Thanks for the link to that great interview - I've never seen Frank Silva interviewed before - I've only seen him on Twin Peaks as BOB.

Beware of BOB

When I call out no one can hear me,when I whisper he thinks the message is for him only..my little voice inside my throat,I always think there must be something that I've done or something I can do...But no one no one comes to help,he says,a little girl like you...

QUOTE:You can't really "die of AIDS"; the disease weakens your immune system and allows other things to kill you.  So Frank Silva could easily have been an AIDS sufferer who happened to die of a heart attack.

I hate it when people say that. AS if we didn't know AIDS facilitates the death.

Who has time to stand around saying " he died from a heart attack brought about by complications from AIDS."

Please assume the summarised version is being spoken by someone who knows.

from what i remember, the anthrax of the early 90's was way into TP. i remember an interview with scott ian at the time where he says while they were on tour in europe, circa 1990-91, they'd have episodes taped and mailed to them so they didnt miss out on the show. also, as many probably know, on the album 'sound of white noise'(which 'only' is from) a song is called "black lodge," with contributions from none other but the maestro himself, angelo.

Frank is also in the video of "Only". Scott and the boys are huge Lynch Fans. I've had the opportunity to talk to the members of Anthrax and they are truly good people and great fans.

Blah blah blah... I'm sure there has been AIDS sufferers who've committed suicide, had fatal accidents, etc.    You don't have time for accuracy about how someone's life ended?   Take the time. Life is short, but not that short.

That's somewhat garbled. I mean, if I say " Frank died of AIDS." You  should assume I know that AIDS does not kill but allows other diseases, ailment to kill. Don't insult me and spoil the atmosphere by correcting me.

Imagine saying that at a funeral.

It makes you sound, forgive me, like a know it all.

When I say someone died from AIDS I know full well the science behind it.

Assume this from this point on.

Albie, I understand what you're saying, but ignorance about AIDS is pretty persistent in our society.  You'd be amazed at how many people still don't know basic facts, like that AIDS isn't spread through casual physical contact, that people can get AIDS from straight sex, etc.  I think it's good to spread knowledge about the disease even if it occasionally insults a knowledgeable person.

I've seen people say "you don't DIE of AIDS." in such an arrogant way. I'm sure you didn't mean to irritate me, as there's no way you could know it irrates me. Unless you've been following me and breaking into my flat and reading my irritation list.

This is almost impossible.

Yet.

I think OSF has a point, albie.  You sacrifice accuracy that may be important to the individual and his/her family if you just say that death was caused by AIDS.  To extend this a bit, it technically seems as though a fatal hate crime against  positive person could be said to have "caused" by the disease, yet you wouldn't say they died "of" it in the way you mean.

And I think albie has a point, too, OSF.  It's kind of like saying someone died of "old age" when that usually means heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc., well into life whereas younger people die of these afflictions every day and are given more specific obituaries.  Maybe it has to do with the levels of privacy people feel the dead are owed not to reveal the full extent of the cause of death.  Umbrella terms like these may be less accurate by design to respect privacy and the feelings of those involved.  I personally would rather err on the side of accuracy, but I can respect that others wouldn't.

Great video, I'd never seen that one before. Of note, I believe that the video aired after episode 23, which originally aired on February 16, 1991. The next episode wasn't on until March 28, 1991. The reporter mentions how the show comes back on in March. Incidentally, this is also the time frame when the Auntie Em/Twin Peaks is back on Thursday nights commercial aired. Twin Peaks moved from Saturday (that Feb 16 date) to Thursday nights. Sadly, it only aired on Thursdays for 3 more new episodes. The final two episodes aired on a Friday (ep 27), and then (after a 7+ week gap) a Monday (eps 28 and 29 together).

Anyway, I just thought I'd bring that up for historical purposes. :) I remember weathering that 7+ week gap. :)

Back on topic... he's dead... does it really matter what from? ;)

I just think saying " He died from pnuemonia because AIDS destroyed his immune system" is pointless.

I assume that when someone says "he died from AIDS." that the person is summarising. I don't assume they are ignorant and need rectifying. Someone dying is not, in my book, a good time to be making sure everyone has his facts right.

You wouldn't correct a widow or a relative at the graveside. Nor would you correct a member of a forum who is smart enough to like David Lynch. I would assume they were smart enough to know how AIDS works.

So by that logic, it should be equally as correct to just say "He died of pneumonia." Right?

Because it's someone dying... it's not a good time to be making sure everyone has his facts straight.

Correct? Not me. You have made a shitload of assumption here and given people the motivation to start their own irritation lists.

Just my tuppence, please resume your diatribe.

Yeah, it's not about being "smart enough" or not to know how AIDS works, its about being informed and perpetuating an informed view of the disease.  Lots of "smart" people may actually not know.  Intellect has nothing to do with it.

Semantics. Most people who know how AIDS works will use the shorthand "He died of AIDS."

Tell me, of all the famous people who died of AIDS. What was the actual illness that killed them?

Freddy Mercury for instance. Off the top of your head. What COMPLICATION actually killed him?

Don't know?

Nobody cares. He died of AIDS.

So you are saying you don't know that AIDS attacks the immune system enabling diseases to easily kill the host?

He's right though. The way I see it. It is better to assume that people are as in the know as yourself. It's just polite, and with the seemingly increasing number of violent looking mad folk in the world; safer.

Exactly. It doesn't matter. Except it does matter that AIDS killed him. Brings the threat home.

Is that the duality of Albie? You have been pretty conflicted throughout this thread.

Just an observation.
