a.k.a. author of the book that was turned into the better of the two movies called Crash -- can I say that without having seen either? -- has died. Reports suggest cancer, which he'd been fighting with for a few years.
My impression is that his impact as a writer was strongest upon other artists... I liked some of his work when I encountered it years ago, and more recently I started reading Concrete Island (which I misplaced before finishing). The volume of RE/Search devoted to him is still interesting, and I've enjoyed the other interviews with him that I've read. (Still haven't read Atrocity Exhibition yet, though.)

I tried reading High Rise a while back, and I got about halfway through before I got bored with it. So he fell into the more interesting to read about* than to read itself pile. Though I have been thinking about giving the Atrocity Exhibition a chance.

Same for me, mostly -- I wonder if it's a hazard of heavily allegorical writing that it can be tough to maintain flow for any but the most highly motivated reader... It would explain why I don't have the same issue with his shorter pieces.

Crash was a fantastic book. To this day, I can't get in a car without thinking of it as some kind of complicated, dangerous sex toy.

Jamie, I not only think it's a fine idea to critique films you haven't seen, I've often thought I'd like to do just that sort of movie review blog. Maybe later come back with a second opinion when/if I saw the film. I hated the movie "Crash" (and I did see them both and hated them both while agreeing with Jamie on the better of the two). I can only see the dirty fingernails of Elias Koteas when I think back on it. Oh, and I guess there was that stupid body brace on Rosanna Arquette. Deranged movie but still better than the worst movie in recent years to win an Oscar for "Best Film." "Empire of the Sun" was a good movie though. RIP anyway, JG.

And I'm quite embarrassed that it's another film I've thus far failed to see. Perhaps this weekend...

Yes, but does it give him an erection to think about? :P

Ever notice the squish foley when Koteas' character, er, visit's Spader's through the back door?
As far as films interpretations of books go, it was a good one.
Ballard, you were a big old pervert. We'll miss you.
