I know there's been posts about favorite characters, but who would be your least favorite character? Personally mine would have to be Josie, everytime I saw her she disinterested me, I just didn't like the character and thought she was really annoying.

Me too! I never liked her. I also don't like Jack, he just seemed unnecessary to me. And of course characters like the Renault brothers, Window Earle, and BOB.

Evelyn, Little Nicky, Ernie Niles, Cousin Jonathan are the lesser characters that come to mind.

On a recent re-watch of both series of the major characters I found myself less tolerant of the Ed, Nadine, Norma triangle. Hank Jennings is largely irritating except for one or two scenes with the brothers Horne. James Hurley primarily because of the Evelyn/Donna scenes.

Jean Renault, who largely serves his purpose but some of his scenes drag on and his accent is ridiculous at times. Oh and Harold Smith, I don't mind the actor but this diversion gets harder to watch each time, it puts Donna (also because of her James scenes) in the dubious category.

And last, but not least, Annie Blackburn - when she appears you feel the shows imminent collapse is nigh!

Evelyn, her "brother", Dick and Lana..

Some of the stories should have been left out. But you can't love it all, can you.

Of course, the award for the most annoying character goes to: Evelyn Marsh!!!!!!. She´s also featured in the most boring subplot of TP you can imagine. As I watched the show the last time I could accept  the silliness in the EP 17-22 with all the goofy humour and awkward storylines but the Evelyn/James scenes are really just a waste of film material. James isn´t a compelling character and he can´t carry a whole story arc on himself. He works with Donna and Maddy but not alone. The whole tone of the James/Evelyn scenes is just sooo melodramatic and disjointed from Twin Peaks it´s damn boring.

Then we have Lana who wouldn´t be such a bad character herself but she takes screentime away for the more interesting storylines. She could have worked as a background character who shows up at town events and flirts with the men but no one can get her . That would make her more mysterious.

Another terrible one is Little Nicky although I must say the Dick/Andy/Nicky storyline isn´t so bad. The scene in the dinner is funny so is the changing of the tire. But if you really need these kind of comedy in TP... i don´t know. This story ends also in the most disappointing way anyone could imagine. Doc Hayward gives Dick and Andy a moral speech of what Nicky been through and they cry. And THEN they stop seeing the kid? That´s just bad writing and as I recall the boy is never mentioned again.

Josie isn´t in my top 3. She is a boring character but she works well with Ben, Pete, Hank, Catherine. The scenes with her and Harry are always the same but Harry is a cool guy so that´s Ok.

C'mon Josie is fine! And especially all the Packard sawmill subplot is very good and it's nothing without Josie. Yes, her scenes with Harry are kind of repeatable... but well, that's just average not bad.

As for the really poor things in Twin Peaks for me Little Nicky takes the honour absolutely. With Nicky and Evelyn I would say the exact oppostie to what someone posted above: the Little Nicky plot is a terrible waste of everything, not a single scene works here - well and Dr Hayward's final speech is probably the Worst Scene of Twin Peaks ever.

Evelyn's subplot is weak but not so bad. I could mention a few scenes I rather liked. The main problem is that this subplot is completely useless. I can watch it or even enjoy it - but what for? It doesn't make any sense whatsoever in the whole of the series.

Lana - yeah.. waste of time. But the Mayor is nice, I like him about just like Annie did ;-)

Yeah. I like the sawmill conspiracy-plot too. When I watched TP the last time I concentrated more on that. The thing with Josie is that we learn very late why she is such "weak" character. The scene where Harry and Coop talking to Catherine after she died was very insightful (EP 26). Catherine talks about how Josie had always hide her real personality and she had to act how everybody wanted her to act. There was also this scene where Josie told Harry her life story (EP 18). I mean she has my sympathies because Eckhart is an evil guy and I definetely cared more about her between EP 18 and 23 that in all the episode before. While I´m talking already about Eckhart...

I find him very pointless. He shows up, has ONE great scene with Andrew and Catherine and then dies offscreen. I don´t know what´s missing but it would´ve been great to see him doing more evil things. I mean when he showed up I expected that all hell breaks loose because he was someone you don´t mess with. I always thought this Josie/Andrew/Eckhart triangle should definetely have more drama in it. I had a lots of expectations because it was set up to be great but the guy is just two days in TP. But I guess it was more important to show for five episodes how to open a box.

