box is going back if Amazon/Paramount can't replace the faulty discs.

On mine, I see the ice cream cone, and the options for the log lady intros, but there's no way to select them--there's just nothing there--a yes and a no but no little green peaks selector.  So you have to just go back and press PLAY ALL, and skip through episodes if you want to watch a certain one.  That's cool that you got yours to work--wonder why others are not...?

I haven't tried it on the computer--will try that later tonight to see if they work on there...

***EDIT***

It works in the computer--but that's odd, because the other DVD's are fine for selecting episodes on the TV/DVD player.  Ah well--I'm still chuffed as all get out with the set. :)

My discs 4 and 6 play just fine, both on the computer and the DVD player.  Disc 4 shows me the ice cream cone from the RR, and I can select Log Lady intros or not, and it works.  I think this is a mastering issue that only affects certain brands of DVD players.

Anybody get theirs to work like I did?

All three of our DVD players are Sony. I tried the discs in my non-Sony laptop and had the same problem so I excavated an old DVD player from the attic and tried them in that and the menus worked fine, which is strange because it's not even supposed to play R1 DVDs. My head hurts.

Mine is an old RCA player and they seem to be working fine.

I got past the menu problem, sat down to watch episode 8 and forty minutes in it jumped back to the beginning. I checked the disc and there's a huge circular scratch where the disc must have been spinning in transit. I'm sending it back to Amazon this afternoon.

The menus worked fine in one of the DVD drives I tried. I'm not sure if it's a bad batch or whether it's a common fault but there's posts on Dugpa, IMDB and Amazon about it so despite Pelley's good fortune people are having problems.

I doubt it has anything to do with specific brands but the menus worked fine in the cheapest of our two Sony DVD players but not in the other one, which cost quite a bit more.

My nerves are frayed.

My Disc 4 and 6 work fine.

Everyone who is having problems, are you checking to make sure there are no scratched on the disc? I noticed that every hub in the set has a little bubble in the plastic about an inch and a half above the hub. it's actually raised ever so slightly, and I'm wondering if it's scratching some people's DVDs.

On a side topic, my Pretty as a Picture DVD only plays in my standalone DVD player, not in my computer. When on my computer and I highlight and click play, it just pops me back to the menu that I was just on.

I've been wondering if scratches are responsible for the defective menus but it's always discs 4 and 6 that are affected. The scratch on disc 4 was about two thirds out from the centre and it was quite thick. I know somebody on another board mentioned missing scenes on one of their discs, which was most likely due to scratches.

I appreciate the heads up. I have only watched the first two discs and the bonus features disc...I will be sure to check my other discs later on. Thanks.

You're welcome. It seems very few people are having the same problem and I'm thinking of renaming the thread 'The Gold box isn't faulty!' Mine on the other hand was an ordeal and it's gone back to Amazon.

Good luck with your set!

Discs 8 and 9 will be fine. My replacement Gold box arrived this morning and the menus still don't work but at least the discs aren't scratched. Jared was right about the rough piece of plastic in the disc tray that scratches the discs.

I got two dud sets! I have 500+ DVDs and this is the first time I've ever had a problem with menus, so it's definately the discs. When the BBC issued defective Doctor Who discs they set up a helpline and sent out replacements but I don't think CBS has even acknowledged people are having problems. Wise move, really.

Amazon has been fantastic. I paid for posh shipping for the first set so the replacement arrived within two days! They sent the replacement a few hours after I initiated the returns procedure. I can't fault them at all.

I bought another Gold box via Ebay a couple of weeks ago and all the menu's work fine, unlike the three sets I tried from Amazon. It's definately a batch fault that only affects some of the Gold boxes. If you have a Gold box that doesn't work it's not your player, it's the DVD.

I was very depressed when I discovered mine is like that on disc 4 and 6 as well.

At least all of the episodes work, you just have to skip through the previous ones to watch the next one.

Although this seems extremely careless and lazy on whoever made the dvds part.

Mine are okay; they've only been played on a XBox 360.  Also, mine had no postcards, which might mean they're a later batch, which might make a difference.

I think it works on my regular DVD player, but the disc 4 and disc 6 menu error shows up in my Playstation 2.

I've noticed this error is mainly with the batch that came from Borders/Amazon.com.
