Hmmm, perhaps M.T. Wentz/Norma's mother, the food critic in that pretty dire plotline that surprisingly came just before they revealed the killer.

I think he just means he's intoxicated. You know, if one goes or is gone, then they went. "Gone" is American slang for "wasted" or "shitfaced" on drugs and/or alcohol. If he's the Great Went, it means he's an expert. Or at least he's the biggest drunk in the bar. He is certainly the largest in size.
Walter O. says George Wendt from Cheers asked him the same question ;)