The Evelyn subplot wasn't THAT bad.  It just wasn't good either.  And it was long.  And it was the first big subplot after Laura's killer was revealed, so most viewers (including me) were expecting it to actually mean something.  Instead it was just filler.  Lots of new characters spread over many episodes in a new town, but then Donna came to town, got James, left, and we all realized that we spent a lot of time watching not much of anything.  Geez, the police never even came to Twin Peaks to question James.

Now little Nicky, Civil War Ben, Andy's paternity test, and even, for the most part, Windom Earle...yeah, that's bad.

What are you saying?! The Ben Civil War is great In all its absurdity I find it really hilarious (perhaps because Richard Beymer gives such a superb performance) - it neither "family drama" like Little Nicky, nor "soap opera" like Evelyn, nor "sitcom" like Lana and the Mayor... in my opinion it is really original and I am always looking forward to those scenes.

Not to mention how unbelievably beautiful Audrey looks in those scenes!!!

And Jerry... what happened to the man is a tragedy... C'mon it rocks!

I like Civil War Ben too. It goes on for maybe one episode too long but Beymer is such a great actor that it´s a real pleasure. I adore the scene where he watches the old video with him and Jerry when they were kids. We´ve seen Ben as an scheming, corrupt bastard but in this scene he has my sympathy.

Has anyone else noticed that he seems to adore his mother when he watches the video but comes across as reserved when he sees his father? Maybe his father was the reason that he become such an egoistic, sheming person?

I completely agree with everything you said! I thought Civil War Ben was hilarious! Everytime those scenes would appear I thought it was great. I loved the civil war re-enactment scene aswell.

I don't think I have much of any least favorite characters, more like 'least favorite plotlines', where some characters became annoying. Like the whole Evelyn-, Eckhart-, and Jack Justice Wheeler-thing. Most of the original cast was fine I guess, but when they started to force smaller characters up to a bigger role, only to eradicate them a few episodes later, it became frustrating. Those characters had nothing to do with Twin Peaks.

The only thing from the original plot that I felt was boring was all the Donna/James-, Ed/Nadine-drama that never ended.

Nadine Hurley and Donna Hayward irritated me more than any of them. After her ... Josie Packard, Leo Johnson, Windom Earle, and The Renault Brothers.

I started out disliking Bobby Briggs and liking James Hurley, but later I liked Bobby better and thought that Hurley was a brooding James Dean wannabe. I didn't like most scenes with Hurley and Donna Hayward.

I really, strongly, and passionately hated Annie.

I felt like her character was stale, in the horrible Mary Sue sort of way, and I didn't think her acting was strong at all. I also detested the Annie/Cooper thing. I felt like there was zero chemistry, and it just seemed forced and weak.

I really feel like her character was the only one to make me openly swear at my television set. Granted, there were moments when Donna got under my skin. And James. And a bunch of minor characters from time to time. It was just...Annie was awful.

And for the record, I thought her speech at the Miss Twin Peaks pageant was weak - and she shouldn't have won.

I had nothing against her, like hating and stuff, she was rather meaningless to me... but I am with you on most of what you said - no chemistry, a weak speech, not much acting. Also, the concept of a nun who leaves the convent and enters "real life" could have been used MUCH better.

the older i get, the more i enjoy all the characters.

nadine and evelyn each used to bore me tears.

but now, i enjoy thinking of what they bring to the show.

they're written for a reason.

and although, theyre still not as interesting to me as the other plots,

at least they're makin me think.

i cannot stand Louie. hands down my least favorite character.

cheers, -ashley

I cast my vote for Evelyn Marsh--there just wasn't much there and the story dragged on far too long.  If James needed (for the sake of plot) to find himself and realize he loved Donna, there just had to be a better way to do it.

Someone else mentioned Ernie Niles, but I have to admit that he grew on my since he at least provided some comic relief (sweating profusely while Hawk tried to fix the wire to him, saying 'I hope not' when Norma asks if he caught anything while hunting.)

it just occurred to me;

Evelyn might have been a pretty cool character,

if her scenes had more tension and actress been more charismatic.

?

the only Evelyn moment I dig, is when she's drunk in the bar,

and instead of sitting down ladylike, she throws her leg around the stool, regardless of her dress.

(i credit diane keaton's directing for that little moment, but maybe it was scripted?)

it makes me laugh every time. boy can i relate.

cheers,

-ashley

I just hated the way Evelyn overdid her "femme fatale" vibe. It was just too much!

I never cared for Josie at all.  I usually end up fast-forwarding through all of her scenes with Harry!
