Okay, Rob, Wednesday is over. It's almost 9:00 pm Pacific time - your time. Don't you think it's time to tell everyone what happened yesterday? Susan

Maybe he was just homaging it? Everybody does that, you know.......
I'd also like to ask Lynch if he agrees with Freud's ideas about the human personality - the id, ego, superego etc....
Has he taken his eyes off it yet?

Wednesday was a great day in Seattle, We finally got to meet and greet the Great David. David only spent about a minute with each person so you had enough time to get your four items autographed in gold ink and then you where on your way. I did ask David if he would come to the fest. His response was "One of these years". I told him what a wonderful time it was when Jennifer attended a couple of years back which he responded " She's a special lady". By that time he had signed my Mullholland Drive poster, his Twin Peaks Baseball card, and the covers for Mullholland Drive and FWWM so my time was up. I did tell him we where looking forward to tonight to see Inland Empire. He smiled and shook my hand. Overall, an outstanding moment to remember. I only wish he could have posed for pictures. Oh well, good times.. good times. Rob

"Why in the **** will you not allow continuations of Twin Peaks storylines in other mediums -i.e comics, books, graphic novels, etc.? You weren't the only one who created the show! Think about Mark Frost, Harley Peyton, and Bob Engels!"
"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this." -Dale Cooper

I forgot to point out that at the IE screening he attended, somebody actually did ask him this! He would only name one: The Man without a Past by Aki Kaurismaki

I would ask him if he ever reads the theories of the plots and metaphoric representation within his films and if he is ever amused by them.

I'd ask David if he's a Freemason (the other thread rekindled some old ponderings I've had for many years).

Well sure, but why would you imagine him to be a Freemason? I don't see any likelihood that he would be. Lack of time for one. Second, I don't think he'd be interested or fall for such nonsense/ male bonding business rituals. Any freemason readings you could get from Twin Peaks seems partial at best, then it would stem from the pen of other writers. Don't you think Lynch is interested in Transcendental Meditation to such an extent that the suggestion he would find freemasonry appealing seems absurd? Isn't freemasonry just a rather dated and daft boys' club? I can't see a hip and happening fellow like Lynch even giving a fig about such a thang, that's all!

Yeah, it's hard to imagine David Lynch being interested in a secret society centered around using metaphors drawn from esoteric geometry and architecture to quietly shape the direction of civilization's evolution. Especially if it involved old men in odd costumes.

Ha ha! Of course! I've read some negative write-ups on Trans meditation and its ability to produce trances or dissociative states which can lead to mental ill health and psychotic episodes, for instance. But like anything I think it can have bad and good effects. It would be interesting to know what Lynch thinks in that sense, ie. can TM have negative effects? In INLAND EMP he certainly seems to portray trances in a negative way. That would be interesting to ask him about.

You've made some good points, thank you! Especially in regards to Twin Peaks having multiple writers. I wonder, was the idea of the Bookhouse Boys a creation of Lynch or somebody else? I remember hearing Lynch do a radio interview on NPR (I think last Fall). During the interview, a caller asked Lynch why he seemed to have anti-christian themes to his films. This perplexed Lynch. Lynch and the radio host didn't quite understand why the caller thought that (couldn't get factual basis for that opinion of his), although it made me think of the stark contrast between the darkness of Lynch's works and the optimism and warm attitude Lynch seems to radiate when he talks about stuff he loves, like TM. After the caller hung up, Lynch made a point of saying that he had a fondness for the Gospels. Lynch saying that reminded me of the fact that he is proud to have been an Eagle Scout, which requires years of commitment, hard work, and a good attitude about life & people in general. The Boy Scouts do have lots of rituals as the boys advance in rank, but I can't make a detailed comparision between official Boy Scout rites and Masonic rites beyond saying they are intended to help guide members on a path of internal growth. While the Masonic religious requirements for membership aren't much more than believing in some form of Supreme Being and that humans can achieve some degrees of moral or metaphysical ideals, their rites involve heavy doses of "mystery"; meaning their rituals are meant to be secrets kept not only from the public, but also from lower degree Masons who have not reached sufficient degree to experience the rituals. Although the rituals of the Boy Scouts are not mystery-based like that, the Masons' air of mystery combined with religion and internal exploration make me think of Lynch somehow. No, I also doubt Lynch has much time for kooky costumes, unless he's having fun making them himself. Lynch needs a 25 hour clock so he can more of what he wants done. Regarding shaping the path of civilization's evolution, the David Lynch Foundation's goals DO fit that definition, but not in any malicious (i.e. conspiratorial) way. World peace would be a step up the evolutionary ladder. Enlightenment via esoteric geometrical concepts? If David Lynch ever had any interest in that, it's probably passed. Lynch seems to have the wisdom to not bother looking for deep enlightening meanings in things, which I suspect is an attitude higher degree Masons have, too. Any Mason may speculate on the symbols and purpose of Freemasonry, and indeed all masons are required to some extent to speculate on masonic meaning as a condition of advancing through the degrees. It is well noted, however, that no one person "speaks" for the whole of Freemasonry. In similar fashion, Lynch doesn't tell anybody what the "true" meanings behind the esoteric stuff in his works are really about, regardless of how much of that stuff is improvised by Lynch or not. Lynch leaves the interpretations up to his audience.
But I do think the idea that the Masons is just a way for old guys to hang out together in odd costumes is an oversimplification. At least they do charity work.
(DISCLAIMER: I'm neither a Mason, nor am I particularly religious. I was in the Boy Scouts for only six months as a kid, never getting past the rank of Tenderfoot. Sorry if this discussion is getting off-topic!)

I'm not a mason, but I have a friend who is. He's in his late 20s, works in media, and is very interested in independent film and music. I doubt Lynch is a mason (I think it's more likely that Mark Frost would be), but not because he's too cool or hip for it.
The question is, Where have you gone?

I'd ask him whether Diane Selwyn and Aunt Ruth are one and the same, and has she been Fire Walking since the 40s or 50s.
