Hi all,

It's great to see so much activity here lately and I hope it will continue like that.

A few days ago, I watched Stanley Kubrick's The Shining which I'm sure most of you have seen. I know it's one of David Lynch's favorite movies and I also know that he often makes references to such movies in his own art.

I think there could be links between The Shining and Twin Peaks. Recall that at some point in the movie, the boy says and writes the word "redrum", which is very similar to "red room". The idea of speaking backwards is also used in Twin Peaks (although in a different way). The mother reads "redrum" in reverse in the mirror as "murder". Both murder and mirrors are central in Twin Peaks.

Maybe we could start a thread on such links, not just to The Shining but also to other movies. I know Hitchcock's Vertigo is another example that has been debated here.

Interesting! Then maybe my theory isn't that bad after all :-) Is it possible to see the pic online somewhere?

Doubtful. It was my bottle & I snapped him doing this, at my request, at a TP Fest. Don't think anyone else took a pic.

I watched Eraserhead not long ago and I noticed a link to Twin Peaks so I thought I would add it to this thread. It's quite obvious so I'm sure many of you have noticed it: in one scene (the crazy dinner scene) there's a man telling about his arm going completely numb. I wonder what it means. In TP, it makes sense because of the Mike/dwarf split but maybe there's another meaning too? A meaning that refers back to Eraserhead?

I need to watch the film another time since I'm still mostly lost.  I would be very interested in your theories on this link.

By the way, in Copenhagen, where I come from, there's a cafe opening called The Log Lady Cafe. It's decorated in Twin Peaks style and you can get pies of the same type as in the show. And coffee obviously. Pretty cool I thought. I haven't been there yet since I'm currently living abroad but I plan to visit it when I move back home.

Nice idea with such a cafe in Copenhagen! I would love to come back to this city once, I spend some time living there when I was a child, and have never been back since. So when I finally get there, I might try and find the Log Lady Cafe, too!

As for Eraserhead, another link with Peaks that I have noticed was the floor... where was it though? Outside the elevator in Henry's place perhaps? A floor like in the Black Lodge.

As for the Shining I won't say anything because I deeply dislike this film.

Yes, you are quite right about the floor, another interesting link.

Here is a little info about the Log Lady Cafe in Copenhagen, including the address:

Let me know if/when you plan to go there and we could meet :-) I will be back in Denmark from early August.

I find it hard to believe there's any connection between The Shining and Twin Peaks. For one, Twin Peaks had a story, whereas Kubrick gutted King's novel. But don't get me started on Kubrick. He was a fine cinematographer, but I find his abilities as a director to be highly, highly overrated.

yes,

I`m with the old man on that one...

the Shining was and is one of my favourite films still..

I don`t really watch films fully and thoroughly because I have an attention span of about 2 minutes...but the atmosphere and that of the film...it`s spot on,isn`t it...

not my favourite, but one of them...

i never liked erasurehead very much though...

it was like watching a childbirth or something...

well,i found it a bit revolting frankly....

Thank you so much for the info. I am from Norway and have family in Copenhagen.

I will visit The Log Lady next time I'm there. For sure!

In season 1 episode 3, when Ben and Jerry are talking about checking out a new girl at the perfume counter, Jerry says: All work and no play make Ben and Jerry dull boys.  I know that "all work and no play make Jack a dull boy" is an old saying.  But I can't think of it being used in other films.

There's plenty of common ground between Twin Peaks & Kubrick's The Shining.

Doppelgangers/twinning first and foremost and mirrors, as already mentioned.

The American Indian aspect....a large part of The Shining's subtext and of course the mysticism through Hawk in Twin Peaks.

Redrum (rum can sound like room, as in rumour).....Red Room.

The Overlook & The Great Northern....both occupied by different souls every night, within reason.  The decor at times is strikingly similar...the Navajo prints/designs etc.

Laura's Diary....The Overlook's scrapbook.
