I just watched the Pilot again, and I was shocked to see how ridiculous Julee Cruise looks!!  Is it just me or does she look like a hot tranny mess gone terribly wrong?  The eyelashes, the nails, the studded leather jacket and hat... and to top it off, she's lip syncing, so she REALLY looks like a drag queen.

Do we think she styled herself, or was this a look that was forced on her?  Because to be honest, her appearance reinforces my belief that her scene is actually taking place at a bar in a small town in rural Washington.

Now don't get me wrong, I love her voice.  She's a beautiful singer, and her music added so much to Twin Peaks.  So this is not a hate on Julee Cruise topic!  I just feel that her appearance in the Pilot deserves a thread.

Haha, I know what you mean. She didn't look great in that scene, but it didn't take away from the atmosphere. After all, as you said, she was in scene, rather than just providing a soundtrack.

Hehe.. I agree about the tranny look. Let's hope the style was forced on her.

Even though a musician who contributes with soundtracks should be allowed to keep the style he/she usually have.

I also agree that her voice is fantastic.

Man! Smell those trees. Smell those Douglas firs.

Of course she looked like a tranny...........she was in a gay-biker bar, wasnt she?

Overall, her look was much better in FWWM

Ben:  "We've laid in a gala reception for your fair-haired boys tonight.  All of Twin Peaks' best and brightest."

Jerry: "We're holding it in a phone booth?"

Would you happen to have a Facebook page? I'm struggling to get my claws into you without a photo. I've deployed the 'How dare you stereotype homosexuals, you bigoted little skank' argument many times already in topics as varied as 'Who out of the Twin Peaks cast has AIDs?' and 'Just You and I is a gay song only filthy gays could love' (or words to that effect). This time I'd like to go for something a bit more direct... lycra cycling shorts... stonewashed denim... one of those braces that clamps onto your entire head... the law of averages dictates you can't always have been a Gucci clad glamazon standing in judgement of others? There's delicious slander to be had here... I can practically smell it...

The Lady in the Radiator on stage in Eraserhead also had a very deliberately strange look.

Both Isabella in BV and Rebekah Del Rio in MD wore a ton of garish hooker makeup. You're on stage, it's theater. You're cheap and glittery and over-the-top. Probably drunk, definitely tragic.

The singer is supposed to stand out. The message is that the performer lives in a different world (ie Heaven, a dead girl's dreams, the underworld, the afterworld) than the audience, and is therefore privy to secrets they want you to listen to.

I always saw Julee as a Greek chorus: somewhat apart from, but commenting on the action. When I cast my Twin Peaks: Live  sequel for the stage, I'd made Julee an actual character with dialogue & was having trouble casting the role.  An androgynous actor who came in told me that his only experience was in doing drag lipsynch  shows, but that his specialty was Julee Cruise!! He got the part & was in all 3 episodes (I worked with him a number of times. He was Bugs to my Elmer in a synched What's Opera, Doc?)  His getting to see & meet Julee at the Fest was a dream come true for Gene. He doesn't do drag any more & runs a collectibles store in Tacoma. I sell some of his handmade stuff to Festers...

Julee darling, is that you?  Sorry, but I do not happen to have a Facebook page.  But you are welcome to conjure up any images of me that come to mind, and I must tell you, I'm feeling those lycra cycling shorts.  And seeing how I am actually one of the "filthy" ones, feel free to sink your claws into me, but watch out for the AIDS!  And BTW, I'm not standing in judgement of Mr/Ms. Cruise, but rather, kneeling in awe.  She is the most trannyliscious thing I've ever seen on the TV.

I really hope dear Julee doesn't look on here, because comparing her to the Lady in the Radiator is... well, it's shocking.  She doesn't look THAT bad!  I'm glad you brought up the other ladies in BV and MD, because I had never thought of that comparison.  I guess in Wild at Heart, Sailor was the "probaby drunk, definitely tragic" singer on stage... oh man, I love that movie.

Who says the Lady in the Radiator looks bad? David Lynch says in print that she's "beautiful," and Henry falls in love with her.

Just saying there is something deliberately off-kilter and heavy-handed in their appearances.

Good call on Sailor. LOL. He fits that bill. I put his new movie, Bad Elvis Impersonator: Port of Call New Orleans, on my Netflix Queue.
