Twin Peaks References or TP-inspired movies, episodes, etc. |

I've been wanting to make a thread like this for a while but just have not gotten around to it for a while. I wanted to discuss TV shows or movies that either have twin peaks references in them or are in some way inspired by Twin Peaks or David Lynch. The most obvious parody is probably the Darkwing Duck episode: "Twin Beaks", in where Darkwing, Launchpad, Gosalyn, and Honker travel to Twin Beaks in search of Honker's missing parents. The whole plot is something like from invasion of the body snatchers yet set in a Pacific North-Western town like Twin Peaks Washington. Just list or discuss anything that comes to mind and feel free to voice your input on said episodes and how they relate to Twin Peaks or David Lynch, like "Eyes wide Shut" (I'm pretty sure I came across a thread linking EWS to TP...was it here?)
Twin Peaks-esque references in other TV Shows
Darkwing Duck "Twin Beaks" *The whole episode is basically a plot from Twin Peaks, Launchpad starts using this new-age form of psychic/investigation skills (kind of like Dale Cooper's unorthodox investigation skills). *The opening theme to Twin Peaks "Falling (Instrumental)" can be clearly heard when the group first enters Twin Beaks. *Trudi's Diner is a reference to the Double R diner from Twin Peaks *Honker's Aunt Trudi is a reference to Nadine Hurley (Nadine wore an eyepatch and worked as a waitress at the Double-R Diner) *DW & LP's discovery of the fake Bushroot corpse is a lot similar to how Pete Martell stumbles upon Laura Palmer's body by the Packard Saw Mill. Bushroot's body is even wrapped up in plastic and Launchpad cries: "It's Bushrootm, he's dead!" ala Pete Martell. Darkwing adds on by mentioning that Bushroot was "wrapped up in plastic." ("She's dead, wrapped in plastic!") *Launchpad carries around and communicates with a log much like Margaret Lanternman (Log Lady) from Twin Peaks. *Launchpad utters the phrase: "The Cows are not what they seem", a line that the Giant from Twin Peaks said to Cooper. The Simpsons In the Simpsons episode "Who shot Mr. Burns?" Chief Wiggum has a dream that he is in the Red Room (See above image) and the entire room is taken directly from Twin Peaks, down to the furniture, curtains, and the Black & White zigzag tile floor. In the dream, Lisa communicated to Wiggum in backwards talk and dances in a "hop-skotch" kind of way referencing the Man from another place, she also talks backwards like the MFAP. Lisa also makes an ace of spades apear on fire similar to the kind of tricks that Pierre Tremond performs.
In another episode of the Simpsons (the title escapes me at the moment), Homer is seen watching TV in the dark and it is Twin Peaks (or a TP-ish show) and the Giant is dancing with the white horse (that Laura's mother saw) underneath a street light (reference to the MFAP) and in a forested area (presumably Glastonberry Grove). Also the sax music that plays is very similar to "Dance of the dream man" from Twin Peaks.

there's surprisingly few explicit ones for such a popular show. also, in repsonse to yer earlier post about the videogame audrey horne...it sounds kinda like yer doing what i did when i first got into TP: Fell deeply in love with it, then started looking at all forms of media for any vague reference or not or influence, no matter how arbitrary. hehe the most explicit twin peaks homage i can think of is the Xbox360 game Deadly Premonition, formerly known as Rainy Woods...check out the trailers for when the game was Rainy Woods,; the develpment even had to be stalled due to the similarities being a bit too close. But it is a huge warm nod to the series, i think youll get a kick out of it!

So they ended up having to change the style because it was too Twin Peaks-ish? Well it's not like the whole game would have been the same plot of the show or the movie, I mean just look at the above blatant rip-offs EDIT: I suppose I am sort of doing that, but in my defense I have always found Sherlynn Fenn to be an incredibly beautiful and sultry woman Okay yeah I see what you mean now, a subtle reference would have been less of a "hey I am copying Twin Peaks!" That was kind of treading close to the edge, the FBI special agent would be pretty easy to pass off but the twin midgets convulsing in the lobby and the woods itself (did look kinda like Glastonbury Grove) kinda makes it look more like a blatant rip (even though it would still be interesting to play nonetheless ) Overall I got more of a Silent Hill vibe from that trailer, definitely going to have to check out Deadly Premonition now.

I sure the game Silent Hill 4 had a two visual references to Twin Peaks. In the nightmare version of the apartment building, theres a room red walls with black & white tiles like the waiting room in Twin Peaks and the final boss is rearched by entering a circlular hole in the ground fill with a strange black liquid like the pool of oil in Glastonberry Grove. Also there a character in the game that I read somewhere (I forgot where) that is based on BOB. Heres a pic I think they both kinda have the same hair.
How is that old man still working as a waiter?

You know, I think you're better off going in the opposite direction -watch all the things that Twin Peaks borrows and is inspired from. -Laura, Sunset Boulevard, Hitchcock, Preston Sturges, Rebel Without a Cause etc. You'll be vastly rewarded.

In an early episode of Northern Exposure when Joel's fiances visits town, there is a strange sort of Twin Peaks send up at the end, where the music gets very Peaks-y and the characters start acting bizarrely and eating coffee and donuts. It's kind of funny.

well, Northern Exposure as a whole was kind of a response to Twin Peaks. I can't remember if it came out mid season while Peaks was on or when Peaks finished. But it seemed at the time like Nice Twin Peaks. Even it's ads had Joel and Maggie -with Janine Turner sporting a beauty mark. I liked the show a bit and followed it for a few seasons. Does anyone remember Homefront? That aired on ABC the following season after Peaks was cancelled. It was about a small town after WWII. I thought that was very good. Big M (that's my short hand for you, new poster) - James as James Dean in Rebel is more like a mood and feel. All the high school kids kind of have the feel of those 1950s flicks- which is great. Audrey in the pilot is kind of a ringer for Natalie Wood in Rebel and then morphs into Elizabeth Taylor. Frost said he wanted her to look like a "1950's dream." Bobby and James have more of a Blackboard Jungle look and mood. Basically, Peaks is a salute and celebration of film and mixing genres into one bog blender. During the run, many specualated Laura was alive based on the plot of the famous mystery film Laura -in which Laura Hunt has been killed and the detective falls in love with her portrait only to find out half way through the film, the real Laura is alive. Madeliene Ferguson is a mix of the names from Vertigo- Scotty Ferguson is the detective and is in love with Madeliene. Madeliene was an imposter of a woman who was killed, and Scotty makes her over back into the woman who died. Gordon Cole is a random name from Sunset Blvd; Waldo and Dr. Lydecker are from the character Waldo Lydecker from Laura. Dale B. Cooper is taken from D.B. Cooper. There's tons.

I actually liked Northern Exposure...that is until the Capras arrived in town *shudders*
I must have missed the pilot or CI is not airing it on their Twin Peaks weekly line up :(

Northern Exposure was pretty good, especially the 'Adam' episodes. As with most long running shows it suffered from diminishing returns. They also directly homaged TP : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElgMzJ7Rto0

Thank you for posting this! I love spotting the Twin Peaks expies: a whimsical version of "Falling/Laura Palmer's theme", and they ask about and Joel starts snapping his fingers when the bells/chimes start ringing and plays "Audrey's theme/Dance of the Dream Man". I love it!

In FREDDY'S DEAD they refer to the town of HIS Elm Street as "twin peaks" in a sarcastic manner. A cool little homage. Also in WEIRD AL's Song, "I Can't Watch This", he says, "I can't stand, Twin Peaks....wish they LYNCH those donut eatin freaks!"
