I kinda feel bad for everyone involved.  Arizona obviously has a problem that the rest of the country mostly doesn't share.  They haven't got much federal help for it -- at least not as much as they feel they should -- so they took their own steps.  But they didn't bother to think very much about it first, and made a second mess for themselves before they even got close to dealing with the first mess.

The govt clearly recognize it's a mess with all the backpedaling and damage control they're going into now, and it's a shame that a lot of people are going to get hurt because of amateur hour in the legislature.  (But that's so often the case that it goes without saying.)

Obviously carding all the brown people isn't the answer, and I certainly don't think the renegade border militias are the answer, but I really can't think of a good, constructive idea of what would help without just "constructing" a wall.  And that would suck too much to consider.

Still wanna retire my asthmatic Canuck ass there, though.  (Marriage of convenience, anyone?)

I've never been that agitated about the immigration issue but I just want to mention to JVS that California is the state most impacted with an estimated 10% of our 30-something million population illegally residing in this state.  How this all shakes down in each public policy arena is almost impossible to discuss without the overblown rhetoric and skewed stats employed by zealots on both sides.  I wish I knew.  Mainly I have felt that immigration quotas should be increased for those coming from this continent.

I would like, as you say Susan, higher legal levels for western hemisphere immigration and the process reviewed, but we need control of people coming across that southern border. Why and why now? Because the millions of illegals are bankrupting states like California. The strain on healthcare and other expenses caused by the influx has passed the tipping point. Also, unlike even ten years ago, we don't know who or what besides garden variety illegals are capable of coming over the border. e.g. Jihadist chemical and biological weapons for starters.

I have Hispanic friends and they came here legally. We had a citizenship party for a great gentleman from Honduras last summer. They play by the rules. Our southern friends have to get in line. The border must be controlled. Bush and Obama have done nothing of any value to help the dire situation. nada. The U S is like a fully clothed guy with his pants lowered so his ass is exposed.

sounds like everyone here is exhausted over the issue. But I get the sense that the government is making a big mistake by always spinning things so far to the pc angle. it is just making a wide divide between the people who want something done-anything-any recognition/validation that there is a problem, and the people in charge who won't do anything or worse; blame/name call and accuse if you speak out on it. the unrest is spreading, heels are dug in. It's not pretty.

Oh come on now. This is the post racial era.

This topic has continued to fester with the L A board's call for a boycott on Arizonia. From a non political common sense business perspective that boycott was a stupid thing to do. L A cannot and will not fix the sidewalks and they start a trade war with Arizona ? And the chickens...come home to roost. I tell you, here i have been watching international trade to watch out for trade wars ( if they grow they are suicidal )and it never occurred to me that it would happen between states, cities right here at home. A new lowpoint in my many, make that many many years here.

Then there is the president and Attorney General Holder, who plays Stedman to Obama's Oprah. Niether one of these  provocateurs had even read the 10 page Arizona bill before their attack upon it. Admittedly!! Once again a wrong call without any knowledge of the situation as with that cop in New England last year.  ah boy.

"....hundreds of Somalis over the U.S. border who allegedly have ties to suspected terror cells is evidence of a porous and unsecured border being exploited by groups intent on wrecking deadly havoc on American soil."

Just a new article to back up what i said above 23 days ago #4. Open border folks and Sanctuary Cities might want to check it out. Sleep well.

And....

State's plea ignored by the administration for over a year.
