Okay, so basically it turned out that we all liked and enjoyed David Lynch's new work INLAND EMPIRE pretty much. Generally speaking, I'm with you guys. But there must be also someone who found things at certain points in the movie that didn't quite work for them! So, what was it? Speak your thoughts freely. This space is now open for bashing at little (or not so little, if that's what you think) imperfections we found in this infernal labyrinth that IE is.

I liked that one actually. One thing I didn't quite like was the final shot of Laura Dern when she gets sort of enlightened. As a matter of fact, it's not that I didn't like it... but it was awfully shot in my opinion. There is something else, but right now it doesn't come to mind.

I thought the Rabbits excerpts fit in the movie very well, except for that scene when Naomi Watts enters the room holding candles high in the air and there's that black kind of bowling ball in flames at the right top corner of the screen.

Don't worry, S J Morgan. I haven't seen it either. But one day, I do hope to see it. Then again, if I never do see it, what will it matter? Especially 200 years from now, when I am dead...

There were three scenes that I didn't like, but aside from that I loved it. The scenes I didn't like were the barbecue scene, the scene where Nikki's husband goes to that guy at the shed asking about some unknonw man who had left recently, and the scene where the Polish mobsters brought the Phantom in, and told him about the crying girl... especially that last scene. They just dragged on and stopped the movie's momentum. It just seemed like people sitting around saying things that didn't make sense.... these scenes weren't interesting or meaningful to me and seemed to have very little to do with anythhing else.... also that bowling ball thing in that one Raabbits scene bugged me... what the hell?

Overall, I loved the film and I have been thinking about what scenes could have been cut out...the "bowling ball" scene from Rabbits kind of threw me for a loop and I can't remember at the moment if I had found any deeper significance...the scene where Lost Girl's husband goes to the shed, yeah, we could lose that...and doesn't that come before what he have been calling the seance scene, which I think is important (LWAPOM mentioned it)only because we see Lost Girl being "contacted" or trying to contact her husband (that's her husband that meets with the mobsters not The Phantom, because they are asking him to kill the Phantom). The only significance I can take from the "shed" scene is that the husband (and the mobsters) are looking for The Phantom but since he is in the "Inland Empire" then he is close to finding "the opening" he was looking for in the opening scenes and is closer to finding Lost Girl in Room 47.

You know,it's funny because in some ways I agree with your sentiment: Lynch movies are more about the overall mood and the emotions you take away from the movie etc. That's the line David usually espouses, BUT - I also think that he makes movies that DEMAND interpretation - he always imbues his stories with mysteries - and mysteries are there to be solved. If all he wanted to do was convey emotion, he could don it without all the mysteriousness - like, for example, Wong Kar-Wai does in his movies. I think DL puts the mysteriousness in because he wants to provoke people into discussion and debate.
My main complaint about IE? It's too short.
Has he taken his eyes off it yet?

It certainly is difficult to not try to interpret his films too much when you start watching them... however I've finally stopped becoming obsessed with details, etc. in his films. The only film of his where I've gotten anywhere by doing this is Mulholland Dr. By paying attention to my intuition during his movies I've come to understand a lot more...I really want to see it again but it's not playing anyewhere around here anymore...

He wants us to become more clever in order to join him in his Peace gardens projects and meditate with him - ahahahah ! Being serious now: I actually found that there was something of his obsession with war, violence, stupidness and pollution problems, so transcendental meditation as a solution for these issues in IE. I kind of found it in the dialogues about people inhaling factory smokes and the little girl seeing the end of the world. Very vague, though. Well, I suppose he tried to give a political nuance to those bits of the movie. That's quite a change!

I'm really sorry but I cannot think of even one scene of inland empire that I can honestly say that I like.

Saw IE for the first time last night. I didn't like the scene early in the movie where Grace's character walks up to Nikki's house. For the most part, the DV was a non-issue for me but here the camera was so shaky that it really bothered me. Even inside the house the camera was unsteady. I had no problem with the scene itself, just the camera work. Aside from that, I agree that the barbeque scene kind of stood out. Maybe it was just the connection to the the Room to Dream clip, but I didn't care for the look of it. I really enjoyed the film though and can't wait to see it again.

You are absolutely right mentioning this.Anyway I think its a very psycological work and a try to express "woman in trouble"world. All these outdoor problems like pollution, violence etc create even more everyday stress in everybody, sometimes not directly but finally a person who is in his own"trouble"which has nothing in common with pollution and wars in other countries is also affected by these "global problems"and it somehow makes her suffer more...what i mean is that from my point of view this dialogue is not just Davids obsession with this topic but a try to show that when a person has deep problems these "extra problems"are important too.It was just a thought which came on my mind while watching the movie...

In another thread Smokey said: | QUOTE:I'm still trying to get over the fact BOB1 didn't like Inland Empire |
aa.... ee....yyy... it was supposed to be a joke...
... when I said there was no single scene which I liked! Well, sure there was no scene I can honestly say that I liked because of course I have not seen a single shot of this film :-) I hoped such a radical statement (that not even one scene...) will make it clear that I'm not quite serious. I'm not too fond of Mulholland Drive but I'd be very far from saying there was no scene which I liked, actually there were many (I think I like Mulholland much more than you do, Booth, only so it happens that it's around the bottom of my list of Lynch films). So, cheer up, Smokey! ;-)

I think you're gonna like IE, BOb1. It is very different from Mulholland Dr.

Whew! That was a close one, BOB1!! It's funny though, because when it comes to tastes we either completely agree or completely disagree (I know that sound goofy but you know what I mean) and this has happened I would say 50/50. Anyway, I think you'll really enjoy Inland Empire. After seeing ut 3 times, I still can't say which one I like better it or Mulholland Drive, but it is a solid 3rd place overall if nothing else...it really is an amazing, beautiful, terrifying piece fo work with many scenes that rank among Lynch's best...

You like Mulholland Drive better...because its a better movie than IE. I used my Jedi powers there.

Saw it last Saturday and I loved every single shot of the movie. I think this is Lynch's best. The only thing I didn't like abut it was that song, "Polish Poem", played near the end. It sounds like a Lord of the Rings-Enya thing.

Hmm, I am in no way "anti" here but isn't it too fast to say whether it is his best? Anyway for me it would be too fast. Impressions are very fresh, the adrenaline level might not yet have fallen down... I think to truly be able to say such a thing one must give it some time, "digest it" properly... OR watch it a couple of times, perhaps? Being a Starwars fan, I remember that from the very first time I had an intuition that Revenge of the Sith might become my most favourite of all parts but I didn't dare say it until I watched it for the third time...

There won't be a theatrical release in my state, which makes me feel like I've been dared to not give it a chance. IE had better be pretty damned good for my having to wait this long and not even have a proper cinema experience for my first viewing. I'm bitter, bitter, bitter about it (and disappointed by the bulk of DL.com) Plus, I got a bad review of the film from a close, authoritative source. It's possible that I will no longer be as devout a Lynch fan if IE fails me :(
