Okay I am taking it upon myself to start the new Inland Empire thread...

Can I saw Laura Dern was amazing in this fiilm or has that been said already? I am going out to rent a cow this instant.

We stumbled out of the theater (and you could tell the audience were all hardcore Lynch fans) and I looked at my date and said "Now,, try to get your brain to stop." She was a real trooper and she loved it. So, did I even though I am still processing it. Luis had left text messages on my phone so I guess he wanted a full report, so I called him up (he also had some suggestions for where we could go for drinks near the theater) and I told him "It made no sense at all and it made perfect sense.", then we continued to discuss the film at great length. If there is a linear story in Inland Empire I don't if I can figure it out in a second viewing. It's Lynch and it's three hours long. Once the "story" is established it hits the ground running and doesn't let up It and goes to SO many places I don't think I could list them all here, but I will say stick around for the credits. That is all for now.

update: I forgot to mention what I thought about the whole digital video thing. It looks good, the colors are crisp and everything, but it felt like whole thing was shot with Stedicam...I kinda had a problem with it after an hour had gone by, but once it starts getting freaky, I did lose my initial apprehension. Yes, I am disappointed he is "done with film" but then again, he might finely hone his DV techniques and make it little better next time out.

second update: I forgot to mention how funny this movie is, it does have some terrific humor.

It IS funny, Smokey. There was no steadicam involved while I was working on it, but Dave did have a great flexible tubing dolly track. Instead of rails it had solid rubber tubes tghat you could make turns with and all kinds of cool stuff. He'd put the tripod on a gimballed dolly and make weird patterns in the track, then shoot it himself, running the camera and moving the dolly.

Thanks, John, that's really intereting. Because the way they describe the camera David used (in the media) that he was going all handheld during filming. Your last post gave me a clearer sense of what it might look like behind the scenes with David shooting with the dollies and such as you mentioned. The reason I said it looked like Steadicam, because it reminded me of shots in Mulhollland and Lost Highway when Peter Deming used Steadicam (especially brightly lit outdoors shots in the case of IE) and adding that to my previous understanding of how I had thought Inland Empire was shot led me to my previous and apparently incorrect conclusion. Once the movie really starts getting crazy, it looks pretty much like everything else David has done of late, there is a different look with the DV, but I still it still has a certain quality & beauty.

John, now that I think about it, I might as well ask you about the sound mix. Does the DV have a different sound mix, you know, something other than 5.1 because (can't remember if I've mentioned this or not) in the theater where I saw IE, all the sound was focused toward the front of the theater (I'm sitting closer next time that's for sure). The theater is an older theater (which I haven't been to in 3 years or more when I saw Blue Velvet there at a midnight showing)and I can't remember what it was like, but my friend Luis said, the sound mix was more centralized because of the camera David used. Is this true and what can you tell me about the sound mix? Thanks.

Also: Disregard the portion of my first post where I claim I can't figure out Inland Empire after a second viewing. It's a little overwhelming at first and it ceratinly sticks with you for days after. I have started a discussion thread after having a couple days to let it sink in, I have some ideas about the "story". I also have a feeling my friend Luis might not go on Tuesday, so I may have to fly solo if necessary, because I want to see it again. Once you finish watching it the first time, you think, wow, I don't think I could sit through that much abstract information again, but then you find yourself getting drawn back and wanting to revisit it again.

I love writing a big reply to a post only to hit "post message" and have it say "You must be logged in to post" when I was in fact logged in.  So, I will just say I saw IE, as well as DL, in Chicago and I loved it!

That French site is wonderful!  For other movies, too.

But I still don't think INLAND EMPIRE is coming to Omaha!!!

What's up with this cinema fetishism? I'll wait for the DVD, thank you.

Because films should ideally be see on a big screen. Much is lost on a TV.

I've watched the clips in the french website. From this vision, I get that INLAND EMPIRE is also a very funny movie!

Here is the latest italian trailer for the movie, I think it's the best I've seen.

(Its in the trailer section, choose your connection... with my computer it's skippy anyway ;))

Wednesday it is the release in Belgium, today I have bought my ticket. I'm looking forward to it after 5 year's that I've seen my first Lynch movie on the big screen. I'm planning of to ask a girlfriend to go with me, but she isn't that well known with Lynch, hopefully it'n not gonna be a big shock in a negative sense, but it will be shock for sure :-)

so, I'm confused

It showed in Austin on Jan. 24th. However it is not showing there at all now
Is it only getting shown once in the cities listed on websites? I find that far too rediculous to be true, however I am looking at one perfectly good example of this bullshit in action.

Do other cities actually have it playing on a semi-regular day-to-day basis?

That's a very good question, Special Agent. It certainly would be a shame if it only played once on the dates listed, and, may I say, completely ridiculous and, uh, stupid.

Just checked the schedule again. I think I have an answer for you. The austin screening was one of those special ones where  Lynch made an appearance. That might have to do with why its no longer there. THe dates on the website may be actual releaes?

In Chicago, it premiered on Friday, January 26th and is playing through February 8th. Still hoping to see it one last time on the final night.

I'm gonna watch it tomorrow. It's in one only theatre in Florence, Italy. That's a real pity!

I'm pretty excited, though... The main reason's because those clips I've seen in the french site were absolutely gorgeous!

I'm anxiously awaiting Erwin's and Mr. S's reactions. Now maybe I'll have some participation on the discussion thread, because they are two Gazetters who definitely like to discuss. I was thinking about Erwin last night when I was on the phone and checking the Gazette (got your PM too late, I was at work) and thought, "Oh man, he's watching it right now!"

The geographically closest showing is a two-hour drive. So, DVD it is.

Yeah, Erwin. my director friend Maureen and her boyfriend walked out when they saw it the night Lynch was in the theater so they weren't even there for the Q & A, the bastards. Too bad for them, because they missed the best parts of the movie. Glad you liked it, dude and that you opted for back to back showings.

Apparently you are not familiar with how noting statistical error works.

You must state your measurement, then state the range at which this value is statistically valid.

Ex: The concentration of Iron in this sample is 50 g/mL +/- 2

Are you trying to say that on the nights you went, there was roughly 5 & 9 people there?
If so, you would type ~5, or ~9.
If however you are actually speaking of variance, you have failed to include the base reading.

Sorry, these things are engrained in my memory after years of learning how to cite data

I saw it in Antwerp (Belgium), 3 hour one way train ride. Come on, Logichat, show some spirit!

I know, I know. If I knew a group of people who were interested in seeing it, I might make the trip, but not just me on my lonesome. But I consider myself lucky that I have my pick of three different cities to not go to. That's more than most can say.

Has anyone noticed how many "views" this thread has gotten, over 1,000. Who the hell? Guests? Must be, that is a lot of f-ing views and by extension the discussion thread and top 5 scene thread have well over 200 views. People looking for spoilers, I think so. Cheaters!!
