At the diner just after funeral was at all appropriate? She was basically making fun of Leland Palmer's mental breakdown to two patrons while others were around her, IDK I've always had a fondness for Shelly but that one scene kind of makes me think that it was uncalled for even if Leland was acting like a complete psycho. Thoughts?

I've always wondered about that scene. I guess it was meant to lighten the mood after the very emotional funeral and, even if I too felt it was inappropriate, I can understand how, from a different perspective, the scene could be funny. I don't think she was laughing at him, but at the situation. It was all very unusual. Johnny shouts 'Amen!', Bobby bursts out with his speech, then he almost gets into a fight with James, everyone tries to separate them and, in the middle of all the commotion, the grieving father throws himself on the coffin. I don't know, I guess I can see an absurd humor there.

I love that scene.  It's a quick moment, but perfect.

people are catty, and no one is perfect.  people make fun of others without really thinking.  it seemed like normal behavior and rounded out her character.  Also, you have to remember you're probably thinking about it in context as a whole series where Shelly is basically a "good guy."  But when it aired it was when everyone was a suspect in a murder mystery... so when we were all speculating, "Is it Leo?" "No, it's James... he killed Laura!"  Someone could also chime in with, "Hey, don't forget Shelly. Remember that scene in the diner where she makes fun of Leland."

Oh, and she's also sharing the info and joke with the truck drivers.  Basically, the social equiv to her -commenting on the midclass problems, not their own.

It's funny, even though her actions seem a bit heartless.  You have to wonder how Shelley feels about Bobby's relationship with Laura.  And does she know about Leo's involvement with Laura?  Maybe she has good reason for her post-funeral humour...

ye I kinda agree with Lucy.  From what Laura said in her diary, she and Shelley weren't exactly that close.  She refers to her as "the wife. Quite pretty", which sounds a bit bitchy on Laura's part to me.  I also get the feeling that Laura knew about Bobby and Shelley, in the same way as Shelley knew about Leo and Laura.  Neither of the women were really "that" bothered enough to argue or fight about it because neither of them loved their official partners anyway.  then again I thnk it was Leland she was laughing at.  Also bear in mind she was only  A teenager!  C'mon if you were 18 and a man just jumped on his daughters coffin wailing while it was moving you wouldn't find the slightest bit humour in the situation?  I think most of us would, even if we wouldn't admit it.  I would.  I'll bet even Laura was looking down like "OMG dad! stop embarrassing me!"

Yeah, I always chalked that one up to the fact that Shelley wasn't really a big Laura fan. I can't say that I would be either, given the situation - Laura was seeing Bobby, who Shelley was genuinely falling for, and Bobby wasn't making any moves toward breaking up with her before she died... and Laura was screwing Leo, Shelley's husband. Even if she and Leo didn't have an ideal relationship, it would be a blow to know your husband was screwing someone else - especially the seemingly perfect mid-class homecoming queen! And I do think Shelley suspected that Leo was cheating with her on a regular basis. Shelley probably saw Laura as her competition. She didn't know all of the other stuff about Laura that led her to do the things she did, so there probably wasn't much sympathy.

And I do think that if I were a bystander at a funeral where everything went crazy - fighting, yelling, and a father jumping on top of the casket - I would at the very least comment on it afterward to other people... don't know if I'd do a reenactment like Shelley did (can' remember - was it a napkin dispense she used, or a hot-dog??) - that was a little much :) - but I would talk about it. Most people would, I'd think.

This reminded me of the scene in FWWM at the Double R when Norma asks Shelly to help Laura with the Meals on Wheels and Shelly seemed reluctant, I think she said she was too busy and then Norma persuades her to go.

Also, in the scene where you see Laura and Shelly together delivering the meals right before Laura goes over to Mrs. Tremond, they seemed deliberately distant, like they didn't want to talk to each other or interact.

I definitely think Shelly suspected Laura was involved in some way with Leo, and there was Bobby, who Shelly probably thought still loved Laura (assuming Bobby and Shelly had already started seeing each other at this time.)

I had the same thought. The two of them seemed very uncomfortable in eachothers presence.

I also agree that for a teenager the whole circus of the funeral had to be quite funny. It must have been difficult for everyone to know whether they should laugh or cry.

That scene where Leland goes berserk at Laura's funeral - when that was first shown on TV, My friend's wife said - "He killed her" - she just thought it was way too over the top, even being that he was her father. Very smart lady - she was right !!!

At this years's TP Fest I won 1st place in their caption contest. The photo is a very somber scene of funeral mourners, and Cooper says:" I know he's the grieving father, but Leland's been on the casket ride three times. He really should give someone else a chance."  Tragedy + time=...

And I freakin LOVED your caption! It was my favorite! Had such a good time this year...

When I watched that scene, it reminded me of how my friends and I felt on 9/11... how the whole world was in shock and we made jokes all day just to keep from screaming at how awful and completely unreal everything felt. Part of me still feels wrong about doing that, but it was a defense mechanism and we needed it. Not that the death of a fictional tv character is comparable to the deaths of who knows how many people, but it reminded me of that and actually kinda endeared Shelly to me. She is one of the "good guys" as PP said, and she got a pretty raw deal for the rest of the series.

Er, would you like some lemonade? I also have some saltines and some apple butter. Or would you like to wash your hands?
