Did Hank fool Jean Renault the whole time about being the district attorney? I get the impression that Jean thinks that Hank is the district attorney when he gets caught by Jean outside of one eyed – jack……Didn’t Jean find out? I guess that Hank would have some benefits of maintaining the lie of being a lawyer……
i dont believe i've handed my gun over to anybody in my ENTIRE LIFE!!.......you wanna know something else i've never done?........I've never crossed the ocean.....Never got to China!

No. It was just a cliffhanger to add suspense. And then dropped, or not really crucial. Hank explained it when introducing Ernie to Jean. most likely the writing team forgot about it and realized nothing dramatic could be mined from it.

I think what is implied is that Jean would had killed Hank without hesitation if he hadn't seen Lodwyck's badge... A guy snooping around at the same time Audrey is rescued, he could be a deputy or (as is the case) working for Ben... When Jean sees the badge he's intrigued and that saves Hank and he even gets a job... I doubt Jean thought Hank was a D.A. Ms. Renault raised no dummies... Well, yeah, maybe two of them...

Yeah, but i guess that Jean would check if he could use this lawman in any way before he decided to kill him.......thats a good reason for not killing him straight away.....so i dont see this as a inconsistency in the Jean - character......Anyways, i dont think i am wrong in labeling Renault as a psychopath, and this type of personality disorder maybe includes inconsistent behaviour....or in any case unpredictable daredevil behaviour......
I had to check the episode where Hank introduces Ernie to Jean.....As you say, Audrey Horne, they talk about this episode (or Hank mentions it)....And he say something like: I met Jean in the woods, he pointed a pistol against my head. Lucky for me i had my state prosecutor badge with me. never leave home without it! And i guess you cant say from this scene if Jean knows that hank is not state prosecutor, because nobody mentions this directly or explicitly.......But i agree, i think Jean knows that Hank is not state prosecutor....... Mom Renault must have been a hell of a woman. I think about her something like this( spending her time chasing three little hyperactive devil - children) :
i dont believe i've handed my gun over to anybody in my ENTIRE LIFE!!.......you wanna know something else i've never done?........I've never crossed the ocean.....Never got to China!

I think that Hank is quick thinking and uses every tool available. The guy is a common criminal. In Hank's mind, the only thing between being dead or alive is using every available tool. He had the badge, and I agree, it probably saved his life in that situation.

Doesn't Lodwyck need his badge to work in a case? I mean, it's implied he's not from Twin Peaks, so I guess he had to identify himself to Sternwood or whatever... They never showed him missing it... STERNWOOD: Who are you, lad? LODWYCK: I'm the prosecutor, here's my badg...er... STERNWOOD: What's the matter son? Filly trouble? You've got two options...
LODWYCK: I must have dropped my badge at the RR restroom your Honor... STERNWOOD: Yeah, I heard that one before...
