Hi all, Several of us are doing the meet and greet this Wednesday in Seattle with David. There are so many things i would love to ask him but probably wont have the time so I need to narrow it down. So what would you ask him? Rob

What process do you go thorugh to pick music for the soundtracks of your film? Are you a fan of Beck and Nina Simone (they're in IE) or did you hear them and instinctively use them? Bad phrasing, but you get the gist...
This would look good on your wall. -Noah-

What really went on between Marilyn Monroe and the Kennedys, and who really pulled the trigger on JFK? Not really! I'd ask him how he feels when he sees his own ideas watered-down, sanitized and used by mainstream Hollywood or in music videos and TV commercials? I'd also ask him to name 3 movies made in the last 10 years that he enjoyed.
Has he taken his eyes off it yet?

I doubt DL would need me to provide examples, I'm sure he is more than aware of how he has been copied.
Oh wait - YOU need examples? You're on a Twin Peaks fansite and you need examples of how Lynch has been ripped off? OK..... There is at least one thread in the TP forum about this, that would be a good place to start. But if you need some extra pointers, the urban decay of Eraserhead was copied in many music videos and TV commercials throughout the 80s and 90s, and its influence can still be seen today if you look for it. The influence of Twin Peaks can be seen (in varying amounts) in 90% of the decent TV drama that comes out of the USA. Here in the UK they tried to start a diabolical soap opera called Night and Day about 5 years ago. Its central premise was so similar to TP as to render it laughable. I believe there is a Wikipedia entry about it, if you're interested.

Oh yeah, Kramer and Urkel. Forgot about them. And would Lynch consider any of these his own ideas, after all this catching the big fish stuff?

Kramer and Urkel? How about "no"? He's gone on record more than once about the various "homages" to his work. He doesn't dwell on it, but he knows it's there. His ex-wife mentions it too, in Lynch on Lynch, I believe. Lynch himself touches upon it in that huge interview from Dutch TV someone posted recently. Happy hunting!

It's not like Lynch is above "homages" himself.
And I did post in one of those threads regarding "similarities"... most of the time it seems to be a case of apophenia. I mean really, red curtains must refer to TP? Most of these things are so tangential that I could just as easily say that Lynch "ripped" a large chunk for the Inland Empire plot from the movie Cut.

LOL - I don't recall anyone saying that Lynch doesn't do homages! If The Wizard of Oz didn't exist, I don't think Lynch would be making movies! I also noted a couple of very Lynch-esque moments in the Capra movie Forbidden. But I wasn't really talking about the red drapes etc. It's more to do with alienating cinematography/use of sound really. The warped camera angles in Eraserhead seem almost parodic now because they were ripped off so much by various "arthouse" directors in the late 80s. Even his animation on stuff like The Alphabet and The Grandmother has been heavily copied. Of course Lynch homages stuff - all artists do, but the general rule is: "Bad artists copy, good artists steal and improve" Then again, there are certain works which simply try to be as evocative of Lynch as they can. Ever seen Red Rock West?

| QUOTE: Ever seen Red Rock West? | Yes, but aside from having Nicolas Cage, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Dennis Hopper playing another psycho I didn't get any Lynch vibe at all.
The Hot Spot on the other hand plays like Hopper got a thing or two from Lynch on the Blue Velvet set. And not just Jack Nance.
And a couple of examples of these copies you speak of would help.

But....help who? This is a thread about what I'd ask Lynch. Like I say, he wouldn't need examples, since he's perfectly aware of them. I dunno how old you are, but if you watched any remotely "arty" commercials or music vids in the 80s or early 90s, you shouldn't really need examples either, since they were legion. And one last time: the majority of decent American TV drama made in the last 15 years, from The X-Files to Desperate Housewives, all owe a debt, no matter how small, to Twin Peaks. Surprised anybody on this site isn't already aware of this, unless you didn't watch TP on its initial airing, in which case you may have missed its huge impact on US television production. The animation in The Alphabet has been cited as an influence by a boatload of people, from artists at Sofia, the Bulgarian animation studio, through the Croatian Zagreb school, to the creatives of such ad agencies as London's VCCP and Saatchi & Saatchi, and they are just the ones I happen to know about...
As for RRW - well, as you say, the influence on casting was pretty obvious, or do you think it was just a coincidence? You think those people would still have been cast if WAH and Twin Peaks were not fresh in the memory of the producers/director? Look for characters eavesdropping through slatted doors a la Blue Velvet or TP. Once again, happy hunting!

I would also say hi, ask him for a hug and a picture, and when is INLAND EMPIRE either coming to DVD or out as a nationwide release, so I can see it?!

If he was outside I would ask him if he wanted a cigerette.....If he did I would proceed to peck his head with all the usual fan boy questions. In fantasy land I would ask him if he wanted to collaborate on some art with me.......We can all dream....
