Have anyone of you had the misfortune? Look out. It's coming your way! It is all the rage here in Los Angeles and now, our city in all its wisdom, wants to expand the program. In one video ticketing location I'm aware of, a random stop sign was installed at the same time as the camera. Not at an intersection. Not on a city street or in a neighborhood but in a park. No cross street. Cars and motorcycles are already traveling at a snail's pace -- 10 to 15 mph. Then there it is. The stop sign. If you're a regular, you don't expect it. That's the plan! if you're new to the area, you wouldn't expect it. So everyone gets the ticket! $125. per offense. And that's just one sinister plot safety plan. Another good idea in California is random speed strips on highways and by-ways with adjacent gotcha vid-cams. So, this LA Times article asks the question: Is it for safety or revenue. Duh...

They've raised the price of parking tickets. They've added fees for moving violations. They've jacked up the price of "fix-it" tickets.
Now officials might have found another way to generate revenues from naughty drivers. Los Angeles is considering a major expansion of its red-light traffic camera program, which officials report netted more than $6 million last year after expenses. The number of intersections covered by the cameras could eventually double in L.A. to 64, The Times' Rich Connell reported today. While adding more cameras could offer a welcome boost to city revenue in the midst of a fiscal crisis, officials say any expansion will be based on safety considerations. Complaints from some drivers have grown louder as red-light ticket fines have climbed sharply in recent years. They now total more than $500 in Los Angeles County when traffic school fees are included. But LAPD officials and some experts say photo enforcement reduces potentially serious red-light-running accidents, changes driver behavior for the better and frees up patrol officers for other tasks. What do you think? Should the red-light camera program expand? Share your thoughts below. -- Shelby Grad Photo credit: Marc Martin / Los Angeles Times

Wow, a hundred and twenty five dollar fine. I (the motorcycle cop claimed) got a yellow light to red change ticket and the fine was $365. I had a clean license. 3 times the LA ticket amount.... That sucks to have lost your pro LA opinion. Over what period of time has your opinion been in decline? 2 years, 10, 20 ? Main reason(s)? Are other folks you know feeling the same way ? I always liked the Randy Newman song ' I Love L A '

I can't get too bummed out as I don't drive that much boot I can see how others would. The imp in me imagines a clear plastic folder fixed over ones plate so a facsimile of the plate of some person in a place of authority, or for that matter anyone you don't like, could be briefly slipped in prior to doing something you know would draw a ticket. That would be wrong though, wrong and evil.

THAT IS TOTALLY WRONG. GOVERNMENT IS OUT OF CONTROL, THEY WON'T STOP SPENDING THEY WILL ONLY TAKE TAKE TAKE. I'M SORRY FOR BOTH OF YOU, CITIES/TOWNS NOW HAVE THE RIGHT HERE IN MASS. TO INSTALL THE CAMERA'S (FOR THE REVENUE) AND THE FEW TOWNS THAT DID IT ARE THE POOREST IN THE STATE, NOW ARE THEY GOING FOR REVENUE OR SAFETY? HARD TO SAY (WITHOUT A TOTAL DOUBT) BECAUSE THEY ARE ALSO THE UNSAFEST TOWNS AS WELL. TALK ABOUT BIG BROTHER.
Bleep you, & bleep the establishment, and bleep all of you who are trying to make me part of the unestablished establishment.

I always think of Larry David from Curb Your Enthusiasm when I hear stories of tickets via cameras.

I know that this will seem silly, but, if you don't wanna get penalized, don't break the law. The drivers we're turning out now are some of the worst in history. Insurance for teens is sky high because they have the highest incidents of collisions, tickets, etc. And every one of them seems to believe that having a cell phone in their hand makes them a better driver. Legally, a yellow light means caution: the light's about to turn red, NOT HURRY UP & RUSH THROUGH THIS FUCKER!!! Sorry for stating the obvious, but again, driving a car is a privilege, not a right. And now, back to the lawbreaking crybabies...

ok... I'm telling you Frank it was a gross unwarranted ticket that i received. The cop was going for my out of state plates and used me to hit his quota. His next stop? Duncan Doughnuts. The light was still yellow. The fact that this kind of vulture policing is alive and well makes me and I should hope you cringe. Here I was on a nice ride to Fairfax (my old home town) sunny 72 degrees f., the delicious breakfast I had that morning, in fact my whole nice law abiding morning was jackbooted to the ground and my whole morning was turned sour by this travesty of justice. and the real killer was when i found out how expensive the ticket was some time later edit: to correct spelling of unwarranted

First off, who's Frank? Secondly, maybe there's a local Duncan Donuts, but the chain is Dunkin' (as in putting it in your coffee) Donuts. Third: this thread's about the system of traffic cameras, not cops. Fourth: sorry you got snagged by this unscrupulous officer. Since you were out of state, I assume you couldn't contest this. Most people likely have a jerk cop story. Too bad yours was so expensive. The moral: don't run yellow lights, especially when traveling...

Sorry on the Frank thing , i was thinking of that other fellow we have here. Thanks for your response [ serious part].... I'm going to try and put what happened to me over two years ago in the rear window and get on with my life. Don't turn me in for widening the topic. I was just trying to contrast cops v. not cops.

Yeah we shouldnt speed but how much is too much?? Here in the UK, we have had this shit going on with speed cameras for a few years now. £ times I have been caught by fixed cameras, £60 each time and 3 penalty points on my licence.....B******s I was Caught doing 70 in a 60 on tyhe main road up the centre of Scotland, on a dual Carriageway also...hmmmmm, the others were also at the upper end of the scale One of our problems here is the amount of speed limits ranging from 5mph up to 70 mph and everything in between......Grrrrrr
