I am a student at University and am studying cult texts as one of my modules, one of my assignments is to engage in communication with those who are fans of a cult text and frequent message boards such as this one. My earlier thread was an attempt to generate a reaction from you, to see how you would respond to an attack on the text that you admire so much, and to single out the reasons that may turn off those from the show and attract others (For example, the holes left in the narrative, the stylistic traits). Your reactions were not the immature and volatile ones I was hoping for (For my own amusement), however the other threads on this board have answered many questions. I am a fan of the show believe it or not and own the DVD box set, sorry for my earlier posts but they were neccesary for the assignment.

YOU CALLED IT COOPED! nice trick. luckily we're not a malicious bunch, and to be honest i got the feeling most people knew you werent just trolling but provoking for reasons unknown. i would like to point out one line of yours:
"From your discussions your enjoyment of the show is based soley on assumptions and your own imagination, therefore the content of the show becomes irrelevant."
is this still part of the troll trick, or was this a sincere appraisal? because if it was sincere, i would like to point out that most of us are not here to only discuss just our personal likes and dislikes, and what should have happened, and why i like the dwarf, or why dont i like the dwarf, or what shouldnt have happened etc. i really advise against using that reasoning in your assignment if indeed you stand by the statement. i dont mean to be harsh, but youre 440 degrees wrong if you think none of us can articulate it, even if you had been sincere in your question, i dont have the time to type out a dissertation for a complete stranger who might not even know what im talking about. and im sure that was the reason many others opted for brief replies. not because you were pretending to be a troll, but because this is a very dense and contradictory piece of work(the series and FWWM)(or cult text, whatever), and i cant just pick and choose certain situations or characters for my arguement or opinion.
just some friendly advice, but you might want think about a different line of attack unless your assignment was just to try to annoy people on message boards for cult texts. and i would have to give you a C-. kind of an asshole, but ignorable. good luck on your paper though! id like to hear how it turns out.

Interesting,I will admit, myprevious posts were dense and uneducated, deliberatly so. The post which you have taken such a dislike to was also deliberately brash. I was merely observing how you would react to an outsider coming in and attacking the show, so yes, my main concern was to annoy people on message boards. However, that was only part 1, now I am intrigued and would be very grateful if someone would care to explain how they went from being a casual observer (i.e. Me, who watches the show and enjoys it) to one who engages in discussions online and may even partake in conventions with complete strangers. Also, how might a show that leaves so many questions unanswered, arguably (I believe this) dips in quality towards its end and is so different from what is considered conventional entertainment garner your interest, just why does this appeal to you?

i took exception to that statement because its my only pet peeve about this message board. but yes, i can hardly blame you, it was part of your assignment. tell your professor i feel used. again, i havent the time at the moment to write out a full response. i' PM you anything i have to say.

question 1 - for me it was a natural process, I watched Peaks in early nineties nad spent (literally) a couple of years discussing it, and playing it, with friends. I got interested in the internet rather late but when I did, the first thing I looked for, was Lynch and Twin Peaks, and moreover I found that a message board is a perfect place for me as it lets me write long texts, people respond and I respond to their texts... I can take my time with answering... something like that. So I do not consider myself ever being a "casual observer", I came to the board as a hardcore fan already!question 2 - I am convinced that it was actually the fact that so many questions were left open, which made so many people think about it on and on. The last episode opened so many gates! (and FWWM even more). Without it, well, it was ONLY 29 episodes... it is a lot in a way (Starwars needed far less to keep people excited forever ;-)), but still not so much. No fresh material coming, story closed - what's there to keep discussing? But with story open and loads of interpretations possible, it has been going on for years now!
