I'm familiar with the story of David Lynch casting Frank Silva after seeing him working on the set during filming of the pilot and how Lynch caught site of him in a mirror while filming the pilotet, but whenever I've read about this, the writer always says that the character of Bob was created specifically for Frank. This doesn't really ring true for me, given that and that the story in the pilot already has the letters under the finger nails of Bob's victims which together will spell out his name (in full as Robert). I know Lynch used to get ideas while they were filming and find ways to incorporate them into the story, but surely the stuff with the letters under the nails would have been written and rehearsed before filming started, so the character must have already been in Lynch's mind. Anyone able to clarify this? Thanks.

as far as we can tell, the story of Frank being caught in the shot, leading to Bob is correct...the letter under the nail was part of the Pilots 'make it up as we go'   to try and add more mystery. Loads of hints at things, mysteries that may never be solve to draw ya in. for instance, im sure they didnt know when filming the necklance being found in the woods that it would have been Jacobi who found it....it should have been Bob anyway, but what do i know

I always had the impression that Lynch and Frost had a basic story but made a lot of it up as they went (Mädchen Amick didnt even have a role until they wrote one for her-where would Bobby been without his Shelly?) and yet when listening to David Frost in the making of Seasons I and II on the Gold Edition DVDs it sounded to me like they (Frost and Lynch) knew there would be a BOB type character going in.

I wondered too whether they knew his name or they just went with the first initial must be "B" since that is what they found.

With regards to Cooped's comment about Jacoby finding the necklace it reminds me of the statements by Frost that they had three options for the killer Dr. Jacoby, Ben Horn and Leland Palmer. They even filmed all three killing off poor Madeleine. Yet Ray Wise (LP) stated that on the day he was told that Leland was the killer he said David Lynch said to him (Something to the effect) "It was Leland, it was always Leland" indicating that Frost and Lynch knew this from the beginning.

Interesting Lynch said in an interview in the April 2010 issue of UNCUT when asked about Laura Palmer's killer he responded "'I don't want to talk about that,' he says icily. 'It could have been anybody.  I never really went there mentally.'" (???)

 Fascinating.
