Major Briggs delivers this printout of gibberish with the words Cooper in the middle of it and The Owls are not what  They Seem.  He says it came from the woods and not from above.  Does anyone have an explanation as to who specifically sent this message, why, and how they did it?  This detail was introduced (very X-Files) and then somewhat discarded.  How did the Lodge spirits communicate to make a readout print these words and why?  Was it just a simple case of the Giant or another White Lodge spirit addressing Cooper and telling him some of the people in town aren't really who you think they are (Leland)?  Do you think Mulder and Scully would have had more success and cracked this case if they were assigned to it?

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

It was actually the work of 2 monkeys randomly banging on a couple of typewriters (the other 98 were working on Shakespeare)...

Congrats on starting a thread that isn't gash! It's been a while, hehe

Well the way I always saw that was sort of 'radio waves' broadcasting from the Lodges/Woods, in a sort of non specific way...the satelites just so happened to 'tune' into something that was neither future nor past.

What i always wondered (and i guess it was just a bit of dialogue designed to be dramatic) when Col Riley says that Briggs' disappearing has 'implications that make the Cold War seem like a case of the sniffles'

ps   loaned my copy of season 2 to a friend 3 months ago...i am starting to withdraw...urgh IWANTITBACK

That line has always intrigued me.  I would love more specifics from Colonel Reilly on this.

The Lodge spirits must know the military are monitoring them if they sent this message to Coop so he could receive it.  It just seems a bizarre way to send it.  I don't know why the Giant didn't just pop up while Coop was eating pancakes at the Great Northern and told him this in an ambiguous way.

Well, if you remember, the Giant DID give Cooper this exact message. In fact, it was at the exact time that the weird signal was picked up by those radio telescopes. I don't think the Lodge spirits were deliberately using the telescopes to communicate with Cooper, I think the telescopes just sort of accidentally picked up whatever "vibes" were in the air as Cooper was visited by the Giant.

I'm so dumb I didn't realize the printout and the appearance of the Giant were "one and the same".  I learn something new every day.  *takes dumb pill*

It's a printout of the matrix.

The first Matrix movie was the only good one.

What other readings did the military get from the Lodge?

Briggs to Reilly "Oh nothing unusual tonight, they're just chatting about having leftovers for dinner, guess what it was - garmonbozia."

I completely agree with WilliamTheBloody... And about the implications of Briggs' disappearance that Col. Riley mentions, I don't think the reason is because Briggs himself is important, but because of the cause of his disappearance... They have been looking for the White Lodge for a long time and the message for Coop and Briggs abduction was their first contact. If you remember, when Briggs shows up they severely question him (perhaps even torture him) and he becomes suspicious of their methods and intentions.

Yes, but only if David Lynch directed it.

It didn't come from outer space.  It came from the woods, silly!  But in Season 3 the writers were going to explore the space aspect of Twin Peaks with the planet of corn.  *daydreams and flutters eyelids*

It came from Deep Space Nine.  Morn is a Lodge spirit.

He did tell him the message was from outer space, but later recanted by telling Coop it really came from the woods.

Actually, he never specifically says in ep.9 that message was from outer space; he says they have deep space monitors aimed at galaxies beyond our own and that they only got gibberish until they received that message, without saying from where it came...

I was all for the supernatural but when they hinted at outer space and aliens with this I gagged on a spoon.

Nefud's all time favorite movie - he has a weakness for CGI prairie dogs
