Mark Ryden.
These are some spooky pics. Remind me of Keane + Dali. Unsettling. Fun. And apparently this guy has been around for some time as I see he did the cover for Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" album way back when MJ was dangerous. Check it out and tell me he's been on your radar screen for years where have I been all my life. Susan PS Booth, have you seen this book The Upset ? I'm really loving the art within.

Not seen that particular book, but I've been a fan of the lowbrow movement for quite a few years now. Ryden also did the Desperation/The Regulators covers for Stephen King.

I like this one: http://www.markryden.com/paintings/index.html and this one: http://www.markryden.com/paintings/index.html
I have seen his work before but never knew who he was until now. Thanks for posting the info, Susan! Check out this guy, Michael Birawer: http://www.michaelbirawer.com/. I love his work!

Ryden's style is almost too consistent for me, but I can appreciate the Lewis Carroll-opium-trip aesthetic.
I opened this thread as I was browsing Morbid Anatomy. He happens to be included in their sidebar link list of Contemporary Artists.

Hell yeah, dude. And "Cue" just came up on my Dell DJ while I was revisiting some Joel Peter-Witkin.

I'm surprised Victoria Reynolds and her viscera paintings aren't featured on the site.

Smeds, that artist you linked reminds me of Hundertwasser. Here's one painting I found but I have an old poster of one of his street scene paintings that is more reminiscent.
| | |
| | | Austrian artist, Friedensrich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) paints eye-catching distortions and patterns in vibrant palettes based on Art Nouveau principles. Having lost 69 Jewish relatives during the Nazi rule, eventually he designed the Peace Flag for the Near East in 1978. Both Vienna and Syria decorated him with their Gold Medals of Honor. Often compared to Klimt and Schiele, the decorative and technical aspects of work flames controversy among critics yet he is exceedingly popular with people. |

| The fun thing about Hundertwasser is that he not only paints these squiggly buildings, he creates them too. He's not quite as interesting as Gaudí, but they're good additions to usually bland cityscapes.

Ooohhh, I like that one too! Thanks for posting it! I have four of Birawer's prints and I love them. Miss being in the Cities so I can see his new work out at the art gallery in the Mall of America... :(

Yeah I know an art gallery in a mall. I was skeptical but it had a lot of great work in there. I also miss the Uptown Art Fest...where he usually has a table... :(

I mentioned this guy in the books thread talking about true crime. Anyway, I think this "artist," known only as "Mr. Brown" would make a nice addition to some of the articles on Morbid Anatomy.

Yeah, I've been a Ryden fan for a few years. Was lucky enough to catch his exhibit at Seattle's Frye Museum in 2004. For a sweet profile on him & others of his ilk, check the doc The Treasures of Long Gone John, about the very unique art collector/ record company owner (Sympathy for the Record Industry)...

Wow, those are spooky. I like! Especially the series "Blood". I like the little girl with half a rabbit (OK, so I'm weird)...

I am really digging the Tree Show box set.

It's very retro, early Americana and reminds me a little of the Twin Peaks Access Guide, for some reason.
