Preface...
"Formed after the closure of the BBCi site 'Get Writing' in 2005, Writers' Dock goes from strength to strength and has become the fastest growing, most vibrant site of its kind on the net! You would have to go far and wide to find a writers' site that even comes close! So why bother?" (S. M.)

April sees the launch of a national campaign
to encourage Library Membership in
England. We want to encourage as many
children and young people as possible to join
their local libraries and access the
wonderful wealth of ideas available for free.
The first 235,000 new young members and their
families will be given:
A free copy of the National Year of
Reading’s The Ultimate Book Guide: A
selection of some of our best children's and
teenage reads from picture books to
novels
A library welcome pack: Complete with
information on services and resources,
including the expert help and support of
library staff, provided within the modern
library service (see as above)
And, of course, a warm welcome from
library staff who will advise on the wide
range of reading opportunities available in
libraries today
To make it easier for everyone to join their
local libraries, the National Year of
Reading and the Society of Chief
Librarians have developed a simple membership
form for use in any library in the country -
you'll be able to download it later this
month.
Read Up, Fed Up
Read Up, Fed Up
aims to start a national conversation amongst
teenagers about what they love and hate to
read – this can be anything from books to
blogs! After targeted focus groups with 11-14
years olds, a list of top 20 favourite and
bottom 20 most hated reads has been generated
and we’re now at the stage of opening up the
debate to the nation with the support of John
Barnes and Piczo. The campaign aims to help
adults better understand what teenagers love
reading as well as what turns them off.
Also just to say that, for anyone who's
interested, there's a
website where you can find out about
reading activities going on around the
country, find the 'word of the week' and
subscribe to an email newsletter.
