I just don't get it. How did Josie fit in the big picture of the Black Lodge storyline, and why would he trap her out of the blue?

Like The Coyote views the Roadrunner as chicken, BOB views Josie as a fear sandwich with a dab of mayo.
"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this." -Dale Cooper

Bob trapped Josie for the same reason that he killed Windom Earl in the Black Lodge in the final episode. You see, you don't mess with BOB's plans !!! Bob wanted to possess Cooper all along and when Josie shot him, BOB was furious !!! To prevent her from doing it again and possibly succeeding in killing him, BOB trapped her in the doorknob !!! - what a great sense of humor BOB has !!! When Windom Earl stabbed Cooper in the Lodge, BOB was so furious he took his soul right out of his head !!! BOB finally did succeed in possessing Coop but he first had to dispose of the two idiots who tried to kill poor Coop. He can't very well possess a corpse. Well maybe he can but he needed Cooper alive. Don't mess up BOB's plans !!!

These last two explanations make sense. So I understand that him possessing Cooper was due to Cooper himself being a liability to Bob's possession business by being able to solve the mystery?

Did Bob trap Josie? Or was Josie in the door knob meant to represent something else? The Josie in the doorknob thing always catches my attention, but I can't say I ever thought Bob was involved.

Bob tauntingly asked Cooper what happened to Josie, and he was even there, which confirms that Bob did have something to do with it.

Remember Margaret's husband is quite literally trapped in her log. She talks to it, just like Pete seems to talk to Josie in the woodwork of the Great Northern (and Ben sees her, too.)
Cooper is wrong a lot, but he did suspect BOB was attracted and fed on her fear, or that it let him in.
Wood might absorb a spirit that dies of a combination of fear and love, like a sponge. Josie died of fear (+ love of Harry), but Chief Seattle's speech says the dead who love the earth are in the woods. Mr. Lanterman died on his wedding night in a fire (fear + love, also.)
Did he trap her, or did the knob thing have little more to do with BOB other than that the fear created a temporary portal for him? It is debatable.

And according to a deleted scene in the script, Judy is Josie's sister and knew Philip Jeffries (or he knew of her.) She may have been a past victim of BOB's, or a future one.

She talks to her husband either in or through the log all throughout the series. For instance, when she gave Major Brigs the message that "the owls are not what they seem." Personally, I've always suspected the log of being a communication device. I believe that Margret Lanterman's husband is in one of the lodges... and was at the Lodge Meeting (Formica table garmonbozia) and (as I interpret most of Lynch's movies as existing in the same--or an overlapping--milieu, at the end of Inland Empire.

I believe if you search hard enough, you will find an interview with Lynch that states that he didn't want to outright kill Josie. He wanted there to be potential for her to come back.

I agree with the fear comment. BOB is attracted to fear, and josie died of fear. BOB couldn't help but get in on the action.

So I guess my personal theory about Josie's end involving a nob-job is not in these mythical theories the newbie-chastizer above mentioned. I read the scripts, read the transcripts, and have watched everything except Northwest Passage" and FWWM on the CBS.com website under video, classic, select Twin Peaks and have read Laura's Diary and Cooper's Audio-Transcripts and as many of the FAQ postings as I can find and I still have my questions remain unanswered.
Where is all of the snow? I have been in Washington State in June and had to put on chains. Why are they attending football practice in February when even the SuperBowl is over let alone High School play, What's with all the shoes? Why did Josie's dead body (wrapped in gorgeous) only weigh 65 pounds? Where is the discussion of the life of the poets cited in TP and especially about the "trout in the milk" quote Henry David Thoreau made in 1854 in reference to the 1849 dairyman's strike, during which there was a suspicion of the dairymen watering down their product.
Where all the good stuff at? I don't need to re-hash it with you, just to find it. Many of the links provided now return "page not found" Inquiring minds want to know! Well, "Douglas Ferns" and I do anyway.
