I know this is a crazy question, but who attacked Dr. Jacoby at the end of Season One (when he was watching Maddy, dressed up like Laura by the gazebo)? I've watched the series and FWWM countless times, and I always thought (or assumed) that it was Leland. But today when I was watching that episode with my husband, who isn't as big a fan as me, he asked who attacked him. I started to say Leland, but is that a certainty? I thought it was Leland because when Maddy left the house to meet Donna and James, he was sitting in the living room, and watched her leave... she didn't notice him, and I assumed he followed her. But now I'm not sure.

Any ideas?

it's a valid question.  at the time, I thought it was another mystery for down the line, like the man behind the tree with Leo, Bobby and Mike -something they weren't sure of, but could use later down the line.

But in Feb 1991 the book Behind the Scenes came out.  In it, in the episode guide, the writer gives a production note that Mark Frost confirmed to him that it is Leland as BOB who attacked him.  (I would have thought it was Leland as Leland though -like when he smothers Jacque.)

Quite definitely it is suggested that it was Leland - not clear for the first time viewer, I'm sure, but if you look closer and consider Leland's face as he saw Maddy leaving the house, and later the camera shots showing that someone was watching the gazebo party and it was not Bobby cause he was watched himself... must have been Leland.

Still a valid question is WHY he attacked Jacoby and I should say this question is rather ignored in the later part of the series. 

Do you have any ideas about it? Perhaps Jacoby wasn't the real goal and in fact Leland (BOB?) was planning an attack at Maddy?...
