my theory is that Dale Cooper is speaking through the log trying his hardest to influence events and trying to stop the murder of laura palmer. Twin Peaks is kind of in some kind of repeating loop and it's the only way Cooper can interact with the world since he is stuck in the lodge.

That's interesting but weird, wouldn't that technically be a paradox or whatever since Cooper is in the Red Room/Black Lodge at the same time he is in Twin Peaks? So maybe what you're saying is that Lodge Cooper is trying to communicate back to himself through the log? Interesting...
I don't really have a theory of my own but my log suspects that the Jumping Man could be either Cooper or Jeffries, or the Grandson Tremond could be Cooper.

Yup, I agree that there is a loop, especially reinforced by FWWM. Entry to the Lodges, where time does not apply, allows Cooper and Laura to attempt to save themselves by existing in echoes and dreams. Laura almost tried to 'possess' Donna through her glasses etc...I have a fairly solid theory but atm am too busy to put it down in writing.

Yeh true.
Also i think its all the coffee they drink. Normally Twin Peaks is really boring so everyone drinks like 50 cups of coffee a day which is why everyone is strange which makes it interesting. Thats what i think.
