all the transcripts i can find for the pilot and episode 2 say : "chants"
this has been debated since the beginning.
and both ways have some merit
yet i really believe it's "...one chants out between two worlds : FIRE WALK WITH ME!"

Just rewatched episode 13, and when Al Strobel delivers the line to Cooper, the close-up really lets you watch his mouth (I even played it in slo-mo) and it's definitely chant with a "t", but I heard/saw it in the singular, "one chant out..."  which I like even better. It fits so well with the ritualistic nature of the verse.

"I'm talking about seeing beyond fear, Roger.  About looking at the world with love."

With my Gold Edition, I remember seeing the subtitles for the line the first time, and it was 'chance', the next time I heard the line later in the series, it came up as 'chants' on the subtitles. Either works for me

"Ive got good news....that gum you like is going to come back in style!"

"I'm a WHOLE DAMN TOWN!"

If it's "chants," then what was chanted?

Chance just makes more sense.  You guys have written interviews where David says it's "chants?"

FIRE WALK WITH ME was chanted.

One chants out - chances are, you would get more than one chance to chant fire walk with me.

Nicely spotted.

For some reason I felt certain that it was: 'one chance out...' until the last time this questioned was asked in these forums. So many people are convinced that it is: 'one chants out...' and have sufficient evidence to back it up.

After much consideration, I think 'one chants out...' seems more appropriate.

Great topic by the way.

"Great. Maybe after the square dance we can all take a hay-ride."

Through the darkness of future past, the magican longs to see...one chants out between two worlds (2 worlds the earthly and etheric worlds) Fire walk with me.

Fire itself is considered magickal...as are certain chants and calls in 'magick'.

the chant (FWWM) is a call of sorts, an invoking...

"To "invoke" is to "call in", just as to "evoke" is to "call forth". This is the essential difference between the two branches of Magick. In invocation, the macrocosm floods the consciousness. In evocation, the magician, having become the macrocosm, creates a microcosm."  Crowley, Magick Book4

Crowley was very much an adept of Enochian magick and the sonics of the calling system.

The chant gives access for the demon/spirit on the earthly plane...hence when Laura says it with Harold FWWM...she is briefly overcome by the demon/spirit of Bob.
