1. West

2. South

3. NE

4. MW

I've lived in 1,2,3, born in 2.  There are a lot of things I'm homesick for in the south but I still like living in CA.

The scenery in my corner of the MW is beautiful.  The weather in the MW is the worst.  Hot as balls in the summer, colder than a well digger's ass in the winter.

I like the southwest such as Arizona/New Mexico.

Northeast - born and raised. Plenty of country, city, and everything in between. Birthplace of American literature. (You guys forgot how disgustingly hot the summers are there.) And people say whatever's on their minds.

West - they say it's the best! There are a lot of useless states in the west, including this one, but the coast rules. Palm trees, old growth forests, a boat ride to Alaska. Temperate climate, better drivers (even if the traffic in LA is gloriously hellish.)

South - A different country/culture entirely. My visits have always brought interesting stories, and I do like the hospitality/family bonds there.

Midwest- only ever driven through, but Colorado is already too landlocked for me.

I wouldn't live in Kansas or Nebraska.  Iowa City is not bad.  It's an official city of literature.  Quite a few Pulitzer Prize winners ( I would say upwards of 50 ) have taught or attended the Iowa Writer's Workshop.  I was the first master's program for writing in the United States.

I have always longed to see more upstated New York, Boston, Vermont, etc.  I do imagine the northeast to be quite nice.

I LOVE southern food.

I haven't spent much time in the west.  Northern California is so beautiful as is the Pacific Northwest.  I was over the moon for the misty mountains, evergreens, huge ferns, waterfalls, windy mountain roads.  There is a great ambiance in the northwest.

It's hard to beat the sight and sounds of the sea pounding on the rocks, at the base of the cliff you're standing on, on the coast of Maine.  It always made me feel like the French Lieutenant's Woman. (I'm sure it must be similar on the Northwest coast...my only West Coast experience was L.A.) The mountains, lakes, streams, waterfalls in NY, Vermont, New Hampshire, hold a special place for me.

I also had powerful, natural experiences in Colorado and New Mexico (ahh, hot springs!)

And I live in the last part of the country I thought I'd ever live (north central Florida).  These things happen...but I have come to appreciate the rivers, crystal clear springs, oaks and spanish moss, and the lovely, low maintenance weather.

I haven't spent much time in the Midwest.

Vermont and the Catskills in the fall are insanely colorful. Italy Valley, the wine country in New York, is comparable to California's vineyard regions. I also find the the NE coast very gray and Victorian. I love all the old ocean towns. The architecture has got a few hundred years on the West. IMO, that gives it an edge on anywhere else.

Can't beat the lobster and clam chowder back east, either. Or the pizza. Or the Italian-American boys, mama mia! (Lucky to have found my nice Long Island boy here in Denver.)

Have you been to the Old West themed Dunton Hot Springs, Susan?

EDIT: make that next weekend. got all the way to the airport before I looked at the date on the itinerary. 2nd time I've done that!
