I heard this movie was criticized at the cannes film festival? Were they hoping it was going to be a sequal or something else? I've heard some people say too much time had passed between the tv show and the movie. I've also heard some people said 1 reason they were dissapointed in it was little or nothing was revealed about what happened to dale after the series finale.

Yes, the film was booed at Cannes.  FWWM is not a film for everyone, not even for every Peaks Freak.  And I think it takes a lot to try to understand all of it, particularly the first 30 minutes or so.

At it's core, FWWM is just a story about terrible domestic abuse, physical, sexual and emotional.  I don't think there's another film in existence that portrays domestic abuse and its awful effects so bravely or so frighteningly.  It's a shame that more people can't recognize that... but maybe someday.

Apparently, Cannes critics said the feature didn't make sense.

How many of those judges do you think actually knew the mythology from the TV show enough to say whether or not it made sense?

Ever walk through a museum and see the art pieces from a different culture or point in human history? As abstractions they can be visually appealing, but they take context and a bit of background knowledge to become truly beautiful.

Isn't the first 30 minutes there aren't characters in it from the series to me the first 30 minutes or so seem kind of slow but that's just my opinion.

Well, like I said. I'm sure the presence or absence of the show characters, or advancing of the plot from the show finale mean little to critics judging the movie as a stand-along feature.

Repeating myself from another thread. That FWWM was a powerful summer matinee afternoon delight. Again just the theatre screen/audio set up  was TP gone hyperbolic.

the first half hour was cool to me and to be 'surrounded' IN the Pink Room. a vicarious thrill. A memorable film experience, and a 'powerful ' movie.

Booth doesn't like FWWM. he is a big TP first season booster. And with good reason -in that best ever on TV sweetspot.

I can imagine. You finally get to go out and be debauched with Laura. But if you don't love Laura already, I could also imagine that scene in particular meaning nothing.

For instance, when I was 17 I showed the movie to two arty older guys; one was a college radio guy, one a goth musician. They were yawning throughout and saying, "Who cares about this slut? She's hot, but this movie is lame."

Yes, I had had that whole TP TV seasons as a background. On Youtube -the Pink room with Jacque talking to Laura and Ronette is presented as a worst scene ever candidate. Well, that sense of humor we had seen in the series helped 'explain' that zanny dialogue.

FWWM booed at Cannes. I would have stood and clapped.

Revisited FWWM recently - and it's a great companion piece to the series.  If you know what to look for and pay attention - it helps answer a lot of questions.

I've always thought that FWWM was panned because people didn't really remember the series (and how violent and dark it really was).  They "remembered" the show was kind of "quirky" but not the real story

It always comes down to expectations. There are those that wanted to see something and didn't get what they want or those who didn't quite understand links between the show or plot lines. When people's expectations are not met, they act out to show their emotions instead of deeply reflecting or trying to understand the artist's message.

Compare FWWM to most of the high school movies made from the last 30 years. How many high school movies deal with incest, drug abuse, prostitution, and murder?

People make mistakes too. So all those that booed at Cannes are forgiven for their "momentary lapse of reason."

FWWM is even less of a high school movie than the superior River's Edge.
And listing those "heavy" themes in this context just makes them sound like they are scout badges.

incest... hmm interesting
drug use... eh
prostitution... oh yeah
slavery... uh huh
the holocaust.... OH MY GOD HOW MANY OSCARS DO YOU WANT?!?

I can understand why some people may have been disappointed with FWWM if they were expecting a sequal and got a prequal instead. However, I remain a fan of the movie b/c I simply love all things Twin Peaks. I've watched it many times and one thing I love about it is I always pick up on something different every time I watch it - I understand it much more than I did the first few times I viewed it, but I still feel like I gain a better comprehension of it with each viewing. My husband, who has just recently started watching TP with me, said that he didn't particularly like the movie b/c it had such heavy and depressing content, but he did enjoy it b/c it helped him understand the background of Laura Palmer (who we don't see a whole lot of in the series other than through flashbacks and photos) a little better.
