Where did Garland Briggs go during his disappearance from the campfire?  I'm not sure what the popular opinion is about this, but I believe he went to the Black Lodge.  I don't know what those caped figures were supposed to represent, but perhaps they were some folks from the Lodges, and that perhaps they came to retrieve Garland for his Lodge test, since he was close by, in the woods.  I think that Garland confronted his Doppelganger in the Black Lodge and his soul was so pure that he managed to escape the Black Lodge successfully.  And I think that the purity of his soul was best explained by the peaceful, happy dream he described to his son, Bobby.

When I first watched the show, I didn't really understand Garland Briggs' disappearance, it seemed so random and illogical to me.  But now, I think that the writers were intending to show the difference between what would happen to someone with a pure heart (Garland) and someone with unresolved issues (Cooper) if they were to enter the Black Lodge.

Was it ever explained on Twin Peaks how someone gains entrance to the White Lodge?  Or where it is?  I remember Hawk speaking about it briefly, but every time Garland tried to explain it, he was interrupted.  Because now, after watching everything, I think that in order to enter the White Lodge, one needed to face their Doppelganger in the Black Lodge first.

Thoughts?

I must admit I haven't watched it for a while so I could be wrong, but doesn't he say he went to the White Lodge? Hence the throne he's sitting on in the flashback-type-sequence? (Again, I could be wrong.)

I would argue against the total purity of Garland's soul. Despite the way his character turned out, he still popped his son early on for no real good reason; he appears to have anger and control issues under the surface.

QUOTE: he appears to have anger and control issues under the surface.

I've always viewed it just as a part of his no nonsense old school disciplinary style military background.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

"Garland?...odd name....Judy Garland?"

Ben:  "We've laid in a gala reception for your fair-haired boys tonight.  All of Twin Peaks' best and brightest."

Jerry: "We're holding it in a phone booth?"
