I know this isn't a totally new idea but I've been thinking about the ?nal episode again and especially the ambiguity of all the utterances inside the Lodge(s) and what they might suggest as to the total understanding of the series' ending (which includes the ?lm's ?nal scenes, of course.) In keeping with the recently-posted theory of the Giant as BOB´s counterpart in the White Lodge and the need for both him and LMFAP to ?nd a replacement ?gure for the feverish, worn out Gerard/Mike (who has the power to walk between two worlds and who once worked with BOB but is now aligned against him) it can be inferred that the Giant's presence in the ?Waiting Room' - before he leaves and it becomes purely the Black Lodge - is intended as a sort of “damage limitation” exercise. (It has been made clear that the Giant did not want Cooper to go to the Lodge in pursuit of Annie as it would put him in a weaker position.) Inside the Lodge's “waiting room” (which contains a waiter which contains the Giant) the Giant utters only one thing, but it is arguably the most important advice he will give Cooper: “one and the same.” It has been argued that he may mean himself and LMFAP (who are clearly in league at this point, as the cave picture had already suggested) or himself and ?Senor Droolcup' (who's just trying to wake Cooper up, bless him!) and he may mean both but what he may also be trying to do is explain to Cooper that he will still be one, even when he appears to be two, and, by extension, that he will have the ability to contain the instincts of his destructive half from inside the lodge where part of him is trapped. Double-pronged utterances from the - real-not-doppelganger - LMFAP bear this argument out. “When you see ?me' again, it won't be ?me.” Is he only referring to his own doppelganger in the lodge or to Cooper himself when he ?nishes his ordeal? “Some of your friends are here.” Yes, a number of individuals known to Cooper are present, but only part of that individual is represented. Even “Wow BOB Wow!” can be taken as awestruck or mocking...?yes, you can manipulate the properties of a cup of coffee from where you are hiding - that's, like, totally amazing!” The doppelgangers' utterances may be BOB's attempt at counter-espionage. Some are examples of Windom's trickery, when he is posing as others. Maddy's “Watch out for my cousin.” could be an attempt at discouraging Cooper's spiritual bonding with Laura (which can only be a positive thing for both) and also has a second, hidden, meaning - take care of my cousin - that perhaps Lodge-Cooper, the one we see in FWWM, is intelligent enough to interpret corrrectly. LMFAP's doppelganger can only splutter “Doppelganger!” and “Another friend!” at him in an attempt to confuse Cooper - who is he here and who are these semi-familiar people he is coming into contact with? Doppel-Leland says “I did not kill anyone!”, as if to encourage future Cooper to think that he just needs to yield to BOB'S murderous tendencies and then he won't need to feel reponsible for the heinous acts committed in his name. We don't know what will happen to CooperBOB after the series' end, but we can see that an enormous amount of effort appears to have gone into both possessing Cooper and into guiding and instructing Cooper to reach a state where he is able to repel, resist and curb BOB's destructive tendencies. Even the mirror-smashing can be interpreted either way - is Cooper showing he won't go down without a ?ght (and alerting others to his weakened state) or is BOB showing that he has already reduced Cooper to a self-destructive idiot? It is both a cliffhanger and not a cliffhanger, because we will never see the rest of the story, never know for sure. We can only decide for ourselves.
