The borderland of Inland Empire's narrative "frame" is the appearance of Axxon N., which appear in Chapters 16 and 31. Comparing signs in these scenes to parallel signs in Lost Highway and Mulholland Dr is a good place to start unpacking IE to rework the puzzle.

In Oz, as in LH and MD, the real world frames a dream, (or journey, as in the case of The Elephant Man and The Straight Story) on the way to death. The frames in Blue Velvet and Eraserhead are less distinct, but I think they can be located.

In fact, this formula works so well, you could stick anything in the frame and have it work, more or less, as a whole.

If you have specific complaints about IE, what would you keep or cut? What would you add? More Rabbits? More Things That Happened?

Where stars make dreams, and dreams make stars...

Chapter 15:

At the end of Ch 15, there's a slowed-down, strangely-lit profile shot of Nikki looking up. [[***Remember in LH when Fred looks up at the light during his headache, beginning his fugue-state existence as Pete that ends, presumably, as he's electrocuted*** ]]

Chapter 16

This profile shot precedes the Chapter 16 walk down the alley filming Blue Tomorrows, and into the door marked Axxon N. Nikki said she was nervous about this scene while having sex with Devon, and was already becoming confused over who she was.

When she walks into the shadows, there's a rushing wind sound. [[***Think of the sound in MD, when Betty disappears into the darkness inside the blue box.***]] Like Betty, Nikki is no longer herself.

In the same scene, as "Ghost of Love" plays, the girls tell her: "In the future/ you will be dreaming/ in a kind of sleep/ When you open your eyes/ someone familiar will be there." She puts her hands over her eyes.

** INSERT ANYTHING**

Chapter 30

In Chapter 30, on the same street Nikki dreamed herself, the camera moves into yet another dark doorway. On the other side are the old men having a séance of sorts: the Lost Girl is there, so is Piotrek, but he can only hear her. The Lost Girl had told the old men about who Piotrek "works for," (the Phantom) and he understands what to do with the pistol they give him.

Chapter 31

Chapter 31 starts when the Piotrek leaves the séance and the Lost Girl disappears. The men rearrange the chairs and take the same positions as the Rabbits. The old men’s red lamp is visible through the window behind the Rabbits' sofa. One of the men had said "It was red" out of context. Susie repeats "It was red."

As in Rabbits, it’s raining at Nikki’s fantasy self’s house before she’s released. We see her alone in the pink living room in her pink robe. We see her outside in a lawn chair wearing a gray shirt under a black sweater, then inside again with the girls.

The other side of the frame appears when the girls in the house send Nikki back into the real world. [[**Again, as in LH, this final wake-up is illustrated by a flashing white light.**]]

Another Nikki is walking down the other side of the street, and finds herself in front of another door marked Axxon N., on Hollywood Blvd.

She looks across the street and, true to the girls’ premonition, sees herself. (Doris Side pursues her with the screwdriver, and soon Kingsley is calling to “cut” the scene.)

Chapter 38

Nikki, who has just seen herself and the room with the gun on screen in the movie theater, imitates the action and follows the stairs up to another door that says Axxon N.

[[Is she still “dreaming?” I would say “no.”

She’s been called back through another one of the openings the Phantom refers to in the beginning of the film.

We safely assume she does this to pay the “old debt that needs paying” (shooting the Phantom). We can also safely assume it’s the other world since she uses the gun Piotrek acquired.]]

She shoots the Phantom outside door 47, and sees herself again; her face distorted is reflected back at her. She passes through, the rabbits disappear.

A white light…

She sees herself one more time, in the mansion. [[And you were there, Auntie Em. And you….]] All is restored.

Did you get the Lime Green Box Set? They're all on there. Like Robot Chicken, the skits aren't as potent when they're all lumped together.

Curiously, it's missing the Rebekah Del Rio solo bit. Make of that what you will.

great work angel!! i am in agreement with your conclusions. sadly, no one else here seems much interested in IE but you and i. ive been on the IE dugpa board for awhile, but it seems to be slowing to a stop. and the original IE message board wont accept new members, so i can only read the posts, some of which are good, some of which border on deconstrucionist rediculousness. oh well, maybe in a few years there will be more people picking up on what a great film it is.

Thanks, JFK. mr.silencio, ThisIstheGirl and faceintheleaves have posted some interesting things about IE, too.

In other discussions, I think people overanalyze the other Poland stuff, and the stuff at the house.

Mark Allyn Stewart in David Lynch Decoded suggests another frame:

The Lost Girl is imagining everything that happens to Nikki and sees it on the tv, as Diane imagines Betty.

There was a DVD of Rabbits available on ebay but just fan-made of course, some while back.

In contrast, Rabbits must be one of my least favourite Lynch things!

Nefud, your posts I can barely be bothered to read cos of that annoying moving image to the left.

Can you tell us a reason why, or are you just being grumpy pants today? ( I think tp3 needs his belly rubbed.)

Why did I not find Rabbits very entertaining or interesting? I got a copy of it off Ebay and found it to be okay the first time - just very drawn out with nothing happening. But then I am stating the obvious.

I liked the appearance of a 'scary monster' thing - which isn't seen in INLAND EMPIRE - and the general feel of it, but then Lynch has evoked such a mood before very much in Hotel Room and Eraserhead, really.

Come on, it was just dull and plain boring. But then maybe that was the intention.

As for Nefud's avatar, if I wanted to see a stupid Doctor Who bit of action I'd go to a Doctor Who message board. Also, it is downright distracting and detracts from their messages, I find.

Maybe I am a right grumpy sod eh!

Excuse but this doesn't warrant a thread.

It just struck me today how Inland Empire is the apex of the boom to bust in the real estate deal playing out the last 2 3 years. I E --A known area of importance and  different and distinct area  as is Hollywwood, and Twin Peeks.

Lynch (going by the title, only, i haven't seen the video) had his finger again on a place that includes darkness trouble of some type. He was hip to the Inland empire as noteworthy and strange ,

IE is a hodgepodge of various web projects, and not really a proper film. I had already seen Rabbits when I saw IE and it was lame to see it just thrown in there like it has any connection to the rest of it. Many of the better moments were MD retreads. It really just isn't worth the trouble to me.

Yep. The concept of linking these projects with transitions and the usual frame to make a puzzle of infinite solutions is becoming more tolerable to me now.

I like mrsilencio's House of Mirrors review:
