youre missing my point. watching a film in a theater is a completely different way of seeing the same film on TV. however great your expiriences with TV, there is a different and older, almost ritual like thing about going out to the local(or not so local) theaters and the big screen. have you ever seen a lynch film in the theater? it is a completely different than at home on DVD. youre doing yourself a disservice by assuming that a film is a film regarless of what type of technology you use to watch it.

The sheer size of a "silver screen" can awe a person into feeling that even a mediocre movie is fantastic, while watching a movie on tv strips away such illusions. A great movie will remain a great movie regardless of where you watch it. The cinema is still the best place for it though, bigger is definitely better.

i made no qualitive statement about the content and mise en scène of a movie watched on the big screen being better than than watching the same movie on a television. i was merely making the point that the expirience of going to a theater has a certain magic that entails from the tradition that film(pre-video) and our relationship with it and the way we conduct ourselves about it has shaped the art form in just over the past a hundered years or so. this hasnt nothing to do about how good or bad ones opinion of a film is, which since it is almost completely subjective, i dont see how this has bearing on the topic.

sorry, i guess i wasnt being clear enough about content. my fault! besides, in my analogy, both plays are performed/watched live. a film, tho maybe edited for content and time for TV, plays the same as it could at any theartre or televisoion. the shakeaspeare analogy was meant to comment on theatre as a forever changing expirience VS. the blandness and samesness that is TV. not that i have any thing against a comedy of errors(it is after all the only play ive ever acted in, in fifth grade no less), but held up to king lear, it definitely can be slight, almost sitcomish.

The ritual is something I've never really gotten into. I agree that a crap film can seem good on the big screen (Spielberg's War of the Worlds), but I just find going to see an older film in the cinema to often be disappointing. I love seeing some new films in the cinema though, There Will Be Blood was a fantastic experience on the big screen.

I'd be there in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the fact I'm in the middle of my term (semester?) at University and it doesn't end for another 4 weeks. But keep me updated. I have Sh*tloads of work at the mo too and a project. :( I'll be there in spirit but I will try to get there. If only it was Newcastle (cries) x

Theaters in the US are now filled with people talking, texting, and walking around too much. Not to mention the film being misaligned, blurry, or just generally askew/distorted. I prefer to watch at home on Blu-ray. :)
