So I just finished the entire series and the film for the first time and found it absolutely indescribable and mesmerising. The only complaint I had about the series as a whole was the continuity, especially referring to the Bobby/Laura, storyline from FWWM to the Twin Peaks pilot. I understand that due to the film being solely focused on the last week of Laura Palmer's life there wasn't much room to explore the individual strands of each relationship in her life, but I was disappointed with the comparison from movie to the show. As seen throughout the movie, Bobby is portrayed as being hopelessly in love with Laura (which is exampled perfectly when he kisses her picture through the glass and their scene before he does his backward strut into the school). So, the night before she dies, he finds out she is using him for cocaine and is visibly upset by this. In the show's pilot he is shown as 'on top of the world' and shows absolutely no emotion for Laura's death...other than pointing out that he didn't kill her and that she loved him. I mean, I understand the concept of inner turmoil, but considering how he was portrayed throughout the film and how he reacted when he finally realised Laura didn't love him...I don't know, I just didn't feel it was continuous.
Also, at the same time that he is completely love with Laura, he is seeing Shelly on the side...which is never mentioned in the film. I would've believed that he started seeing Shelly AFTER realising Laura didn't love him...and I understand that on some level he would've known all along, but he was so possessive of Laura and it didn't make sense that he was dating her on the side.
I don't know, I might simply be stating facts, but I felt that the Bobby they portrayed in the film didn't match the Bobby shown in the pilot (except for the repeat of him walking backwards into rooms hehe). Otherwise, I must say, I absolutely LOVED the show and all the intricate relationships and characters! Absolute Brilliance!

my only ways that i can 'match up' this aspect of the film with the show are : a: Bobby is putting on a brave face early in the series. (he does break down, ep 5 i believe? in jacoby's?) b: He thought that he was in love with her, but only convinced himself of this due to her manipulative nature. Once she had died he became free of her 'control'

FIrst of all...congradulations on finishing the greatest TV show ever with one of the coolest movies of all time! As far as what you pointed out.. I don't find these things to be disconcerning, because they are very much on the surface. I mean...Bobby may have cared for Laura a great deal....but he was unable to love her. She was also a status symbol for him. High school Jock, dating the homecoming queen...ect..ect... As far as bad connections...there are tons of them. Laura gives her diary to Harold one week before she dies, when in the series we know she wrote in it the day of her death with a dream of the red room. James is soooo pissed at the end of FWWM, and in the show he is happy when we first see him, and in the mood for a "picnic". Laura never sees Jacoby, Josie, or any other side characters since their scenes were ommitted. Now...alot of these things can be explained away by the mythology of the series and the moods and spirit of human nature, but most of this is simply because the pilot was made in 1988, shown in 1989, the first season ran in 89 and 90, the second one in 90 and 91....then the movie didn't come out until the end of 92. With the complex movement of this show, it was hard to match the consistancy. Since you have seen the show AND the movie, you must now take the next step. COME TO THE FESTIVAL! 20th year anniversery! Get the next slice of Twin Peaks pie.

I almost look at FWWM as if it is a prequel to an alternate reality version of the Twin Peaks series. The tone and a lot of the characterizations (like the Bobby/Laura dynamic mentioned above) just don't fit that well together. Leland, Sarah and Gerard are other characters that just don't feel quite right if you're looking at the end of FWWM leading straight into the series.

I think it is supposed to feel that way, because it is about the dark elements ONLY. Lynch filmed alot of stuff...some of it the lighthearted style of the show...but he didn't include it in the final film. IF this material would have been present, the movie might have a different feel. What IS there...feels like the darker elements of a David Lynch directed episode...to me at least.

Has anyone seen the interview with the Lynchster about the release of the deleted scenes next year? I know we've been on tenderhooks for years (or at least some of us have), but this is surefire news if there has ever been any? http://www.amoeba.com/live-shows/videos/david-lynch.html
