I think you'll enjoy it, even if only for the opening scenes. They blew me away.

I love (nay, LOVE) Polish Poem. It reminds me of Falling, Questions In A World Of Blue, Mysteries Of Love and Song To The Siren.

The only thing "anti" I can think to say *shudders* is that if Lynch is distributing Inland Empire by himself does that mean once the DVD is released it will only be available on his website (like Eraserhead was originally). I certainly hope not, because there are fans out there who are not on the website and since I shelled out the cash to see IE 3 times then I should be able to buy it on DVD for a reasonable price...that is all for now.

There were actually quite a few things I had a problem with in this movie.
The overall reaction is that I thought it was good, but there were a number of scenes that I found myself fairly upset at their being in the movie

I adored the first hour of the movie. Seriously loved it, however after the first hour, I felt many of the scenes did not belong.
I have no serious issue with the extent to which the plot scrambles.
I liked most of the second and third hour.
But I really think a full 45 minutes of the movie could have easily been cut out and it wouldn't have lost anything important. If anything, it would have flowed a great deal better.

Some scenes that I think needed to be removed include:
-the BBQ scene with the spilled ketchup
-the scene with her walking over to her neighbor's backyard
-a few of the polish scenes (I liked most of them, but some of them needed to be scrapped)
-and most importantly, that f**king piece of shit scene with the asian lady and the other homeless people discussing how you can take a bus to Blah Blah Blah, and how this girl has a hole in vagina, and her sister keeps a monkey. ALL OF THAT NEEDED TO GO! In the worst way. I hated that with a passion. Its very existence makes me question if I really like David Lynch.

I loved the look of the film, and most of it works with me. But I am far from saying this film is without many flaws.

A couple of the scenes from the "blue tomorrow" movie^2 were just not interesting.

I didn't think rabbits worked at all in the movie. It stands on its own.

I really didn't like the scenes where laura dern was with that guy in the glasses and she did this long monologue in a southern accent. All that material was really weak, I think.

Laura Dern walking into the movie theater and seeing herself was great the first time I saw it in "in the mouth of madness", it was probably done before that too.

Overall, the movie lacked a "club silencio" or a "mystery man" scene that was just incredible. It never quite got to that level. The closest was when laura dern came upon herself in the studio, but that was a lost highway ripoff...

I really did like it overall, but I think he may have already peaked. I'm very disappointed that he'll never work with film again.

Hmm. I'm not looking forward to the theories; critical essays from Lacanian scholars, unified theories from fans, and what-not.  Believe me, I'm getting a degree in literary criticism so I know that everything can be analyzed, but sometimes it just makes the critic look like a fool.

 Totally agree!

Um...how, exactly? Would the fact that Dern played more than one character make it a Mulholland Drive ripoff too? That's some pretty skewed logic right there, in my opinion. As for the monologue, I personally thought that it had some of the best dialogue AND the best acting in the movie. If you want a "transcendent" moment, Nikki's death scene on Hollywood Boulevard is a pretty great example too, I'd say!

12R - I agree that people can get too attached to their Lynch theories, but it's kinda hard to not theorise at all! I mean, I think Lynch wants people to come up with their own interpretations to a certain extent - hence his comments on "the audience as Detective" and the recurrence of Detective figures in his movies....

I think the trick is to let a Lynch movie just wash over you the first couple of times you watch it, then think a little more about what it all means to you, while keeping your mind open to other ideas!

Has he taken his eyes off it yet?

This was one of the best scenes of the film, I think.

No. In both movies you have:

1. A scene early in the movie where a mysterious person appears where the main character is and we have no idea what they are doing.

2. Later in the movie we discover that the mysterious person was in fact the main character him/herself, and now we know how they ended up there and what was really going on.

That's more specifically similar than just having an actor play more than 1 character.

Of course. It's impossible to not try to make logical connections, and Lynch does invite/encourage that.
But I think it would be more than a little presumptuous to shoot for a single, certain interpretation of IE.  There is more to heaven, earth and David Lynch films than is dreamt of in our philosophy.
